Well...

It's too bad that Phelps is such a goofy looking/acting guy! He doesn't make for much of a role model in my opinion! How many American kids are going to grow up saying "I want to be like Micheal Phelps!" hmmm? And look at that Sports Illustrated cover... can you imagine a pic like that on a box of Wheaties? Kids will be too scared to go to school after breakfast.

Also, there is a fundamental unfairness in the Swimming events. The record holder for most gold medlas ina single olympics prior to Phelps was Mark Spitz:

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Spitz

Also a swimmer! It seems there are too many medal events in swimming!

(Note: I still remember watching Spitz at the 1972 Olympics when I was a little kid and he was hella lot more impressive than goofball Phelps)

IRANdpokt:

US sent a team of 600 athletes to the games. A lot of these athletes
were in the best form, trained and groomed to be the best. Historically
USA has won the medals every year.

Hmmm... not really! Historically, the countries who have wanted to be the world's great powers have gotten all the medals. The US has been at or near the top since the middle of the 20th century. But teh Soviets used to give us a serious run for our money. Now, it's the Chinese.

Try to translate "soccer moms" to persian!!!  there is no such a thing,
is there? no parent in Iran dedicates his or her time to go watch his
kid and a bunch of others kick a ball aimlessly and cheer them too!

Kids with "soccer moms" don't generally growup to be good athletes. American kids get into sports because other kids think its cool. Having a soccer mom (or any other kind of mom) cheering you from the sidelines is so far from cool it isn't even funny. Although, some quite encouragement at home is always helpful :)

And have you ever noticed how bad Americans are at soccer? you think that is a coincidence? Thanks, soccer moms!

The
iranian kids play on the streets and have to hide it from the parents
who would mostly discourage them! We don't cheer our kids, we scold
them if they don't measure up to our high standards. That's not the way
to raise champions.

China doesn't have a culture that encourages athleticism either. What they have is a highly organized "system" for producing great athletes. It works for them. It probably wouldn't work in teh US. It probably wouldn't work in Iran. But if Iran wanted to be competitive in international sports, it could be. I have no doubt of that.

Indeed

by David ET on

During Shah's era mismanagment and corruption were abundant also. That is why there was a revolution to make things better and not even worse!

Yet that does not relieve or justify IR, especially 30 years later where everything has evolved in the world except many things that has regressed in Iran including sports

The post addressed olympics but nowhere indicated that we dont have bigger issues than sports

but also

mosht nemooneh kharvar ast !

Anyway Iranians, athelets or our culture is NOT the first to blame but the few have forcefully taken over the government .

so we failed in olympics just as we are failing in so much of progress in todays world thanks to IR and its policies (or lack of)

First and foremost I continue to blame the few who are ruling our nation. no ifs and buts and no apologies or justifications

Call me an apologist...

by IRANdokht on

But then again you think I am a monarchist too, so lets see:

this monarchist/IRI-apologist (only by your definition) believes that our problems are deep-rooted because:

even when the mosques were not as many and as popular as today, we didn't have a lot of support for our athletic programs. As you saw someone mentioned earlier: our "hero" Takhti had to keep a job to support his family. He didn't even see IRI!

I remember when we could swim in the same pools and there were plenty of places one could learn to swim and play other sports. I also remember we were allowed to go there once a week on fridays IF we had done our homework and one of the parents had enough spare time to be there with us. None of the kids I knew had any ambition to take those sports to a competitive level. It just wasn't an option or considered any kind of significant achievement to do so.

In Iran, the emphasis is put on the academics and even the kids whose family situation can afford to let them be involved in sports, are forced to excel in becoming "shagerd aval" and someday a doctor or an engineer instead.

In Iran there is no scholarships awarded to athletes and it's the common perception that athletic activities and training would hinder the kid's academic progress.

These are not IRI issues, as much as you and I would love to blame them for anything we can think of.

Yes it would take the government to place some incentives in place and open some facilities (or at least allow the private sector to do so) but that would require a demand for such actions and also at this time changing people's thinking and motivating them to enroll in sports. Are you kidding? they can't even feed the kids "taghzieh rayegan" and provide them with a roof over their head!

IRI has far bigger issues than not motivating the youngsters to play sports!!

Yes its not fair

by David ET on

Yes it's not fair, that the Islamic Republic does not consider being a professional athlete a more than full time job and does not provide them proper financial and other opportunities and benefits so that they can focus on what they are good at.

