Hundreds dead or injured in Ghezel Hesar prison clashes, phones cut off

According to the HRANA group, at least 150 prisoners are dead or injured after bloody clashes erupted in Karaj’s Ghezel Hesar prison on the night of March 15th. Thousands of prisoners from units 2 and 3 launched a protest after hearing the news of plans to execute ten inmates.

During the protest approximately 3,000 prisoners attempted to break the doors of their cells while chanting, “Executions must stop.” Security forces attacked the prison cells, resulting in bloody clashes and the transfer of some prisoners from their cells. Reports indicate that prison guards used live ammunitions to control the protesters. Consequently, nearly eighty prisoners were seriously injured or killed, but the number of those shot is at 150 or higher. A handful of officers along with the deputy warden of the prison, Mr. Safakhil suffered leg injuries during the clashes. The prisoners who protested are either serving a heavy sentence or facing imminent execution.

The Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners reported on March 16th that some people attacked the prison from the outside in an attempt to free some of the detainees. According to these reports, some prisoners escaped. The news of the escapes has not been confirmed by other sources.

The latest news indicates that Ghezel Hesar prison is under lock down after riot police forces entered the grounds. On March 19th, the RAHANA group reported that phone privileges have been cut off for prisoners until further notice. Yesterday morning, some prisoners were able to make brief phone calls to their families, but by noon, all communication was cut off.

The Iranian regime’s Fars News Agency reported that after destructing the prison facilities, breaking windows, and attacking the guards, protesters attempted to escape the prison. The report did not mention the use of live ammunitions against the protesters, but did confirm the death of a few inmates as a result of “inflected injuries and smoke inhalation.”

On March 16th, the Reuters news agency reported 14 deaths and 33 injuries, citing Iranian state television as the source.

Re:How about a No-Fly Zone    ?

What is the problem here?
I guess you mean what is America's problem.

Is an Iranian life worth less than a libyan's? or is Iranian oil of better quality than Libyan oil? or is something going on behind the scenes? some form of a "blood for oil deal"...

Good questions and understandable.I think all your questions are right and wrong.

Is an Iranian life worth less than a libyan's?
Yes and No.
Yes The Regime and the Death to America crowd would be considered worth less.
No the sane Iranians are worth the same as the sane Libyans.

or is Iranian oil of better quality than Libyan oil? or is something going on behind the scenes? some form of a "blood for oil deal".

Yes because Oil is just part of the business which they monopolize together with the Arabs. But No,The public doesn't really care where it comes from.Except for U.S. environmentalist's and Democrats who only care if it comes from drilling it ourselves in the U.S.They have driven us over there for the Oil long before any wars.
Democrats Behind the scenes may have been something like 'Well the Oil is already shutoff in Libya theres nothing to lose now' k for days. And for days on the affect it would have on of what is left of their status quo.I think Gaddaffi ended the deliberation in Obama's mind and pushed him to having to make a decision.

//abcnews.go.com/International/libya-international-military-coalition-launch-assault-gadhafi-forces/story?id=13174246

"I want the American people to know that the use of force is not our first choice and it's not a choice I make lightly," Obama said. "But we cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people that there will be no mercy."

Obama should have said 'meaning Libya only' because 'standing idly by' is exactly what he has done. The real reason is because Libya looks to be a pushover already fallen half way down.It may appear to be a ledge he stepped out on,but really it isn't too far off the ground.

World media is focusing on Japan and Libya, so IRI pretty much can get away with murders.....it is very sad! This prison riot news made on an obscure Irish website:

//www.indymedia.ie/article/99294&user_frontpage=53&save_prefs=true

It is sad to picture that 150 inmates were massacred or injured in one day.......when will the inhumane treatment of Iranians by IRI get world's attention? Why are the Iranian lives so cheap?

Soosan Khanoom

We have a regime that does

by Soosan Khanoom on

We have a regime that does not need to hide any thing that it does ....  executing people is their God given right  ........

How can you fight with this ?   ........

A Regime with  too many brian washed supporters who are actually blind to these injustices ..........

 I have  a question:

Have the names of killed prisoners been released ?

SOS-FREE-IRAN

Is islamic regime's prisons similar to Bolshevik pogroms?

by SOS-FREE-IRAN on

yep. hangings, executions, arbitrary arrests, disappearances, etc...Islamic regime's modus of operation (M.0) is similar to the way the jews took their revenge of Czarist russia. When Bolshevik Party whose leaders were all jewish and polish jews overthrew the Czar and took over Russia, these Bolsheviks began to massacre millions of Russians who were against the Regime. Both Lenin and Stalin were jewish. Stalin married three times, each time to a jewish woman, his last wife was Kaganovich (many changed their names when they came to America -- so Kaganovich became Kagan in America). Lenin and Stalin killed over 10 million Christian Russian peasants, took their lands away, because these Chrisitan Russian peasants opposed the Communist Regime. Mao killed 75 million chinese who opposed communist china. The Islamic regime is doing the same unless Iranians wake up and realize that the enemy of Iran and its people is the Islamic Regime. Does the world care? apparently not. Mr. Obama why are you silent about iran? Why no action on Iran? Our Mr. Milani  is one of these maoist-Islamic communists, a professional revolutionary, is responsible for the death and blood shed in Iran over the past 32 years, now he is luxuriating and pontificating in his million dollar pad in Stanford U, while the majority of Iranians live in abject poverty and terror. How unconscionable! Wake up people and differentiate real Iran lovers from enemies of Iran, like Mr. Khomeini and his followers.

The islamic regime has consistently attacked unarmed civilians in Iran in violation of UN regulations. Why is the US and its allies not striking it?

Roozbeh_Gilani

How about a "no flying zone" over Tehran?

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

I mean  Khamenei/Ahmadinezhad duo  have declared a de facto war on the citizens of Tehran for daring to question their fascist medieaval islamist dictatorship. The citizens of Tehran are arrested, sent to jail and are shot to death by their cowardly prison guards for daring to question their  arbitrary death sentences.

What is the problem here? Is an Iranian life worth less than a libyan's? or is Iranian oil of better quality than Libyan oil? or is something going on behind the scenes? some form of a "blood for oil deal"...

Shame, first, on any Iranian who'd remain silent when his compatriots are murdered in such cowardly manner by the fascist islamist regime.

Shame next on western powers with their hollow claims of "human rights", who turn a blind eye on attrocities the Islamist regime is commiting against It's own citizens.

Thank you for posting! I just checked that this horrific news did not make into main stream news yet! Lately IRI's weapon shipment seizures made news a lot, but not much other news like human rights! Mousavi and Karoubi are off the radar!

It is not hard to understand that inmates will protest and riot while there are so many executions! I hope this tragedy will bring attention to IRI's non-stop executions! UN should do something quickly!

Anahid Hojjati

Dear Maryam, thanks for this most important blog

by Anahid Hojjati on

This is really something. When the prisoners protest like this, it is very powerful. With any demonstration, people take the chance that they might get injured or arrested or killed but the risk is not as high as when a prisoner protests in prison. Surely, they knew that they would be punished but still they took a stand. How brave of them.

Thanks MNY & MG!

This is horrific. Killing unarmed prisoners under any pretext is unforgivable. This madness must stop!

Thank you MNY, for your attention, speed and focus, ba sepas bsyar.

As an informed commentator wrote on this site, last night:

The world must be constantly reminded of the atrocities of the regime.
It's like the way we get bombarded by commercials on TV!
