I was with the author Shahrnush Parsipur one day and she was talking about I Ching, which is the Chinese version of Faal e Hafez, only more complicated and detailed. I asked her if she could read my I Ching "faal" and she said yes. Cool!

The last time I got a reading was by my mother during her visit to Tehran a couple of years after the revolution. I remember I threw the coins and the I Ching warned about a dark evil man. My mother's interpretation was that the evil man was Khomeini. At the time I was very much into the revolution and I thought it was silly to read into a bunch of coins and an ancinent Chinese text. I laughed it off.

This time I did it for fun.

Parsipur asked me to think of something and throw three coins six times. I thought about "love", threw the coins and the numbers that showed up were 9 7 9 7 9 7. Parsipur said the order of the numbers was unusual and significant (don't ask me how; I wasn't listening carefully. I don't take these things seriously). She said the I Ching commentary for those particular numbers were in Chapters 1 and 64 -- the first and last chapters.

So here's me and love according to Faal e I Ching. I can come back and read it every once in a while when I'm bored :o)

1. Ch'ien / The Creative

above CH'IEN THE CREATIVE, HEAVEN
below CH'IEN THE CREATIVE, HEAVEN

The first hexagram is made up of six unbroken lines. These unbroken lines stand for the primal power, which is light-giving, active, strong, and of the spirit. The hexagram is consistently strong in character, and since it is without weakness, its essence is power or energy. Its image is heaven. Its energy is represented as unrestricted by any fixed conditions in space and is therefore conceived of as motion. Time is regarded as the basis of this motion. Thus the hexagram includes also the power of time and the power of persisting in time, that is, duration. The power represented by the hexagram is to be interpreted in a dual sense in terms of its action on the universe and of its action on the world of men. In relation to the universe, the hexagram expresses the strong, creative action of the Deity. In relation to the human world, it denotes the creative action of the holy man or sage, of the ruler or leader of men, who through his power awakens and develops their higher nature.

THE JUDGMENT

THE CREATIVE works sublime success,
Furthering through perseverance.

According to the original meaning, the attributes [sublimity, potentiality of success, power to further, perseverance] are paired. When an individual draws this oracle, it means that success will come to him from the primal depths of the universe and that everything depends upon his seeking his happiness and that of others in one way only, that is, by perseverance in what is right. The specific meanings of the four attributes became the subject of speculation at an early date. The Chinese word here rendered by "sublime" means literally "head," "origin," "great." This is why Confucius says in explaining it: "Great indeed is the generating power of the Creative; all beings owe their beginning to it. This power permeates all heaven." For this attribute inheres in the other three as well. The beginning of all things lies still in the beyond in the form of ideas that have yet to become real. But the Creative furthermore has power to lend form to these archetypes of ideas. This is indicated in the word success, and the process is represented by an image from nature: "The clouds pass and the rain does its work, and all individual beings flow into their forms." Applies to the human world, these attributes show the great man the way to notable success: "Because he sees with great clarity and cause and effects, he completes the six steps at the right time and mounts toward heaven on them at the right time, as though on six dragons." The six steps are the six different positions given in the hexagram, which are represented later by the dragon symbol. Here it is shown that the way to success lies in apprehending and giving actuality to the way of the universe [Tao], which, as a law running through end and beginning, brings about all phenomena in time. Thus each step attained forthwith becomes a preparation for the next. Time is no longer a hindrance but the means of making actual what is potential. The act of creation having found expression in the two attributes sublimity and success, the work of conservation is shown to be a continuous actualization and differentiation of form. This is expressed in the two terms "furthering" (literally, "creating that which accords with the nature of a given being") and "persevering" (literally, "correct and firm"). "The course of the Creative alters and shapes beings until each attains its true, specific nature, then it keeps them in conformity with the Great Harmony. Thus does it show itself to further through perseverance." In relation to the human sphere, this shows how the great man brings peace and security to the world through his activity in creating order: "He towers high above the multitude of beings, and all lands are united in peace." Another line of speculation goes still further in separating the words "sublime," "success," "furthering," "perseverance," and parallels them with the four cardinal virtues in humanity. To sublimity, which, as the fundamental principle, embraces all the other attributes, it links love. To the attribute success are linked the morals, which regulate and organize expressions of love and thereby make them successful. The attribute furthering is correlated with justice, which creates the conditions in which each receives that which accords with his being, that which is due him and which constitutes his happiness. The attribute perseverance is correlated with wisdom, which discerns the immutable laws of all that happens and can therefore bring about enduring conditions. These speculations, already broached in the commentary called Wên Yen , later formed the bridge connecting the philosophy of the "five stages (elements) of change," as laid down in the Book of History (Shu Ching) with the philosophy of the Book of Changes, which is based solely on the polarity of positive and negative principles. In the course of time this combination of the two systems of thought opened the way for an increasingly intricate number symbolism.