Yes its not fair that due to mismanagement, party bazi, having our athelete federations run by bunch of non-professional family and friends of mullahs,  our atheletes have such a bad sport management .

Yes its not fair that our female atheletes have to compete in full clothing without proper ventialtion (eg 90 minutes running in soccer) because of Islamic Republic Hijab policy

Yes its not fair that our youth do not have proper and sufficient access to sports while our oil income is at historic high but there is plenty of cheap drugs are available to them

Yes it not fair that while we can have and do have many micheal phelps if opportunities are given to us but our people are not given the means and opportunities and training but there is lot of hadith and nonesense about how to walk in and out of toilet etc. Iranians have proven worldwide that when they were provided opportunities in western societies, they excel beyond others, look at so many US corporations such as Ebay etc created by Iranians. NO IT IS NOT CULTURAL.

Yes its not fair that our women can not attend stadiums where male atheletes compete to see and encourage their brother

Noone expected Iran to have as many medals as US

But actually if anyone is blaming the atheletes and Iranians for our shortcomings are the ones who don't blame it on the Islamic Republic's policies and mismanagements.

Problem is not our people, Iranians historically have good atheletic potentials if GIVEN the opportunities

Indeed as the last person said, if they closed so many mosques and imamzadehs and turned them to sport centers, medical centers , schools and libararies, we would have had Madineh Faazeleh !

Our main problem in the past 30 years has not been the mullahs, there are not too many of them. Problem has been apologist mentality of so many (STILL!)

IRAN After Mullahs

We must convert all those Mosques to libraries and Gymes for youth to develop mental & physical skills.  These new libraries and Gymes would attract most Iranian youth with different talents. Ofcourse, it happens in free IRAN.

Wanna Be American

by YekNafar (not verified) on

What a superficial and down right stupid thing to say. You are comparing a country with a much larger populations than that of Iran. A country that send more athletes and spends more on them than Iran. You are comparing US to Iran? Need I remind you that your hamvatans in Iran don't have the same resources as your new hamvatans in the US.
A fair comparison would be to question and analyze why the US spends more on athletes than Iran. Or what training and avenues are open to Iranian Athletes. Or compare obstacles faced by athletes in different countries and so on.
In your emotional hatred of the IRI, perhaps you should calm down and do some analysis instead of throw slogans all over the place. Stick to blogging about Obama and Hillary.

Fairness

by Jean Louis DiZ Nef (not verified) on

The issue is like Irandokht says, our athletes have to hold a regular job somewhere to feed their family, unlike many other countries.

The best example to give would be our world champion the late Gholam Reza Takhtee, whom until the last day of his life was a mere employee of "Sazmaneh Bargh", our regimes have to be ashamed of themselves, shame on bunch of bearded thieves who are stealing from a poor, silent nation. Their Imam Zaman when arrives will bust each of em's ass and kick the crap out of them. Yam Imam Zaman hurry up and earn GOLD medal for the Iranians and kick these bastards out of our motherland. Amen Ya Rabbal Alamein! Now I feel pretty good.

lets be fair

by IRANdokht on

Michael Phelps is a phenomena. His body movements are being studied and I even heard someone say that physically speaking he swims more like a dolphin than a human.

US sent a team of 600 athletes to the games. A lot of these athletes were in the best form, trained and groomed to be the best. Historically USA has won the medals every year. Phelps is till the only one of that highly trained team to win all those medals alone. That makes any specific comparison to him pointless. As for the rest of the team, they grew up and got trained where games and competitions are encouraged and celebrated. Athletes are respected for their hard work and rewarded for the achievements.

In Iran, even our professional  football players had to have a "real job" too! most of the athletes in Iran are not able to dedicate as much time and energy and money to their training. We're not an athletic nation.

Try to translate "soccer moms" to persian!!!  there is no such a thing, is there? no parent in Iran dedicates his or her time to go watch his kid and a bunch of others kick a ball aimlessly and cheer them too! The iranian kids play on the streets and have to hide it from the parents who would mostly discourage them! We don't cheer our kids, we scold them if they don't measure up to our high standards. That's not the way to raise champions.

There are many reasons why we don't make the cut at the Olympics. One of them is IRI, but the rest lies with us, our mentality, our cultural handicaps and our failure to recognize the real problems...
