Why can't we have two sections one moderated and one non-moderated?
People who want to contribute to the moderated section would be asekd to respect a set of rules.
People who want to exercise their freedom of speech can say whatever they want in the non-moderated section.
Another solution is having one section, but asking every contributor to rate his/her own material (the same way tags such as ART and POLITICS are currently used). Then viewers can quickly skip materials which they may find offensive.

It's a moot point....
by Rosie T. (not verified) on Wed Oct 24, 2007 07:30 PM PDTHi, Sky, I guess you saw the featured article called "Attacks from Anonystan" posted on the same day as this blog. There was a pretty good discussion going on this topic. My central point in replying was that the question is one of moderated vs. unmoderated forum, rather than one of censorship. But the point is a couple of days later Khodemun posted a blog simply called "Questions." You may not have seen it due to the title but in it he interviewed JJ on this topic and if you go there you will find what I found, that this discussion is a moot one, because THERE IS NO ONE TO MODERATE ANY FORUM HERE! (Except the authors themselves and THAT would definitely be censorship!)
I don't agree with Uncle Irany and Haha on certain points. I believe some of the posts here are so over the top they can do damage to people. Not everyone has such a thick skin and that doesn't necessarily make them a coward-suppose I am a very shy young person for example, or my English isn't that good, or I am a devout Muslim seriously beginning to grapple with the indoctrination of my upbringing, and this is the first time I risk myself to write publicly. What if I become discouraged from ever writing again? It's not fair. Also I have seen a good discussion go flop when it was targetted for such spamming that it became impossible to ignore the sheer volume of the pornographic nonsense mails. Nonetheless our views on this are strictly academic at this point. JJ really believes that there is no difference between moderation to ensure a BARE MINIMUM of human decency and censorship, which I don't think anyone here really wants.
So the only solution is to ignore the offenders most of the time, and when confronting them, don't stoop to their level.
Cheers,
Rosie PS There is a new one now on the topic in Persian.
This forum is not tolerated by .....
by Uncle Irany (not verified) on Sat Oct 20, 2007 07:37 PM PDTThe format and form of this forum is just fine. Everyone is free to write, and if someone writes garbage then that someone has revealed his/her own character and personality, even if he/she doesn't use real names. This format is not tolerated by the "silver-spoon-in-the-mouth" crowd (read monarchists/Israeli agents/ members of the "$75M Club") who do not like to hear opposing views when they see an article in their favor but don't have the stomack to see some criticize it, or face the facts, or don't like the articles that they say is written by the IRI crowd and possibly critical of their positions. Either way, they should get out of the kitchen if they find it too hot.... This is free speech at its best.
Thank you JJ for providing this forum.

nothing is sacred
by Anonymous-haha (not verified) on Sat Oct 20, 2007 03:33 PM PDTdude,
nothing is sacred.
people here bashed islam, arabs and anything muslim.
people like me bashed the pahlavi worshipping traitors and anti-Islam secularists of Iran who should stay put in america/canada and never return to the holy land.
if you are too coward to face idiots who will say idiotic things, then you should not write in the first place.
go to this site: angryarab.blogspot.com
I love the site because the prof who runs the site has never censored anything and hence you got to hear craps from both sides.but in between them, we hear sane voices too.
pay more attention to the sane voices or learn to ignore the insane voices.
good luck.
