I know, I know. Worse things happen in our own Islamic Republic. But this story bugged the hell out of me.
Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the brother of the UAE president, has been declared innocent of charges that he repeatedly beat a business associate and ran him over with a car. See video below:
It is not unusual for rich, influential people get away with atrocities or corruption. It happens a lot in almost every country. But here's the difference: It happens a lot less in democratic countries with an independent judiciary.
The UAE has spent a fortune trying to become a modern center of commerce. But you cannot just look modern and hide your lack of democratic principles behind a strip of skyscrapers.
Who cares about the world's tallest building in Dubai if the country does not have a free press, if people don't enjoy most basic rights, if the government is based on an ancient tribal system, where those with ties to the royal family get away with such heinous crimes? Even when the whole world has watched it on YouTube?
Money does not buy civility. Dubai and the rest the UAE will remain in the dark ages as long as long as their rulers continue to run their country like an exclusive boys club.
And before I forget, please don't start any racist discussions. Authoritarian regimes come in all colors.

Shaikh Issa was acquitted because of temp. insanity
by MM on Mon Jan 11, 2010 12:34 AM PSTStory is partly taken from Guardian
"Issa's lawyer, Habib al-Mulla, today said his client had been found not guilty of charges including rape and assault after it was argued he acted under the influence of medication and had been drugged. "The fact that this trial is taking place is a sign that the UAE is showing that everyone in this country can be put in front of the law and judged," Mulla insisted.
The defense claimed Issa was had taken a combination of drugs, including medicines for heart and back conditions, which a forensics expert testified could cause "anger, suicidal tendencies, depression, aggression and loss of memory".
Had he been found guilty on all charges, Issa faced three years at most in prison.
The presiding judge, Mubarak Awad, gave no explanation for the ruling, other than referring to "diminished liability" on the sheikh's part."
Absolute power corrupts absolutely
by MM on Sun Jan 10, 2010 10:52 PM PSTDisgusting, no matter where it happens.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely
As stated in the house of Lords by Lord Acton, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 1887:
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
Similarly, William Pitt the Elder's speech in the House of Lords in 1770:
"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it; and this I know, my lords, that where laws end, tyranny begins."
Words of wisdom, proven true for more than 200 years.
Mr. Javid, a sincere hypocrite???
by rpRoshan on Mon Jan 11, 2010 01:55 PM PSTMr. Javid writes, "I know, I know. Worse things happen in our own Islamic Republic."
Yes, they clearly do, Mr. Javid, and if there ever was a person who would know that "worse things happen in our own Islamic Republic," it would be you, Sir, would it not? Correct me if I'm wrong, but admitteldy, you were intimately affiliated with the IRI until the mid 1990's.
Most decent, honorable and consciencious people would have been revolted by the IRI as early as the summer of 1979 -- and a great many original supporters were, to be sure -- when the Hezbollahi Nazis began to eat their own by the thousands with unparalled viciousness, not to mention of unspeakable torture that would put this video to shame, not to mention the horrors of the summer of 1988, not to mention sending 10-year old boys to the front lines of the Iran/Iraq war to walk on mines.
You were an associate of the criminal IRI during this extremely dark passage in Iranian history, Mr. Javid, which would make you potentially criminally culpable, if not in a court of law, in a higher court of justice in front of your maker. So, please, do us all a favor and spare us your heart-felt indignations over this shameful video.
During the time that you were associated with the IRI, virgin girls were routinely gang raped in IRI prisions the night before their executions, after which their parents would receive a box of sweets with a note telling them that their daughter was married the night before and executed the morning after, along with a request for payment of the bullets used to kill their daughter, or else they would never know where she was buried.
This was the very SADISTIC regime that you, Mr. Javid, as a very mature man, colluded and associated with for over a decade. You knowingly hid your head in the sand while THOUSANDS of innocent Iranians were brutally tortured FAR WORSE than the man in this video by the very same regime YOU sincerely aided and abetted for far, FAR too long! And now, this bit of heinous UAE footage "bugged the hell out of" you! How comforting to know that you have changed so much, Sir.
hamsade, don't put words in my mouth
by mannya2001 on Sun Jan 10, 2010 06:38 PM PSTplease don't be judgemental.
i didn't praise this act and i condemn rulers that waste people's wealth.
Do I feel sorry for this particular victim? i don't know. I need to see what he did. Maybe he thought he could steal from the prince and assumed these arabs are always stupid and drunk. Only to be taught a lesson not to try and steal. I don't know the case.
But in ME, there are many sharks, there are many folks just waiting for your to blink and jump you. So if you hold trust in a person and you learn he's cheating you, believe me, not even Mohammad Ali can stand up to your rage!!!
not any better
by hamsade ghadimi on Sun Jan 10, 2010 05:49 PM PSTpeople like mannya who sees this tape and still praises the arabs for their generosity are not any better than the ones we saw in the tape torturing this poor soul. these are the type of people beating, torturing and killing our people in iran. people with no conscious. breakfast, lunch and dinner for fifty bucks, that's all he thought about after seeing this video.
cost of progress, you're right. reform for these people means no videotaping next time.
Absolute power
by pedro on Sun Jan 10, 2010 05:32 PM PSTHere we go again, Another Islamic kindness. Absolute power brings corroption, tortures, dismembers, kills, rapes. now put that in the hands of an Arab, and then he thinks he is god. people in UAE should take the power away from the sheikh, and fight for democracy
Shame on you filthy Arab sheikh. For 5k you do this? What is 5k in compair to billions of dollars in your bank account.
David ET, I can't disagree more
by mannya2001 on Sun Jan 10, 2010 05:28 PM PSTCom'on this case and the case you put the link are way different.
One case has to do with abuse of power by rulers, another is cultural insensitivity by local population
If you don't then you should know that a Muslim woman in a Muslim country gets drunk to the point of unconsciousness and for her to be admitting to premarital sex, would automatically make Muslim men in Muslim countries think that she is a wh_ _ _ and maybe just maybe they can get a piece too.
This is pervasive thinking in Muslim countries. It is like having a Porn Star in the West. Everyone thinks that for the right amount of money she would sell her body. GET IT???
And Yes her rape would be seen as something "justified" or atleast the punishment would be something like 6 months in jail

