"Ferdowsi: from NASA to Paradise"

Congratulations to Bobak Ferdowsi, flight director of NASA, and all at NASA on their Mars rover Curiosity landing this week! What a week for people of Iranian heritage. Iran wins Gold for "Strongest Olympian" at the London 2012 Olympics (thank you Salimi) - and then, a young, Iranian-American, Bobak Ferdowsi, catapults many of our hopes and aspirations!

"Ferdowsi": If NASA wanted a Persian name in Space - could you get more honorable than "Ferdowsi"? That was so serendipitous to me, and that fact alone, had me thrilled - add to that the joy I felt for NASA and their Mars landing, and it  was overwhelming.

"Hair": Most of you will know by now that Bobak Ferdowsi swiftly  went on to become an internet sensation!!!! The guy who made NASA cool again - with that haircut! From kids aspiring to be scientists - to thousands of marriage proposals etc. When reading through the fans' words, I realized that it was also something in the warmth of Bobak's smile, as well as the tears he shed when Curiosity landed,  that had captivated them, together with that "hair"!!

HAFEZ: For today's post, I wanted to include "Ferdowsi." First - a little tid bit on the word. Most reporters this past week  had no idea that Ferdowsi is the same word as Paradise. "Paradise" and the Mars landing!! What an incredible juxtaposition.  F replaced P in Persian after the Arab invasion - so you get "Perdowsi" which is essentially the same word as Paradise, which in Iran was a "walled garden." Iran did produce the world's first gardens of Paradise, after all. (Penelope Hobhouse's book - "Gardens of Persia" outlines this history magnificently. I highly recommend it.)

Today's Beyt/Couplet not only contains the concept of "Ferdowsi" but takes it further.  A peacock comes into it - Are you kidding me, Hafez joon? With all the talk of Bobak's hair? Yes! Hafez threw in a Peaccok!! The Beyt is a celebration of a beloved that Hafez is physically describing, her hair, her rosey cheeks. He then wants to compare the image of the beloved's hair crowing her face  to the image of a Peacock landing in heaven. Peacock's were consdiered heavenly birds - "morgheh beheshti." Hafez draws a parallel between the beautiful hair of his beloved, perched atop her rosey cheeks, and the concept of a heavenly Peacock landing in the gardens of Paradise.

زلف مشکین تو در گلشن فردوس عذار

چیست٫  طاووس که در  باغ نعیم افتادست

Zolfeh meshkin-eh to dar golshan-eh Ferdows-eh ezar

Chist? Tavoos keh dar bagh-eh na'im oftadast

Your musky jet-black hair perched atop the rosebed of the garden of thy cheek

Is what? A heavenly Peacock that into the garden of Paradise has falllen

Bobak Ferdowsi too, "has fallen" and landed in the gardens of NASA, proudly wearing his fabulous hair. Bobak then went on to add his heavenly touch and land NASA's rover on Mars. Like the Peacock in the garden of Heaven - Curiosity  has also landed on the red, dusty surface of planet Mars. via our own Bobak Ferdowsi. Congratulations!

I write this as I'm getting ready for our Saturday "Learning from Hafez in DC" gatherings, in Washington. These classes are taught in cycles of 6-8 Saturdays and last month, we reached our 100th Hafez student. 100 Iranians, either too young to know Hafez, or having forgotten him, coming to savor the wisdom of a national treasure. PAAIA has a proper feature on this class - but below, a YouTube clip for you:

dreams

by Hafez for Beginners on

Thank you for all the comments and keeping the post interesting. Whichever way we look at it, I am very proud of Bobak Ferdowsi. It's wonderful seeing people achieve their dreams that take years to build, from Olympians to scientists  - all of which occured during the same week.

I understand what youre trying to say. But the reason humans set out on projects like Apollo and Curiosity is not one of extravaganza and political pomp, but in essence it is a manifestation of our desire to reach takaamol: The grand achievement is not getting to Mars or the Moon per se (and bringing back rocks e.g.), but the process of doing so and rising to the challenge. IOW, what makes exploring the universe so worthwhile is not the endpoint or end result, but the road that we traverse to get to the endpoint. Hence the intertwined nature of "dars" (study and learning) to "mondares".

