Whistling with joy

And that's why I have to go back
to so many places in the future,
there to find myself
and constantly examine myself
with no witness but the moon
and then whistle with joy,
ambling over rocks and clods of earth,
with no task but to live,
with no family but the road.
-- Pablo Neruda

I waited and waited and I finally did it. I bought my ticket to South America yesterday: Washington DC to Santiago, Chile. It turned out incredibly cheap too: $352 one way. It seemed like pure luck because every other price I saw online was at least double (and even that would have been worth it).

It's been a dream of mine to go to South America. It's still a dream. I have no firm idea what the region looks like. It was only yesterday when I actually saw Santiago on the map. Not a big deal. These days you don't need much information in your head about anywhere you want to go. Just google it and get up and go. As long as I have a room with internet access, I'm all set. I will go on CraigsList in the coming days and find a place. I saw an ad there a few days ago for a room in a central location for around $300 a month.

It's the way to live my friends. Have a job that allows you to work on your computer and you'll be free to be anywhere in the world. Can you do it? Why not? Do it! What are you waiting for? Leave your desk, get out of the office, get off the highway... see the world before it sees you off :)

Well, from the face of it lots of our IC bloggers are capable of living life JJ style. After all they are 24/7 online chatting! :-) They might as well chat in santiago! :-)

But JJ jaan do us a favor and before taking off unblock the SAMSAM and JIMJIM and JDAM and anyone else you have been planning to block for last few weeks! Plzzzz :-)

I am sure you would be reading two blogs a day from Fred over there! wink, wink :-)

I loved the poem you quoted on top. I'd only omit this line: "and constantly examine myself" :-)

best wishes for your trip. May be I catch you there...

Vildemost Jaan: considering ....

That we both are semi slave to the US corporation thru our jobs, I would think two weeks, not to mention running the chance of being disowned by my dad for not visiting Iran instead.

The objective beside having a vacation is really to get to know the local culture/area a bit closer.  I have never been to SA and always wanted to go.  I am easy regarding accommodation but my wife prefers a bit more… nothing fancy but clean and safe are required.
We both like non-touristy places where we can mingle more with the local folks/culture as oppose to the one that caters to the Westerners.  I LOVE the mountains and enjoy nature far more then cities but I got strike a right balance for my wife as well.

Anyway, any and all info would be appreciate it in advance.

P.S. Normally I travelled with no plans and sort it out when I got to my destination but things have changed 

Didn't you do this in Budapest?

by mrlayl on

That must've been a good experience. I took my first trip to South America last February. We went to Buenos Aires for a week.

I'm sure Santiago and the rest of Chile might be different. But, in BA effects of Argentine credit default 10 years earlier were still visible (hint to Greeks).

In BA, walking on the side walks in the downtown area you had to keep looking down so you wouldn't trip on fall or step into dog doodoo. Or had to look up so that condensate drippings from window units won't land on your head. Depending on how long you saty, it may not get hot enough before you leave.

Good luck and have fun.

Vildemost Jaan: My wife and I are planning on visiting Peru

by Bavafa on

This winter and would appreciate any inside as what to see/where to go.  If you have visited before or have recommendation, I would appreciate it either here or via e-mail which ever is easier for you.

As a guide, I am much more interested in non-tourist type area but my wife cares about the cleanness of the hotels & safety in general.

JJJ the thrill of world expeditions is not enough and you want to jump in and walk around the world?!  Who knows perhaps that guy becomes dinner for some black bear somewhere!

I meant "100% walking" and it can get boring.  Whenever I leave the US and go to Iran or elsewhere I sure can use a bicycle.  Not necessarily a car (traffic and not knowing around) but a bicycle to get around.

While walking is nice, it can get old and my foot starts to give up before I do.

BTW have you heard of Daniel Seddigui who sound Iranian and has held a job in all 50 states?

Walking!

by Jahanshah Javid on

Yes... it would be great to walk from one town to the next. See this:
//imjustwalkin.com/details/#route_and_timelin...

It would be possible once you can easily connect to the internet no matter where you are. We're getting there.

Esfand Aashena

Bicycles, horses, anything but 100% walking!

by Esfand Aashena on

Oh I can imagine you getting sick and tired of walking all the time in your world expeditions?!  And carry a bag pack too!  Is that a con vs many other pros of this way of life?

Scooters work, just don't stay out too late at night.  You may have heard about the recent accident in Rockville, MD.

The driver of the scooter, Roberto Nassar, 30, of Rockville, was traveling northbound on Rockville Pike (Route 355) shortly before 1:30 a.m., police spokesman Captain Paul Starks said. He stopped at a red light at Edmonston Drive then, as the traffic light turned green, he was struck from behind by a car.

The rear of the scooter became lodged in the car, Starks said. Nassar was thrown off, but the car continued to drag the scooter for nearly one mile up Rockville Pike, to Viers Mill Road (Route 28), before the driver was finally stopped by police.

Esfand, I've seen "Motorcycle Diaries"... great film. I would go on a motorcycle tour too, if it was a tricycle:

I can't handle any motorcycle heavier than a moped :)

Motorcylce Diaries.

JJJ there are jobs that allow you to work from home or Skype and such, but not 24/7 like you! And besides those jobs are not available to everyone and furthermore, you need to be a hippie to enjoy life like yourself!

Sure you work more than 40 hrs/week and comparable jobs "pay" more but personally I'd take it!  Although, I don't want to give up my family for it.  Anyway, it's a never ending debate but I encourage all single i.com friends to take up your offer and start living on the cheap but live large by seeing the world on worldwide expeditions!  Faramarz jaan are you listening?!

Lastly, if you're going to that part of the world try and see Motorcycle Diaries.  You can rent it on Netflix or Blockbuster or online or something, maybe even some showtimes in DC area.  It won an Oscar.

Wine is big in Chile, maybe you can get a part time job at a winery!  Crushing grapes with your feet!

job & expenses

by Jahanshah Javid on

This IS my job Esfand. And I work seven days a week, and more than 8 hours a day. This website does not pay any of my expenses, let alone travel. It pays my salary, which is a lot less than the average earnings of the average Iranian abroad. So don't give me excuses :)

There are more and more jobs out there that allow you to work outside the office on your computer. If there needs to be a meeting you connect via Skype.

Esfand Aashena

Good luck!

by Esfand Aashena on

$352 doesn't sound "cheap" but I guess going all the way down to Chile for $352 isn't that much.

Well as far as your question well we need money to survive and we all don't have a website that pays our expenses!

I suggest in one of your expeditions, perhaps this one, get a job and blog and send photos about that too. Perhaps geta job in a farm and send us pictures of milking cows or something!  Any job will do, bagging groceries, selling candies on street corner, maybe grilled corns or pecans or hot beets or whatever!

If you're that free to travel the world why not try and do what others do for living, albeit for a short while.

Everything is sacred