by David ET on Sun Jan 10, 2010 04:51 PM PSTThere is no difference between violation of human rights between Bin Ladin and sheiks likes this who rule Saudi Arabia, Dubai etc.
Except that you fight one and kiss the hands of the other.
It has always been about money and oil and human rights has been nothing but PR as far as US and West is considered
Here is another sick example :

This is sick...
by Princess on Sun Jan 10, 2010 03:12 PM PSTSICK... no other way to describe this.
The fact that the UAE has an extremely racist society is a well-known and well-documented fact. In that country you don't have to be a Sheikh to abuse other people. Modern-day slavery is very prevalent there. I sometimes wish money could also buy some humanity.
Be generous & God gives
by mannya2001 on Sun Jan 10, 2010 03:07 PM PSTOne thing about Persian Gulf Arabs, whether Saudis, UAE or Kuwaits, is that they might not tolerate freedom but they are overall generous.
You go to a restaurant, the best food for very cheap. You get invited to their houses, very generous too. They have atleast permitted foreigners like Lebanese, Iranians & Egyptians to make fortunes of off contracts in their countries.
Yes, they have no freedom for press freedom, but they are generous and are NOT HASOOD. They believe if you are to be rich, its because of GOD.
In Iran & West, there is so much Ketab- Hesab, taxes, pedare businessa dar miyarand. And in Iran & West, unfortunately, they are cheap. Especially when it comes to hoteling, hospitality.
You go to a hotel in Qatar, you think you are in Heavan for $ 50- nice breakfast, lunch and dinner. In Iran & west, the hotel tries to such out every last penny out of you and gives you poor service.
My grand father was right, GOD GIVES those who are Generous (dasteshoon baze)
I posted this video a long time ago and it was deleted ...
by Darius Kadivar on Sun Jan 10, 2010 03:07 PM PSTDunno why ? ... ;0)
I think it was sometime last year but don't remember when. I even put a WARNING Sign to remind adults that it was Very Shocking for young viewers visiting the site ...
Probably because it was very graphic and shocking ...
In Anycase Thanks for reminding us of this horrible treatment and that it is shameful that this SOB Prince got away with it.
I just wonder if their was a Revolution in Dubai and Some Saddam Wannabe would take over by establishing a Republic if things would be different.
What lacks in the entire region and regardless of the political systems in place is democracy and democratic faith which can only take shape in the minds and hearts of people through education.
It is certainly one of the great challenges of this century for all developing countries and particularly in this region.
When I see that there are still people rallying in support for the Regime in Iran despite all the horrors and seeing that State Tv claims that Neda Commited Suicide in order to distract people from the real issue that our society is ill because superstition and lack of genuine democracy has frustrated people and leading them to protest, I tend to think that even if we end up by having a democracy, we will still have to confront such obsolete mindsets in our country and amongst our own people.
It will take time and a lot of commitment by all to acquire a stable democratic society anywhere in this region and in our very own country, But Democracy is the Only possible path if we want to get out of the Middle Ages once and for all.
This video makes me think that little has changed since the Middle Ages and the Crusades in the Middle East.
Truly Shameful and disgusting ...
I know of many Arabs feeling
by benross on Sun Jan 10, 2010 02:33 PM PSTI know of many Arabs feeling the same way as we do, watching this kind of sadly not surprising behaviour. So this is not a racial issue at all. But it is a cultural issue, promoted in Iran for 30 years. This is what we are about to deal with it, this time for good.
yeah what a shame......
by maziar 58 on Sun Jan 10, 2010 02:26 PM PSTnot being racist BUT ARAB rullers are something else.......
