A large coalition of Iranian reformists have formed the THIRD WAVE campaign with the goal of 3rd term presidency of Mohammad Khatami in Iran.

In support of the campaign , Ebrahim Yazdi former minister of first government of Islamic Republic said: "...If the current situation continues, the majority of the reformists movement will chok to extinction and Iranian society will seriously be at a loss....the current atmosphere is too tight and restrictive for the reformists and Khatami's entrance will open some breathing room"

The Third Wave campaign maintains a website and petition at //www.mowj.ir/ . Campaign also has a youtube page at //ca.youtube.com/user/mojesevom

In a campaign gathering, a young poet read a funny poem un-inviting Khatami !

You may be missing THE point

by David ET on

I agree that Yazdi has no credibility and many atrocities and shifts of revolution happend on his watch BUT this campaign is by reformists NOT Yazdi and I just happened to quote Yazdi because it summarizes the general reformists view point in couple of sentences.

It is not the messenger that I am concerned about but the message that is explaining the reason behind this coalition. Unfortunately using Yazdi's quote is distracting you from the real subject.

The question is what will Iranians do in the upcoming presidential election?

Boycott? Unlikely , especially after experience of Ahmadinejad

Pick someone else? Whom?

Revolt? Highly unlikely.

or will they unite behind Khatami and get whatever freedom they can get and then try to organize within the little more breathing space they might get?

This idea also seem to be in line with Ganji's (another reformer) thinking too when he wrote: "Real change will come later, and only when Iranians figure out how to move beyond the current sultanistic regime. In systems such as Iran's, the transition to democracy depends on whether reformists can find enough room to maneuver among the ruler's relationships with state bodies (especially the military), social elites, and foreign powers so as to create various social movements and then use those to inch the country toward democracy."

I do not have much information to form a full opinion yet, nor am I reformer or like Khatami , but at the same time I believe emotionalism has got us where we are and it will not get us far either. Considering that no immediate revolts are in the works for Iranian people who live with the regime and its limitations on a daily basis, this may prove to be the only practical,  tactical and short term alternative in front of them that they might excercise.

No, The reformers are part and parcel of this regime, and they want this corrupt regime to survive, period.

A few of my friends have tried to change my mind about Yazdi, but I am afraid I just can't get over his role in IRI 30 years ago no matter how he supposedly have tried to redeem himself... I am with DK on this one. Yazdi's view/prediction/support is not significant to me.
