World Strongest Man competition in the Olympics is today!

Today is the competition for earning the title of the World Strongest Man!

A little while ago there was an article An Iranian Olympian carries the weight of a nation about the current World Champion, Behdad SalimiKordasiabi and his quest for his first Olympic medal.  In 2011 he broke the World Record in Snatch and is the current WR holder at 214 KG.  All other World Records for the super heavyweight division are held by Hossein RezaZadeh (an Ahmadinejad supporter no less ;-).

Here's an excerpt from the Christian Science Monitor:

Up close, the "world's strongest man" doesn't look as if he's been mislabeled. Behdad Salimi is built like a small warehouse. His neck and head seem to be the same appendage. His arms are bigger than most people's thighs. His thighs ... well, just use your imagination, then double it.

Yet when he shakes hands, he is uncommonly gentle. In fact, for a man who can lift the equivalent of three people over his head, he seems downright genial.

Until he grips a barbell, that is. Suddenly, his jaw tightens. His face contorts. Then he lets out a primal shriek – "ya Ali molaye man" (oh Ali, my leader) – and makes unfathomable amounts of tonnage defy gravity.

Just like the World Fastest Man competition, the World Strongest Man competition is another main event at the Olympics!  I hope he not only wins the gold and get the title again but he shouts "ya Ali molaye man" several times just to annoy some people who get annoyed by these things!

You can watch the live scoreboard and results here.

Hi Mouse,

I can't believe that NBC did not give Iranian gold medalist any air time, but gave the loser so much coverage!

Salimi is only 22 years old, he can compete in 2 more Olympic games!

He got a pretty wife too!

Esfand Aashena

Yeah that's him! Here's pics of the barbell on his neck, OUCH!

Yolanda the German weightlifter was the 2008 Gold medal winner!

by Esfand Aashena on

There was an article where Salimi counted the German guy as his main competition and though I didn't see anything on TV, the Gold Medal winner from Beijing Olympics did not finish and I assume it was due to an injury.  He did good in Snatch but bailed out of the clean and jerk.

As for trying to tie these Olympians' accomplishments to the late Shah it is such a pitty, or should I say petty!

Everything is sacred

I watched NBC Olympic coverage from 8:00 to 12:00, it did not show the Iranian won the gold for weightlifting, but it showed the barbell hit German weightlifter's neck! Unbelievable!

All these champions and their success are partly due to the late Shah's effort for building sports facilities and providing conditions so that talents like these can thrive.

Shlomo loves the Shah!

Free Style wrestling which is Iran's strongest sport starts on Thursday. Iran is the world champion and should be able to get some medals.

There are also 2 male and 1 female Taekwando participants.

Thank you, Faramarz, for the update!

Any more prospects for more medals or they are pretty much done?

Any potential Taikwondo medals?

Iran won a gold medal for Taikwondo in the Beijing Games!

I hope all the medalists are garanteed for free chickens for life plus other tangible rewards.

Kazakhstan gives their gold medalists $250,000 each!

Now Iran's medal count ranks #17 in the world and so does her population! Not bad!

Salimi ties in his Snatch lift with 208 kg!

by Esfand Aashena on

Each weightlifter gets 3 chances/lifts and take the best/heaviest lift.

Salimi is tied in his Snatch with 208 kg.  Going conservative after his Russian competitor lifted 208 right before him.

Sajjad Anoushiravani Hamlabad the second Iranian weightlifter in this division lifted 204 kg the 3rd heaviest in the Snatch.

It was very close and very exciting to follow each of the 3 lifts by each athlete!

Now on to Clean and Jerk to determine the final medals!

Everything is sacred

Group A starts. Salimi goes last and planned lift the heaviest!
