September 26: A starlit night
by Nazy Kaviani

The stage was set for an unforgettable performance. They came by planes with suitcases full of instruments and costumes, CD's and books. In the frenzy of last minute details and all that it takes to put stars on a stage, there were moments when friendships were made and renewed and pure joy was born.

The September 26th Iranian.com Music Festival was a fantastic success for the breadth of music and performances it offered the San Francisco Bay Area [see photos]. Angels sang and masters and promising artists played. Those who came enjoyed themselves immensely and they will tell those who didn't to eat their hearts out! Stressed out and quiet as usual, the star maker ran around and worked hard to please all. He deserves a vacation just for this! It was a pleasure to be one of the many volunteers who all worked hard on the event, publicizing for it, transporting guests, helping put costumes and microphones on the performers, feeding them, and helping them feel at home. Many thanks to our team of volunteers, Faranak, Monda, Shadi, Ardi, Zahra, Foaad, Payam, Leva, Vahid, Mehran, Hadi, Ehsan, Ari, Mahdiyeh, Hamidreza, Reza, and Ehsan.

Thanks specially to fellow Iranian.com readers and contributors who took short and long trips to come and be with us. Thank you to Mahdiyeh Javid and Laleh Gilani for travelling the longest way to be there, MPD, Anahid Hojjati, Sima, Monda, Ari Siletz, Ala Hazrat Hajiagha, Bayramali, and any others who came but did not make themselves known.

It was a very special night and we missed all those who couldn't make it. Photos will be forthcoming.

Cheh shabi!

Thank you Nazy Jan. You put so much time and effort into this event. Yek donya mamnoon. You were also instrumental in the selection of these wonderful musicians. Yek donya mamnoon.

I'm still recovering from the stress of the past 10 days but I must say that musically, it turned out to be a lovely evening. Fared's Tehranosaurus shined -- they really have something special going. It's the sweetest union of East and West you can imagine. Lily Afshar made magic with her delicate hands caressing the guitar. And the Three Iranian Sopranos (Kamelia Dara, Nasrin Asgari and Shirin Asgari with Hooman Khalatbari on piano) stole hearts with their lovely voice, beauty and elegance.

Thank you for catching the typo, it was as the result of my first draft comment not being formated correctly, and not paying attention when I changed it later.

Thank you for being omat'e hamisheh dar sahneh

I was the one who brought MPD with me to the concert

He says to tell you that the performers were world class.  He had teary eyes so many times during the performances.  The Three Iranian Sopranos, and the pianist Hooman Khalatbari, were great.  They sang like angels, and they were so nice to everyone after the show.  It was amazing to watch their facial expressions and their theatrical mood changes to match their recitals.  The Farsi songs of course were the most touching ones, they awakened the most nostalgic emotional reactions in MPD.

Dr. Lily Afshar was at her best, truly one of the world’s best classical guitarists.  Her performance was remarkable and without flaw.  She practically made her guitar sing for us, and her speaking voice and grace was as great as her music.  And, her dress!  Just gorgeous!

And, Fared Shafinury, and his group Tehranosaurus, offered the audience an unforgettable night with the melodic sounds of his setar, and his beautiful voice.  It is just amazing how this young man was born in Texas but he knows so much about Persian Classical Music, and he is so much capable of bringing a modern touch to it.

MPD also says for the next event let's make it a koocheh bazari concert so other Iranians with a different taste for art can come too.

Thank you for all your hard work, he says.
