My article just came out in the Journal of Turkish Weekly. This journal is published by the International Strategic Research Organization, which is one of the very top foreign policy think tanks in Turkey:
There are two fundamental global achievements in regards to the IRI. First, there are four UNSC resolutions, which have established the consensus of zero uranium enrichment on Iranian soil. And second, there are strong sanctions already approved by the U.S. Congress on the Central Bank of Iran to be implemented on June 28, 2012 as well as the full EU boycott of oil purchases from the IRI to be implemented on July 1, 2012.
President Obama and the American negotiating team are willing to trade these two cardinal achievements in order to avoid a conflict with the IRI in the short term.
A question is whether for the sake of political expediency (i.e., increase the likelihood of his re-election), Obama is sacrificing these unprecedented global achievements? If the IRI agrees to the agreement, it would not be easy for the U.S., the EU, and the UNSC to again craft such strong measures. The agreement will legitimize the IRI’s nuclear program and remove strong sanctions >>>//www.turkishweekly.net/op-ed/2968/-analyzing-the-istanbul-talks.html

Sanctions don't work, Never have, Never will
by bahmani on Tue May 15, 2012 05:37 PM PDTAs much as people keep putting lipstick on it, sanctions are still a Pig.
This week Gold and dollars in Iran dropped 15%. Luxury cars are being imported into Iran at an unheard of rate. And after Turkey, Iran is 1 out of 6 months closer to a Iran-made nuclear weapon. It probably already has a Made in Pakistan one. And likely let that bit of info slip out through the American Israelis in Istanbul. Hence not a peep on an attack from Israel since.
NO, sanctions and more useless talks in Baghdad are only the usual stalling tactic for a country so used to being isolated and now surrounded on ALL borders by US military presence (after Obama signed up Karzai to give America Afghanistan bases).
To survive Iran HAS to get Nukes now. There is NO option. So it will.
What the US should do now is make Iran an offer it cannot refuse. One that would make Iran look irresponsible and ungracious. One so good, that refusing it would be an act of aggression on Iran's part.
I would announce the cancelling of the sanctions at the Baghdad meeting. Announce the US is willing to open up trade without ANY limitations. And offer to build Iran 28 Natural-Gas-Powered power plants along the coastline of the Gulf, with power lines extending along the bottom to sell cheap power to the Arabs. I would also offer Iran ALL the chemotherapy isotopes it wants for free. I would then allow Iran to access the over $10B in frozen assets in US banks, to be used to refurbish, repair and upgrade Iran's petroleum refining capabilities. Using American oil companies.
Then I would very calmly and politely ask them to forget their Nuclear ambitions.
Once.
