MP Daniel Kawczynski in call over Libya’s future (Tuesday1st November 2011)
A Shropshire MP today suggested the Libyan people be given a referendum on whether they would like the exiled prince of Libya restored to the throne to head a constitutional monarchy.
Muhammad al-Senussi has been living in London since his family was overthrown by Colonnel Gaddafi in 1969. Tory MP Daniel Kawczynski said he supported the National Transitional Council of Libya.
But, he was “concerned” Libyans had not been given the chance themselves to decide on what sort of constitution they wanted.
The NTC yesterday appointed Abdel-Rahim al-Keeb, an electronics engineer from Tripoli, as its new interim president, while the country seeks to re-wire itself for the post-Gaddafi era.
Mr Kawczynski argued the restoration of the monarchy in Libya offered “stability” – and the Crown Prince a “unifying figure, untainted by any previous association with the Gaddafi regime” who would “command respect” and could “bring the whole country together”.
The Shrewsbury & Atcham MP said he had contacted Prime Minister David Cameron to seek the Crown Prince’s guidance and views on Libya.
“After 42-years of absolutely tyrannical despotism I don’t think it is unreasonable to have a referendum,” said the Tory MP.
“I, for one, think another politician, another head of state that is a politician, is the last thing that the Libyan people want, and I think they need to be consulted in order for them to decide what sort of constitution they want.
“Yes this is a matter for the Libyan people, but ultimately, our country has put our service personnel at risk and I think we have a right to advise and caution the NTC in this regard,” he added.
Mr Kawczynski made the case while spearheading a debate at Westminster on the UK’s relationship with Libya. He also asked if the Government was happy for the killer of British police officer WPc Yvonne Fletcher to face trial in Libya.
Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne said the Government was committed to building a “revitalised” relationship with Libya which addressed “past wrongs”.

Mr Belhaj says he was tortured in jail. Successive UK governments have denied complicity in rendition or torture.
But the letter suggests M16 involvement - and the BBC understands authorisation was given by the Labour government.

Libya’s former Prince declared leader of Cyrenaica Transitional
by Darius Kadivar on Wed Mar 07, 2012 07:31 AM PSTEast Libyan leaders declare autonomy from Tripoli (France 24)

The congress in Benghazi named Ahmed al-Senussi, a relative of Libya’s former king and a political prisoner under Gaddafi, as leader of the self-declared Cyrenaica Transitional Council. An eight-point declaration said the “Cyrenaica Provincial Council is hereby established to administer the affairs of the province and protect the rights of its people”.
It said, though, that it accepted the NTC as “the country’s symbol of unity and its legitimate representative in international arenas.”The declaration in Benghazi does not carry legal force. It was not clear if the Cyrenaica council would operate within the framework of the NTC, or as a rival to it.One analyst said the congress in Benghazi would change little on the ground.“
Today’s statement from Benghazi was more a declaration by a group in favour of a high degree of autonomy, rather than a declaration of that autonomy itself,” said Alex Warren, a director of Frontier, a Middle East and North Africa consultancy.“In reality, Libya is now effectively composed of many de facto self-governing towns and cities, overseen by a weak central authority,” he said.
“The process of integrating these into a new political and economic structure will be volatile ... but I don’t necessarily see it as the spark for any major civil conflict.”

Nobody thought Khomeini was a unifying figure

by Esfand Aashena on Wed Mar 07, 2012 05:55 AM PSTWe can debate this all day long but I know you view Monarchy as the best alternative for Iran so no chance of me being able to convice you otherwise!
All I'm saying is that "Prince" Chubby is not a unifying figure. For one thing he is an unknown to the majority population who were born after 1979. If anything he is just a novelty to them, like Michael Jackson or Madonna.
In all of Arab spring there has not been a country where they have a unifying figure. Unifying figures are not fruits where you can pick the ripest one of any tree!
Right now we're so divided that when there is a unifying figure for millions of people (Mousavi), equal number of people, if not more, ridicule and dismiss him.
Nelson Mandella spent 20 years in Prison. Sui Aki (spelling) in Thailand spent years under house arrest. These are two unifying figures that I can think of. We may never see a unifying figure in our lifetime and by our lifetime I mean Prince Chubby's lifetime as well.
After him, do you seriously think that his eldest daughter is really heir to the peacock throne?

Mark my Words : May Libya serve as a lesson to us Iranians !
by Darius Kadivar on Tue Mar 06, 2012 05:58 AM PSTCOMPLAINING JOMHURYKHAH: What Have the Pahlavis EVER Done For Us ? ;0)
In a Post IRI iran be sure that the Kurds, Baloutch and Azeris may well call for separate states too. Hence why I adovocate a Restoration of the former Constitution of 1906 as a first step towards restoring our democratic rights:
Crown Prince Reza on importance of "Checks and Balances" of future regime
Cyrus Amir-Mokri on Pros and Cons of 1906 Constitution We can then move to the next step in amending the constitution so as to fit it to more contemporary standards in order to create our secular Parliamentary or representative democracy whatever you wish to call it. But without a framework and common denominator No Nation Building let alone democratic state can be achieved. The ENEMY OF GOOD is PERFECTION !
All other options are merely confusing our own long term interests and collective coexistence.
Mark My Words for the future cause there is an ocean between what we like to have ideally and the reality of a nation whose identity and even present challenges are ALWAYs shaped by the Past. Whether you want it or not the Past will ALWAYS demand accountability for better or for worse. Iran is no exception to the rule ...After 40 years of Gaddafi's brutal rule the countty which was once united as the Kingdom of Libya which operated as a more or less Constitutional Monarchy under King Idris ( the flag of which was hailed during the revolution which ousted Gaddafi) is now threatened by separatism due to the lack of a unifying figure withing the Transitional Council most of whom are composed of former officials of the Gaddafi regime.
Royal Restoration could have truly kept Libya united under a common ideal and more importantly thanks to a well drafted and acceptable constitution which would have respected the multi ethnic nature of the Libyan nation so brutally divided and suppressed along ethnic lines during Gaddafi's tyranical 42 years rule.
Hesitation amongst the divided transitional council in trying to confuse the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people at large in the name of vague promises of "democracy" and "charia" laws ( the latter already present during the Gaddafi regime but not under the former Monarchy ) is bound to lead to the explosion of Libya into ethnic wars.
Don't think we Iranians are in anyway more wise or intellectually superior to these Libyans we want to look down at.
However different a country They are faced with EXACTLY the same challenges our country will face in a Post IRI Iran:
RESTORATION: Shapour Bakhtiar advocates Restoring the Monarchy
Nation building requires a Clear objective added to political maturity and collective awareness of the challenges ahead. The real question remains do we have one ?
I am not so sure ...
