Protesters have breached the wall of the US embassy in Cairo and torn down a US flag to voice their anger about a US-made film which they say insults the Prophet Muhammad.

The flag, which was flying at half mast to mark the 9/11 attacks, was replaced by an Islamist banner.

Among the film's producers is said to be a pastor who burnt copies of the Koran earlier this year.

Egypt's Mubarak 'health worsens'

(bbc)

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been moved from prison to an army hospital in the capital, Cairo, where he remains in a critical condition.

He is said to have had a series of strokes and to be on a life support machine. Reports that he was "clinically dead" were later denied. But there is no official statement.

The reports come amid protests over disputed presidential election results and new powers for the military.

Mubarak, 84, was ousted last year.

On 2 June, he was jailed for life for his role in the deaths of protesters.

There have been frequent reports since then that his health has deteriorated, many of which have proved wrong.

Mubarak's wife, Suzanne, is reported to be at her husband's bedside at the hospital in Maadi, a suburb south of Cairo.

Egypt's Mubarak faces fate: Death, prison or freedom? (cnn)

In what Egyptians have dubbed the trial of the century, Hosni Mubarak faces a judge Saturday to find out his fate in a long-awaited verdict that is sure to play a crucial role in the Arab nation's future.

About 5,000 Egyptian police will be on hand for the verdict, which could send angry crowds into Cairo's streets in a violent replay of the popular revolution that led to Mubarak's downfall.

Mubarak was charged with corruption, misappropriation of funds and issuing orders to kill demonstrators calling for his ouster. About 840 people died and more than 6,000 others were wounded in the Egyptian uprising, according to Amnesty International.

Mubarak could receive the death penalty. Or a prison term. Or be acquitted altogether.

Egypt: Mubarak murder trial resumes (cnn)

Cairo (CNN) -- Prosecutors began presenting their case Tuesday in the trial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is accused of ordering protesters killed during the country's uprising last year.

Khaled Abu Bakr, a civil rights lawyer involved in the trial, said prosecutor Mustapha Suleiman delivered the opening arguments.

"Mubarak is a tyrant who aimed to hand the rule to his younger son Gamal, who promoted corruption in Egypt, allowing his friends and relatives to destroy the country without accountability," Suleiman told the court, according to Abu Bakr.

"Mubarak's wife Suzanne was discreetly running the country and treated senior government officials in a humiliating, aggressive manner in order to keep a stronghold on the decision-making," Suleiman said.

About 840 people died and more than 6,000 were wounded in the 18 days of uprising that toppled Mubarak, according to Amnesty International.
