In between Saudi and Iran the new moon got lost!
by Iqbal Latif
30-Aug-2011

All phases of the Moon for next six thousand year period are well known and scientifically plotted, it is possible to know exact position and emergence of the new moon even for a next million years. Yet unluckily the moon always get lost somewhere between Tehran and Najdiclouds! ; Muslims can't seem to agree on the new moon? Was it there or not on 29th Aug 2011? Saudis saw it; but Iranians missed it for full 24 hours, the case of missing moon intrigues me to no end.

Muslims in the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Jordan are celebrating Eid. Meanwhile, Muslims in Iran, Indonesia, South Africa, India, Pakistan and Oman are not celebrating Eid until Wednesday. Iran announced today that the new moon appeared today not yesterday as Saudis thought? A moon missing for 24 hours and not really felt by anyone is odd?

The tables available through the following NASA links give the date and time (Universal Time) of all phases of the Moon for the six thousand year period i.e. -1999 to +4000 (2000 BCE to 4000 CE) so why Muslims can't seem to agree until this day 'When is Eid?'

//eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/phase/phases2001.html

The new moon according to this 'Phases of the Moon calculation for 2011 was on 'Aug 29 03:04;' for the year 2000, the length of the mean synodic month (New Moon to New Moon) is 29.530588 days (=29d12h44m03s). However, the length of any one synodic month can vary from 29.26 to 29.80 days due to perturbing effects of the Sun on the Moon's eccentric orbit.

Saad al-Khathlan, professor of jurisprudence at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University in Saudi Arabia, told al-Anbaa newspaper of Kuwait that disagreements over deciding the first day of Ramadan or Eid have existed since the first days of Islam.

Each and every movement of moon and Index to Five Millennium Catalog of Lunar Eclipses is well recorded, it is an irrefutable truth the position of Sun and moon are life blood of our earthily living, how can we judge them wrong by 24-48 hours?

//eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEcat5/LEcatalog.html

According to Khathlan " for the past fourteen centuries, Muslims have never agreed to celebrate Eid on the same day." They can easily agree the findings of sciences allows that unique luxury of unison of all people and nations; if all of them cannot agree as one on celebrating a feasts what else is harmony all about? Now the context is different unlike 100 years ago the world could have celebrated disconnected feasts but now a connected global village needs connected articulation of and expression feelings, if it matters to the Mullahs and Ayatollahs.

Clergy can find that Orbital science is not an alien subject in context of Quran but still the dispute remains.

“Allah is the One who made the sun a shining object and the moon as a light, and measured out (their) stages, that you may know the number of years and the count (of time), Allah did not create this but in truth; He (thus) explains His signs in detail, for those who understand.” (The Quran, 10:5) “By the sky full of paths and orbits.” The Quran, 51:7) The entire universe is full of paths and orbits. “(Allah is the) One who created the night , and the day, and the sun and the moon, swim along, each in its (own) orbit.” (21:33) “It is not permitted to the sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day, each swims along in its (own) orbit.” (36:40)

It is mentioned in another verse, too, that the Sun is not static but moves in a definite orbit.

“The sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed); that is the decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.” (Yaseen 36:38) Going by orbits and discipline of nature, moon will appear at a fixed time and can be recorded for thousands of years, but reason should get an upper hand over the war of theocratic struggle.

Saudis were dead right today for a change. It is not permissible to fast on ‘Eid day, based on the sayings reported from the Prophet that forbid observing Sawm (Fasting) on the days of ‘Eid-ul-Fitr. (the Festival of Breaking the Fast)There are very few certainties in life, death is one though a morbid thought but pertinent in context of what I want to say. Sun rise, sunset and new moon, solar eclipse and lunar eclipse with all their movement are part of a complex system that we call our solar system. Solar system and orbital science is one of the obvious few tell tale signs of natures discipline.

There are very few certainties in life, death is one though a morbid thought but pertinent in context of what I want to say. Sun rise, sunset and new moon, solar eclipse and lunar eclipse with all their movements are part of a complex system that we call our solar system. Solar system and orbital science is one of the obvious few tell tale signs of natures discipline.

When reason and logic is considered as secondary to ritual and custom, science becomes ineffective. It is good to see that all the latest strategic deadly weapons are properly employed, so are deadly projectiles to kill and also in the field of medicine the latest scientific discoveries are employed but this small little thing of the 'position of the new moon 'that creates so much of consternation and anguish and quarrel cannot be agreed upon.

Please leave this to Astronomical science and scientific calculations ; lunar and solar cycles are the only certainty; we have otherwise a collapse of our solar system, a moon that loses it path and delays its appearance by 24 hours will create mass calamitous devastation on the earth orbital movements. We will annihilate!

O Sultan if my clothes are ripped and torn...

by Iqbal Latif on

 @"laalaayi baladan, vali khabeshoon nemire..."

O Sultan, my master,
if my clothes are ripped and torn
it is because your dogs
with claws are allowed to tear me

It is a saga of a nation sans unity, sans tolerance, sans justice and sans compassion. I wrote in 2002 ‘Defeatism has become prevalent in the Islamic World and self-inflicted pain has become pleasure. Forbearance, fortitude, patience - key qualities to make any nation great, has been sacrificed on the altar of hostility towards the US. The famous Khomeinite slogan of "murg bey Amerika" has become the clarion call of the extremist Shiites and OBL faction of the extremist Wahabbis alike. The commonality of purpose to establish a medieval order and arrest the lightening progress of mankind has taken precedence over traditional sectarian disputes of the centuries.

