Pupil's hair cut as punishment (bbc, video)

A local court in Egypt has ordered a teacher to pay a fine and serve a six-month suspended sentence after she cut a student's hair.

Iman Abu Bakr cut 11-year-old Mona Barbesh's hair as punishment for not wearing the hijab to school.

Scalp Infection Therapy

by radius-of-the-persian-cat on

Dear Darius,

Thanks for posting this movie clip and the information. Kariostami of course is a great name in cinematography, clearly in the league together with S.Eisenstein, L. Bunuel, Fritz Lang and other pioneers.

Thanks also for the information about scalp infections in children and X-ray treatment. This was done in several mediterranean and ME countries after 2. WW and the fifties. The infection is a fungus called Tinea Capitis, erroneously called Ringworm. In Israel the long-term detrimental health effects of the X.ray therapy was intensively investigated and discussed in the public (books and even a movie). There was a slight, but detectable increase in the risk to develop thyroid and brain tumors. There were also a very clear negative effects reported related to some neurological and mental problems. Overview is here in Wikipedia.

For the proper scientific article search for the author Siegal Sadetzki in NCBI Medline.  Another big cohort of children was treated the same way in the 50s in Serbia. My research group is currently initiating a medical study on these patients (they are now in their 60s).

It would be interesting to include Iranians who were treated the same way in such a study. But in case you know any of those person who as kid were X-ray treated for scalp infection, please don't worry them. There is no 1:1 causality, in particular with cancer. Most of the people never reported any long term problems, but statistically there was a link. Does anybody know, how many kids were treated this way ? in Serbia were about 50 00, in Israel 20 000 (mainly sephardic immigrants from northern africa and arabic countries).

Greetings radius

PS: Dear Darius, REA recently suggested you might want to translate Bahareh Hedayat's prison letter to french ?  If yes, please respond to MPDs blog or to the link above.
