Our tech guru Foaad has created a special page for online polls. He has twice reminded me to use it for selecting the Iranian of the year for 2008. So before it gets too late, I want to share some names with you.
I think the 2008 Iranian of the year should include the following. Note that these are SIGNIFICANT Iranians, NOT necessarily the BEST. I'm sure I've missed some important names, so help me out:
-- Shirin Ebadi
-- Students who've demanded freedom and democracy in public rallies at numerous universities.
-- The One Million Signatures Campaign (women's rights activists in Iran)
-- Marjane Satrapi
-- Mohsen Namjoo
-- Hossein Derakhshan
-- Six detained leaders of the Bahai faith.
-- Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Who did I miss? Let me know and I will set up the poll. HERE IT IS.

AI: Who, when, what, where, why and how
by Yachov on Tue Jan 20, 2009 09:31 PM PSTI was rehearsing the role of Moshiach ben David to see if it would fit. LOL I had several successful years in a rock band which disbanded and in the summer of 1978 decided to do a "walkabout" in the Middle East to "feel" my roots. I was in Israel and I walked across the border into Southern Lebanon. There I met Nasrallah. Don't ask the name of my rock band because that would disclose my ID. :) He was polite but cautious at first. The more we talked the more I realized that he was just like me only he climbed a different branch of the family tree. :)
Yachov & Nasrallah
by Artificial Intelligence on Tue Jan 20, 2009 08:52 PM PSTCan you tell us more about this Nasrallah encounter? Sounds very interesting. What were you doing in Lebanon on foot 30 years ago? Sounds like around 1978 or something during the first Israeli invasion.
No, it's not too late
by Bahramg08 (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 08:30 PM PSTJahanshah jaan,
This is a great idea, "the person (s) of the year." Why don't we do it for the forthcoming new year? Our New Year, Naw-Ruz. And do so every year at Naw-Ruz time.
Best regards,

by Yachov on Tue Jan 20, 2009 08:41 PM PSTI met Hassan Nasrallah many years ago when I was traveling afoot in Lebanon. I saw him as a man who seeks to correct injustice. He was young and I was young. If he remembers he will tell you that we talked of compassion as the essence of human understanding. We talked for some time about the writings of Khalil Gibran whom I believe he considered an apostate albiet an interesting one. Despite the fact that I was a Jew and could have taken his life at any moment he seemed comfortable with me. If you see him, or if you are him, remind him of the one who said he will never see his greatest truth until he crucifies his hate and learns to love his brother the son of Yachov. Until then he will not see the love of his brother. He will remember even if he doesn't completely remember. He was probably about 17 at the time. :)

Makwan Moloudzadeh
by DW Duke on Tue Jan 20, 2009 07:29 PM PSTI don't know if deceased Iranians are eligible to be Iranian of the year but if so then I would nominate Makwan Moloudzadeh. You may recall in that 2007 he was executed for smoking on Ramadan. It is a little more complex than that but in essence that is what the case reduced to. He was arrested for smoking on Ramadan then the abuse began. He was forced to ride naked on a donkey through the town and humiliated in many other ways. During his abuse, some of his school friends said that he raped them when they were 13 years of age. They later recanted their story. The judge, relying upon elm-e qazi, the "knowledge of the judge" concluded that the original story of the boys was true even though it was recanted. On that basis, the boy was executed. Even under Shariah, elm-e qazi, is not to be used in a capital case. The alleged act upon which his execution was based occurred when he was only 13 years of age. He was 20 at the time of his execution.
Seconded
by Pahlevan on Tue Jan 20, 2009 07:00 PM PSTYes, Ehsan Yarshater, a great Iranian indeed.
Hadi Saei is a good one too, and maybe Nekounam he recently scored against Real Madrid with a header over an Italian defender who is supposedly best in the world.
Iranian of the year
by Gougouli (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 06:43 PM PSTLooking at the proposals on this site, one would think that there are no Iranians other than in Iran and the United States, nor any Iranians doing wonderful work to preserve and make known Iranian history, culture and art worldwide. It says a lot about the narrow horizon of bloggers on this site.
Why not, for starters, name a great Iranian scholar in the US who has done the greatest service to our Persian culture, namely Professor Ehsan Yarshater, the founder and indefatigable fundraiser of the Encyclopaedia Iranica, and who, even with failing health, has barely reduced his workload and his dedication to a great cause.
addition (and deletion?)
by Pahlevan on Tue Jan 20, 2009 06:42 PM PSTShirin Ebadi, Nazanin Afshin Jam, Bahram Moshiri and Ahmad Batebi have to be in the list for sure as mentioned by others.
I also suggest Akbar Ganji, Ebrahim Nabavi and Khosro Shakibaee (who passed away on July 18th 08) to be added to the list.
And please man, what is up with putting Hossein Derakhshan in the list, anybody who knows him, and not many do, hates this guy, he is unpopular and insignificant.

Nomination of Tara
by Yachov on Tue Jan 20, 2009 08:18 AM PSTI nominate Tara for her high scholastic contributions and her acute objectivity that would prevent her from ever imputing false statements or idealogies to another, that she would never seek to penalize someone based upon a belief that this person may hold a viewpoint different from hers, or that this person may have acted in a manner that she personally felt lacked diligence, that she would recognize that perhaps her own frame of reference is finite and she might not have knowledge of all of the intricate variables that would cause a person to do or not do something she believes this person should do, for her keen analysis of facts such that she recognizes merit even in opposing viewpoints and that she is the actualization of the famous words by the German philospher/historian George Frederick Hegel:
"When a man has finally reached the point where he does not think he knows it better than others, that is when he has become indifferent to what others have done badly and is interested only in what they have done right, then peace and affirmation have come to him."
But most importantly that she would never allow petty jealously and Barbie Doll idealogies to influence her actions in any respect as it pertains to another. On these bases and these bases alone, I nominate Tara.

we don't even know their names! so they deserve recognition more than anyone: one, they showed so much courage. two, they voice our of all discontentment at the regime. three, since we do not even know their names they need even more urgently a gesture of recognition. I remember their faces. the guy with from polytechnique with the big glasses and the beard holding a sign saying: rais jomhooreh fascist polytechnic jaay to neest.
or the guy in shiraza getting up and lynching ahmadinejad and parliament in front of larijani. these guys need to be recognized and applauded.

Questions for Tara
by SCE supporter (not verified) on Tue Jan 20, 2009 02:07 AM PSTI am not suggesting Afshin-Jam or anyone specific as iranian of the year but your logics have no merits:
> If a "supposed supporter" of shirin ebadi supports Israel, does that make shirin ebadi a bad candidate??
> Can you show us "SEVERAL" "OBVIOUS" quotes of "several of SCE's supposed supporters on this site have obviously taken stands in support of Israel's actions"?
> Don't you think by making such UNSUBSTANTIATED COMMENTS AND ACCUSATIONS you actually are helping IR and hurting the cause of tens of thousands of people in the world who are trying to Stop Child Executions in Iran and worldwide under the SCE umbrella?
Thank you
by amirkabear4u on Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:27 AM PSTMr J for giving us the choice.
I think some one who dedicated his/her life to help Iranian children is appropriate. I do not know any one but maybe you do.