The goal of the orthodox clerics and the Shiite "Marjaiiya" is to establish Najaf as the next Vatican of Islam, dethroning Qom and Mecca along the way. This should put them at odds with the Wahabbis who take pride and seek legitimacy from their custodianship of the two holies mosques in Islam; Mecca and Medina. However the two seek to “cleanse” the "cradle of Islam" from the "threat" of freedom, democracy and dissent in the region. The unholy troika of Shiite Qom, Alqaeda and Allawite Syria have buried their dissimilarities for their own continued existence; they very well realize that the new emerging "waft of freedom" in the Middle east like the recent peaceful Iraqi elections will mark these 'extremists' as first casualty. Bogged minds cannot sustain freedom; freedom of expression is an antidote for the poison they endorse.’ Sadly things have only become worst:

O Sultan! Because I dare to approach your deaf walls,
because I tried to reveal my sadness and tribulation,
I was beaten with my shoes

O Sultan, my master,
if my clothes are ripped and torn
it is because your dogs
with claws are allowed to tear me

Unity and peace

"...... expressed their confidence that Unity, Peace and Stability would prevail all over the Islamic world. They also urged Muslims to uphold the values of tolerance, justice and compassion."

Iqbal jaan, this is yet another case of, as we say in Parsi: "laalaayi baladan, vali khabeshoon nemire..."

It is the muslims who are killing muslims for the past 10 or so years in increasing numbers. This unity is as elusive and non-existent as the liberties they have afforded their people.....and as nonsensical as the peace they claim to be based upon...Wouldn't you agree?

Not about 'Eid' it is about 'reason and faith' at two extremes!

by Iqbal Latif on

Hi Ms. Maryam; you missed the point here that the whole issue of this article was not about Eid, may be you are right who cares; but it was about 'reason and faith' at two extremes on what is the most important event on the calendar of Mr Khamenei and Saudis.

From Jeddah and Tehran the message was 'Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and The office of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Monday/Tuesday expressed their confidence that Unity, Peace and Stability would prevail all over the Islamic world. They also urged Muslims to uphold the values of tolerance, justice and compassion.

It was about this funny side of event:

''Saudi Arabia announced Monday that the Eid-ul-Fitr feast marking the end of the fasting month of Ramazan will be on Tuesday, in a statement aired on state television Al-Ekhbariyah.

Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest shrines, said the new moon had been sighted and that Ramadan ends on Monday with the feast to follow the next day.

The office of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei released a statement late on Tuesday, announcing August 31 as the first day of the Islamic calendar month of Shawwal.

The statement said that the perception of the new moon had been confirmed for the Leader through several crescent observers in various parts of the country.''

The point of the article is that the 'two prime cradles of Islamic thoughts' made an appeal but that did not cater for either unity, or tolerance, or justice or compassion. If any of these elements would have been applied they would have agreed on a scientific resolution of the issue.

Persian scientest Tusi was used 1000 years ago to fix Nowruz.Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī born 18 February 1201 in Ṭūs, Khorasan (a Persian polymath and a prolific writer: an astronomer, biologist, chemist, mathematician, philosopher, physician, physicist, scientist, theologian and also a Marja Taqleed. The Muslim scholar Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406) considered Tusi to be the greatest of the later Persian scholars)

Why can't they agree now on a scientific process that ensures the unity they plead for? They are ready to break the heart of the atoms using nuclear science; device centrifuges to enrich weapon grade uranium, but are not ready to use the same science to 'listen' to the movements of planets in their orbits

Days are made of earth movement around the Sun and the science they need is 'Astronomy.'

Physical laws of nature that have conquered 'escape velocity' the final hurdle that had yied us to earth gravity; that has helped man to put a 'human on the moon' and sent extra terrestrial voyagers in search of life. We are nomads of the Universe.

Here on our own real estate called 'this earth' the 1.5 billion cannot agree on a single day, you know why because here we become traditionalists and demand science to be out of the window, we need to see the moon, with six by six a luxury of choice with Mullahs no one can see a moon and they end up fighting over a lot moon for 24 hours sometime 48. It is a shame and failure of the system.

It is most important to fix the dates of celebrations. In 11th century CE major reforms of Iranian calendars took place; the principal purpose was to fix the beginning of the calendar year, i.e. Nowrūz, at the vernal equinox.

Accordingly, the definition of Nowruz given by the Iranian scientist Ṭūsī was the following: "the first day of the official new year [Nowruz] was always the day on which the sun entered Aries before noon". Nowrūz officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityMarch equinox, is the first day of spring. At the time of the equinox, the sun is observed to be directly over the equator, and the north and south poles of the Earth lie along the solar terminator; sunlight is evenly divided between the north and south hemispheres.

A broad based rainbow coalition of masses bring about great revolutions; Revolution without harmony and accord are not likely, too much of factionalism and too much of radical rhetoric sometime is counterproductive. The fault lines of this system in Iran and Saudi meander through the core issue of unity and cohesion of entire ummah, a dream that is so surreal. This article highlights rhetoric versus the act of not agreeing on one day of feast; a basic issue that can be resolved with the help of science.

May be Nowruz is far bigger occasion on the minds of Iranian Diaspora (Nowrūz is officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity) but look at this video most kindly and see the priorities and concerns of the Iranian nation; the rank and file on the street, the Bazaars and the elements that makes middle Iran cares about these ideological underpinnings.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiQPEYpCbTQ

There can be no counter revolution if the revolutionaries are devoid of slogans that attract the masses on nearly every issue that has been bungled by the clergy. A counter revolution that is made on the views of Locke and Rousseau may sell well to few self absorbing activists but for a self conscious writer it is important to raise issues of the society that make us look like fools vis the vis the world, people should be reminded how devoid is 'reason from faith; that Mullahs and Ayatollahs have less of unity and more of divisions in their heads.
