کاتوزيان: بريتانيا نقشی در برآمدن رضاشاه نداشت

An interview with Oxford Scholar, Professor Homayoun Katouzian, provides a challenge to the notion that the British helped prop Reza Shah to power and helped remove Ahmad Shah from office (report from Rouznamak Blog):

کودتای سوم اسفند 1299 خورشيدی که به روی کار آمدن دولت سيدضياء الدين طباطبائی و سپس رضاخان و در نهايت سقوط قاجاريه انجاميد، در شرائطی رخ داد که ايران سالها بود در بی نظمی و هرج و مرج به سر می برد.

I agree with you. My comments were based on hindsight while Reza Shah's decisions were based on foresight.

No matter what, Reza Shah is the father of the new Iran. A lot of propaganda has been used against him, but even his opponents hold a respect for the man.

It is totally unimaginable for any of us (particularly those hardcore anti-pahlavi islamists/leftist) to understand how backward and broken iran was in 1921. Please listen to the audio in the referenced web site. Considering that:

1. I do not think reza shah knew what nazi germany was about. Even germans did not know what nazis were doing (just like those 98% who voted for IRI). So he thought he was siding with those who would confront brits+russians who had strong foot-hold in iran. Reza shah's focus was to stop iran from disintegrating and preventing iran to become soviet satellite or brit's india.

2. I agree with you here (maybe). But once again, he thought that with a group of western educated leaders (in a neutral country like Switzerland, mosaddeq included), he could bring iran into modernity more rapidly. Unfortunately, he underestimated ferociousness of mullas and overestimated his son's abilities and dedication to changing of iran.

Remember, the poor guy only lived as a ruler for only 16 years, about half of IRI life so far, and still his foot prints are all over iran: iran's integrity, universities, banking system, railroad, modern army, modern navy, .... Does IRI have any positive foot-print to leave to the next generation after 30 years of rule? (except for sivand dam, unsuccessful freedom for qods, dedication of funds to people of lebanon, support for hamas, torture and execution of underage iranian boys and girls, ...)

I disliked Reza Shah when I

I disliked Reza Shah when I was younger. I was heavily influenced by the Islamist, leftist and Jebheye Melli propgandan and their false lies about this great man.

With time, I realized that I was duped. That he did a lot of good for his country, too many to count. However, I think he made two mistakes:

1. Going to war against the allies in WWII which cut short his leadership.

2. Sending his son to Switzerland for education. He should have kept his son in Iran. Maybe then MR Pahalvi would have known better how to deal with the beasts who are in power today.

Abarmard.... Kojaiee?

In a different article on the subject, iranian intellectuals on this site joined islamists and leftists to scream that reza shah's coming and going was ordered by brits and that was one reason to denounce a great man of iranian history and ignore all the good things that he did for the country. It appears that they once again have fallen into trap of islamists' propaganda.

Khomeini never fails to fool, even when he is dead!

And gullible people are never hard to find, even in educated in face of 30 years of disaster that has impacted millions of us.