THE IMAGE

The movement of heaven is full of power.
Thus the superior man makes himself strong and
untiring.

Since there is only one heaven, the doubling of the trigram Ch'ien, of which heaven is the image, indicates the movement of heaven. One complete revolution of heaven makes a day, and the repetition of the trigram means that each day is followed by another. This creates the idea of time. Since it is the same heaven moving with untiring power, there is also created the idea of duration both in and beyond time, a movement that never stops nor slackens, just as one day follows another in an unending course. This duration in time is the image of the power inherent in the Creative. With this image as a model, the sage learns how best to develop himself so that his influence may endure. He must make himself strong in every way, by consciously casting out all that is inferior and degrading. Thus he attains that tirelessness which depends upon consciously limiting the fields of his activity.

THE LINES

Nine at the beginning means:
Hidden dragon. Do not act.

In China the dragon has a meaning altogether different from that given it in the Western world. The dragon is a symbol of the electrically charged, dynamic, arousing force that manifests itself in the thunderstorm. In winter this energy withdraws into the earth; in the early summer it becomes active again, appearing in the sky as thunder and lightning. As a result the creative forces on earth begin to stir again. Here this creative force is still hidden beneath the earth and therefore has no effect. In terms of human affairs, this symbolizes a great man who is still unrecognized. Nonetheless he remains true to himself. He does not allow himself to be influenced by outward success or failure, but confident in his strength, he bides his time. Hence it is wise for the man who consults the oracle and draws this line to wait in the calm strength of patience. The time will fulfill itself. One need not fear least strong will should not prevail; the main thing is not to expend one's powers prematurely in an attempt to obtain by force something for which the time is not yet ripe.

Nine in the second place means:
Dragon appearing in the field.
It furthers one to see the great man.

Here the effects of the light-giving power begin to manifest themselves. In terms of human affairs, this means that the great man makes his appearance in his chosen field of activity. As yet he has no commanding position but is still with his peers. However, what distinguishes him form the others is his seriousness of purpose, his unqualified reliability, and the influence he exerts on his environment with out conscious effort. Such a man is destined to gain great influence and to set the world in order. Therefore it is favorable to see him.

Nine in the third place means:
All day long the superior man is creatively active.
At nightfall his mind is still beset with cares.
Danger. No blame.

A sphere of influence opens up for the great man. His fame begins to spread. The masses flock to him. His inner power is adequate to the increased outer activity. There are all sorts of things to be done, and when others are at rest in the evening, plans and anxieties press in upon him. But danger lurks here at the place of transition from lowliness to the heights. Many a great man has been ruined because the masses flocked to him and swept him into their course. Ambition has destroyed his integrity. However, true greatness is not impaired by temptations. He who remains in touch with the time that is dawning, and with its demands is prudent enough to avoid all pitfalls, and remains blameless.

Nine in the fourth place means:
Wavering flight over the depths.
No blame.