Mamour/Fesenjoon2/Demo: I'm pleased about your more civilized tone towards each other - and some interesting links, too - thanks.  Much of the art of communication is trying to make sure we "disagree without being disagreeable." (I still have much to learn from that domain - as Iranians we find this very hard to do - to make a point, without insulting another party, often just for the sake of it.) So.... Thanks, again.

CONGRATULATIONS again, to Bobak Ferdowsi and his Colleagues at NASA on their MARS Curiosity project. I still love the idea of "Ferdowsi" - just that word - being associated with such a significant achievement this past week. A very happy coiincidence.

Boys: Thanks very much for all the technical updates and glad that the "jang o dava" tone between you went down...

I'm not very technical - just happy for anyone celebrating such a big dream. When you hear Bobak speak, it comes through, the utter joy. And dreams that don't hurt anyone - (a fraction of the money spent on a simple Presidential election) - and help to advance something, anything, are touching. Thanks, again.

Zendanian

"Curiosity," "The U.S." and "God" : for Dummies and Idiots both!

by Zendanian on

1) Curiosty's scientific capacities is a lot more than just sanppping photos and sending them to Earth, this $5 billion dollars flying lab is also equipped to drill the surface of Mars, extract its soil, analyze the content, and send back to Earth the result of its finding. Of course for blind fools still lost in "the book" of an illetrate child molester, "god" had predicted all this thousands of years ago, but for the rest of humanity, this is considered a major achievement.

2) The U.S.: As much negative aspects and limitations we could assign to this nation-state, at the same time it also holds some of the major achievements of modern world, in culture, politics and science. From the American Revolution, to Civil Wars, to Civil Rights movements, to the Occupy Movement, the U.S. has always had major, significant social movements that were emulated throughout the world. Also keep in mind that "Social Amnesia" as such has not escaped the notice of American social scientists,

Social Amnesia:

A Critique of Contemporary Psychology

//books.google.com/books/about/Social_Amnesia.html?id=ShKUT5rSpBMC

The difference between these homegrown critiques of US culture and our fellow village idiots, is that the former is motivated by a great humanistic impulse, whereas the latter is originated in an ignorant, arrogant, populist demagogy.

3) Last and the least: this obtuse notion of "GOD." It simply does not exist, get used to it. This is merely a figment of human's twisted, weak, sick, imagination. An impulse to place a fictional authority above oneself, so as to  accommodate for all humanity's limitations and non-understanding. Whereas in pre-historic times, such an obtuse course of thought would have seem "normal," in our era, with all our advancement in though, science and philosophy, such notions are simply too ridiculous, and only benefitial to organized religions: the MOST CORRUPT FORCES ON EARTH.

NASA type projects are often so challenging and difficult, that they necessitate the creation of new technologies. That is why one of the main reasons for undertaking grand projects like The Moon Landing, or Mars Curiosity, or even The Large Hadron Collider, has to do with the technology that comes out as a result of these huge efforts.

For example, did you know that thousands of patents from NASA space programs are responsible for technologies that benefit the everyday lives of people (from medicine to agriculture)? See a sample list at:

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spin-off_technologies

//spinoff.nasa.gov/shuttle.htm

If the world is full of poverty, it's not because Mars exploration programs are wasting our financial and intellectual resources. It's because the world is full of greedy bastards that want to force others to submit to their will. In the case of Iran, it's the Mullahs that refuse to budge from power at the cost of people's well being. Ali sat aside for 23 years, even though (as we are told) it was his right to rule. Did he throw monkey wrenches at the other 3 Caliphs and start a conflict for his right? No. So what makes these mullahs think they should stay in power for 35 years at the cost of dragging the country into war and chaos? A country that is 2nd in oil, 3rd in gas, etc. shouldn't have poverty. It's human ignorance, greed, and totalitarianism that creates poverty, not reaching for the stars!!

God says: "contemplate the wonders of creation" (Quran 3:191). Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, explore the universe, and find the "Signs of Allah" in His creation, as per 2:164, for example.

Jihaalat, is not something your Quran wishes Muslims to associate themselves with. And calling scientific projects of NASA idiotic, is a perfect example of Jihalat. And I'll tell you why in my next post (2/2).