A place of transition has been reached, and free choice can enter in. A twofold possibility is presented to the great man: he can soar to the heights and play an important part in the world, or he can withdraw into solitude and develop himself. He can go the way of the hero or that of the holy sage who seeks seclusion. There is no general law of his being. If the individual acts consistently and is true to himself, he will find the way that is appropriate for him. This way is right for him and without blame.

°Nine in the fifth place means:
Flying dragon in the heavens.
It furthers one to see the great man.

Here the great man has attained the sphere of the heavenly beings. His influence spreads and becomes visible throughout the whole world. Everyone who sees him may count himself blessed. Confucius says about this line:

Things that accord in tone vibrate together. Things that have affinity in their inmost natures seek one another. Water flows to what is wet, fire turns to what is dry. Clouds (the breath of heaven) follow the dragon, wind (the breath of earth) follows the tiger. Thus the sage arises, and all creatures follow him with their eyes. What is born of heaven feels related to what is above. What is born of earth feels related to what is below. Each follows its kind.

Nine at the top means:
Arrogant dragon will have cause to repent.

When a man seeks to climb so high that he loses touch with the rest of mankind, he becomes isolated, and this necessarily leads to failure. This line warns against titanic aspirations that exceed one's power. A precipitous fall would follow.

When all the lines are nines, it means:

There appears a flight of dragons without heads.

Good fortune.

When all the lines are nines, it means that the whole hexagram is in motion and changes into the hexagram K'un, THE RECEPTIVE, whose character is devotion. The strength of the Creative and the mildness of the Receptive unite. Strength is indicated by the flight of dragons, mildness by the fact that their heads are hidden. This means that mildness in action joined to strength of decision brings good fortune.

**** **** **** ****

64. Wei Chi / Before Completion

above LI THE CLINGING, FLAME
below K'AN THE ABYSMAL, WATER

This hexagram indicates a time when the transition from disorder to order is not yet completed. The change is indeed prepared for, since all the lines in the upper trigram are in relation to those in the lower. However, they are not yet in their places. While the preceding hexagram offers an analogy to autumn, which forms the transition from summer to winter, this hexagram presents a parallel to spring, which leads out of winter's stagnation into the fruitful time of summer. With this hopeful outlook the Book of Changes come to its close.

THE JUDGMENT

BEFORE COMPLETION. Success.
But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing,
Gets his tail in the water,
There is nothing that would further.

The conditions are difficult. The task is great and full of responsibility. It is nothing less than that of leading the world out of confusion back to order. But it is a task that promises success, because there is a goal that can unite the forces now tending in different directions. At first, however, one must move warily, like an old fox walking over ice. The caution of a fox walking over ice is proverbial in China. His ears are constantly alert to the cracking of the ice, as he carefully and circumspectly searches out the safest spots. A young fox who as yet has not acquired this caution goes ahead boldly, and it may happen that he falls in and gets his tail wet when he is almost across the water. Then of course his effort has been all in vain. Accordingly, in times "before completion," deliberation and caution are the prerequisites of success.

THE IMAGE

Fire over water:
The image of the condition before transition.
Thus the superior man is careful In the differentiation of things,
So that each finds its place.

When fire, which by nature flames upward, is above, and water, which flows downward, is below, their effects take opposite directions and remain unrelated. If we wish to achieve an effect, we must first investigate the nature of the forces in question and ascertain their proper place. If we can bring these forces to bear in the right place, they will have the desired effect and completion will be achieved. But in order to handle external forces properly, we must above all arrive at the correct standpoint ourselves, for only from this vantage can we work correctly.

THE LINES

Six at the beginning means:
He gets his tail in the water.
Humiliating.

In times of disorder there is a temptation to advance oneself as rapidly as possible in order to accomplish something tangible. But this enthusiasm leads only to failure and humiliation if the time for achievement has not yet arrived. In such time it is wise to spare ourselves the opprobrium of failure by holding back.