What does GOD say about the Mars?

by Demo on

Isn't it something that the commentator below, Fesenjoon2, who been scorning Islam & Mohammed for all his/her life is now quoting Mohammed as Prophet Mohammed? And Prophet Mohammed could not have had possibly said (a false hadith!) that because GOD says very clearly about all cosmos as below in Quran:

"We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty of the stars,- (for beauty only) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits," (Verses 6 & 7, Chapter 37).

Whether the cost be 2.5 B or 25 B (a type'o error & sorry for that) makes no difference. Even spending a buck is too much for such mission as that could help to feed a poor family somewhere in world. And let Moshe lives with his dream of finding diamond in Mars. No diamonds but radio active materials not transferable to earth in Mars.Sorry you greedy Moshe.

Iraj Khan: Interesting information on NASA and Iranian interns, thanks.

Fesenjoon2 and Mamour: Thanks - Hafez has his own views on "science and faith/religion." There are a few gems there. Perhaps another Blog can be about that - watch this space.

LA TIMES: A lovely quote from Bobak Ferdowsi:

LATimes: Do you think your image will inspire more kids to think NASA -- and science in general -- might actually be cool?

Bobak Ferdowsi: That would be like a dream come true for me. I would love to be working here 10 years from now and some guy who was in high school or middle school at the time sees me and is like, "I remember you, you're one of the reasons I got into NASA." Even if one kid is like that, I'd probably get a little emotional.

NASA has had an open door policy towards accepting young Iranian college students as interns. I personally knew two Iranian students who worked for NASA as interns.

I was reading an article about him where his name was spelled 'Ferdoski' and his nationality was not mentioned.

Positive images of Iranians and Iran are welcomed, be it Hafez or Ferdosi, thanks :)

Iranlovesisrael: Thanks for the correction of the cost of this mission! I did want to add, out of respect for those persecuted because of the very same star of david that is in your post's image, I would recommend refraining from the usage of the term "rag-head" for any group.  The same people who used such sweepingly derogatory terms caused much suffering in Europe during WW2. But I do agree with you, that celebrating a person of Iranian heritage's positive contribution to NASA is healthy. Thanks.

DREAMS: There have been comments about dreams here - whether it is right or wrong to dream of Mars. For me, so long as humans are doing something that is positive that happens to be their dream, it is touching and humbling. I'm very happy for Bobak Ferdowsi and his NASA colleagues and congratulate them, again! Their dream is different to mine -  but pursuing your hearts desire, whatever it might be so long as it is not hurting people, is very honorable. Hafez champions nourishing your heart - Congratulations again NASA and Bobak.

Off 'Peacock' and Martians....!

by IRANLOVESISRAEL on

First of all, it is 2.5 B and not 25 B. The cost of Curiosity, that is! Second, Mars has large reserves of gold, diamond, and other precious stones. Women/chicks (diamonds are the girl's best friends) on Earth dig these items and there is a limited supply of them. My uncle, Moshe, in New York who is a diamond dealer has already set his eyes on getting to Mars. He has already bought acres of land on the northern hemisphere of the planet for excavation. By the year 2035, there will be man mission to the Mars by NASA. America and Israel must get there before the Chinese and their rag-head friends the mullahs.

Shlomo is going to Mars with you or without you!.

Travel to Mars for Idiots

by Demo on

FYI: No offence meant in using the word 'Idiot' per se. Too much respect indeed to describe any party involved with the spending of 25 billions (25 with 9 zeors in front of that) dollars to send a 'camera robot' to a dry/super cold/airless/all radio active materials surfaced planet. Astronomers with their inexpensive telescopes have already discovered all such and with a tiny fraction of that budget they could have brought the whole Mars to us. And while the earthy humans are suffering from all sorts of problems like draught, hunger, wars, diseaes, and etc. what is exciting for them to hear about 'Travelling to Mars' anyways. And that is why the world often sees Americans as 'idiots.' Because America is a nation of amnesiacs. And sadly Baback looks like one them in his picture & certainly not like a 'Peacock' or not like an Iranaian of Ferdowsi, Hafez, Rumi, and too many other heavenly peacocks types like them.

I guess to meet the standard of being "cool" in IC is one with a rag or turban around their heads. Actually, it's quite refreshing to see folks of Iranian descent in the areas of scientific explorations. We have enough of Khamenei lovers and Ahmadinejds's admirers is IC. We don't need one in JPL!