Nine in the second place means:
He brakes his wheels.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

Here again the time to act has not yet come. But the patience needed is not that of idle waiting without thought of the morrow. Kept up indefinitely, this would not lead to any success. Instead, an individual must develop in himself the strength that will enable him to go forward. He must have a vehicle, as it were, to effect the crossing. But he must for the time being use the brakes. Patience in the highest sense means putting brakes on strength. Therefore he must not fall asleep and lose sight of the goal. If he remains strong and steadfast in his resolve, all goes well in the end.

Six in the third place means:
Before completion, attack brings misfortune.
It furthers one to cross the great water.

The time of transition has arrived, but one lacks the strength to complete the transition. If one should attempt to force it, disaster would result, because collapse would then be unavoidable. What is to be done? A new situation must be created; one must engage the energies of able helpers and in this fellowship take the decisive step-cross the great water. Then completion will become possible.

Nine in the fourth place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Remorse disappears.
Shock, thus to discipline the
Devil's Country.
For three years, great realms are rewarded.

Now it is the time of struggle. The transition must be completed. We must make ourselves strong in resolution; this brings good fortune. All misgivings that might arise in such grave times of struggle must be silenced. It is a question of a fierce battle to break and to discipline the Devil's Country, the forces of decadence. But the struggle also has its reward. Now is the time to lay the foundations of power and mastery for the future.

° Six in the fifth place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
No remorse.
The light of the superior man is true.
Good fortune.

The victory has been won. The power of steadfastness has not been routed. Everything has gone well. All misgivings have been overcome. Success has justified the deed. The light of a superior personality shines forth anew and makes its influence felt among men who have faith in it and rally around it. The new time has arrived, and with it good fortune. And just as the sun shines forth in redoubled beauty after rain, or as a forest grows more freshly green from charred ruins after a fire, so the new era appears all the more glorious by contrast with the misery of the old.

Nine at the top means:
There is drinking of wine
In genuine confidence. No blame.
But if one wets his head,
He loses it, in truth.

Before completion, at the dawning of the new time, friends foregather in an atmosphere of mutual trust, and the time of waiting is passed in conviviality. Since the new era is hard on the threshold, there is no blame in this. But one must be careful in all this to keep within proper bounds. If in his exuberance a man gets drunk, he forfeits the favorableness of the situation through his intemperance. index

The Dhammapada starts off in the same way as we Zoroastrians have said before him, Good Thoughts, Good Words Good Deeds.  But it does not predict.  If he did that today, he would be accused of plagiarism.  And so would a lot other "religious" people.

Souri joon:  Love is

by n.zanincanadai on

Souri joon:

Love is like a butterfly, the more you chase it the more it flies away and  it will be back in your hand at the very moment you don't expect it

What does that even mean? I've never seen a butterfly in a hand. Except in Nazi Kaviani's icon. So I'm assuming it happens VERY VERY rarely. Then, does your saying mean that love happens just as rarely? If so...then what hope are you giving to JJJ?

I disagree. Love, whatever it is, can be found in many places. One has to be out there actively searching. Of course, I don't mean being desperate and forcing love. But mathematically speaking, if JJJ meets 10 women, he has more of a chance of finding love then if he meets 1 woman. He can bet on that 1 woman being the butterfly you talk of. But I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket that way. But hey...that's just me :)

I what?

by Mersedeh on

This is quite a deviation from the norm for you my friend....I can't believe you would actually put this much time into 'reading' and 'concentrating' on "I Ching - Chinese Faal"!!!  hmmm....!?!?

If you got something out of all this then power to you, but something tells me that deep down you already have all the answers,... maybe you're just bored with them? Or maybe you're just looking for new questions? New inspiration?

or,,,,Maybe you like solving chinese mystery puzzles???  :)  Maybe you can become an I Ching Master and read mine next time I see you!  :)

Souri

Hello N.zanin jan

by Souri on

This is funny we still keep talking about that ! It became more our own subject that JJ's ! He probably forgot all  about this, and we are still talking and talking..about his love . What I had to say about dating, is that old saying " Love is like a butterfly, the more you chase it the more it flies away and  it will be back in your hand at the very moment you don't expect it"....anyway, something like this. That's why I said, going out and trying to date and find a mate, don't help that much, but I do agree with you that sitting at home won't help it neither. Returning back to our dear JJ, I believe Ali Mostofi has exactly point out JJ's problem. JJ has an unfinished business which still bother him. He has to try to get rid of that. Let's pray for him

n.zanincanadai

Souri joon: Well if we're

by n.zanincanadai on

Souri joon:

Well if we're talking about love, mating and dating have to be mentioned. How can one find love if one doesn't mingle with the jingles (i.e. the khoshgel khanums)?

I was just saying that if a person wants to find love, the person has to be "out there". Meeting people. At some point, the hope is that we find the person we are compatible with and we fall in love (I personally don't beleive in that kind of love, but I'm humouring the subject).

Maternal or brotherly love is a whole different game.

Toreng:

I'm not sure how old you are. And I didn't say JJJ was old. I'm saying "he" (even "us") isn't getting any younger. To deny that is to ignore reality. A 20 year old has, let's say 60 years to find love. A 75 year old...probably doesn't have 60 years. So depending on how old we are, we HAVE to be realistic about the dwindling sea of opportunity.

But this isn't necessarily a negative thing. It's good in a sense. Because someone JJJ's age probably knows what she wants. So the search is more focused :)

Yes

by alimostofi on

JJ, yes 1, and 64 are correct.  I know I-Ching.  What this means is very simple.  Out with the old, and in with the new.  And it fits with what this year will be for Iran.  It will be the final year, and the preparation for the new Iran.  You need to be aware of this, as you have taken the ownership of a very importance mouth-piece of Iran.

We were talking "love"...not dating and finding a mate, koshgel khanom. I'm sure if JJ wanted just a mate, he could find it easily (who can't nowadays?) but he is talking about a deep feeling, even a painful feeling. So, what you can do for that ? Could you tell us ? by n.zanincanadai on

Akheh ghorboonet beram in kara chieh???? You want a faal, why didn't you ask me. Throw all this out and here is your straight forward fall.

- You're not so young anymore. If you want to find love, you better get to work fast. Be visible so people know you are looking. Go out, increase your mating opportunities. Be open, friendly and not scared.

- Be happy. No one falls in love with unhappy people. So give your happy aura out. If you don't have enough of it, you have to get some...quickly. Exercise. Pick a hobby. Get yourself laughing. Chicks dig that a lot.

- Pain main chieh? What ever was, has been. Only the future counts. Don't look back.

- DATE DATE DATE DATE every night. Twice a day. Different people. As many people as you find interesting. Don't waste time with people you don't enjoy...remember, "you not so young anymore" (say that with a chinese accent!)

- But most importantly: share all the details with us with blogs.

Now bend down 3 times towards ghebleh and say wuhahahahahah. This faal is guaranteed to be accurate.

:)

Baa Ejaazeh Agha-JJ,

When it come to love you fall in love quickly, thus the number 9. Then you fall back and lose interest, thus the number 7. I-Ching is telling you that in the realm of love you take two steps forward and then two steps back. Wolek, start low and then take it high!

Vally of Love!!

by Tahirih on

The steed of this Valley is pain; and if there be no pain this journey will never end. In this station the lover hath no thought save the Beloved, and seeketh no refuge save the Friend.   At every moment he offereth a hundred lives in the path of the Loved One, at every step he throweth a thousand heads at the feet of the Beloved. Love accepteth no existence and wisheth no life: He seeth life in death, and in shame seeketh glory. To merit the madness of love, man must abound in sanity; to merit the bonds of the Friend, he must be full of spirit. Blessed the neck that is caught in His noose, happy the head that falleth on the dust in the pathway of His love.  I think this is the ultimet ,and this is 97 97 97  :0)) Respectfully, Tahirih .
