The Oscars are about to start in an hour. Let's see if everything is in place.

But before I start anything about the show or the even more delicious pre-show red carpet specials, let me lay out my predictions for tonight. I'll go ahead and skip all the minor awards and go for the ones that everyone is salivating over.
BestFilm: Even though they have expanded the category to so many films this year, It’s really only a race between Avatar (cause it’s another James Cameron blockbuster), the hurt locker (cause gritty war movies are always in, but on top of it, it’s directed by a woman, and for bonus points, it’s Cameron’s ex wife, making it into the Days of our Oscar Lives) and Up in the Air, (cause it stars the always likeable George Clooney and has garnered a lot of buzz in the award show circuit and favorable media coverage). I am gonna go with…. Up in the Air!
Best Director: I think it’s gonna be a race between the divorced couple here. And I am gonna go with James Cameron on this one.
Best Actor: It’s Jeff Bridges for sure. The role seems to have been tailor made for an Oscar win. Plus Jeff Bridges has been around for so long, that people will vote for him out of sheer likeability. George Clooney already has Oscars, it’s Jeff’s turn now!
Best supporting actor: Christoph Waltz, the German actor from Inglorious Basterds, just from the fact that he has swept up most of the awards shows this year.
Best Actress: Sandy Bullock. Cause Hollywood is like high school, and Sandy is the prom queen. And there would be too much perfect symmetry to have an actress win a Razzie for worst actress and Oscar for best actress in the same year :-)
Best Supporting Actress: Funny enough, this is the hardest to predict. Mo’nique won the Golden Globes so she is a strong contender. But Penelope Cruz was considered the only good thing to come out of Nine. Both actresses from Up in the Air have gotten good buzz but they may have their votes split by fans of the movie. And Maggie Gyllenhall is always excellent. I am gonna go with Mo’nique with this one.
Now it is time to relish the redonculous trainwrecks known as Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana De Pandi and their awkward moments with the stars as they descend upon the Red Carpet. I will update the blog often to give you my oh so succint impressions and share our sarcastic comments together. See you guys soon!
5:15 pm
Let me say this about fashion on Oscar night. It's our only chance nowadays to plunge into an escapist fantasy the way our parents and grandparents did in Hollywood's golden era, with all those costumy historical epics and frothy musicals. So let's go ahead and enjoy it, it's all part of the show folks!
The penguins: I feel sorry for the guys, they are always stuck in their boring penguin suits. So thank you to Clooney, Keanu and Robert Downey Jr for bringing a little bith of the wacky, with, respectively, their newer, longer Silver Fox hairdo, their nuclear waste facial hair, and their blue bowtie matching with blue tinted sunglasses!
The highlights: So far, I have to say Maggie Gyllenhall in that strapless blue flower print and Sarah Jessica Parker in that gold and silver Chanel Haute Couture and the Sofia Loren 60s bun. I love Maggie Gyllenhall and think she should have not only been nominated for but won the Oscar this year for the portrayal of the hippie yuppie mom in Away We Go. That line of hers about why she does'nt use strollers (I love my baby, why would I want to PUSH her away from me?) cracks me up everytime! Meryl Streep in that gorgeous white dress with the plunging neckline that shows off her fabulous skin. And Kathryn Bigelow: Tall, thin, young and glamorous, I thought she was a Hollywood starlet until i realized she is the Oscar nominated director of the gritty war movie The Hurt Locker! James Cameron, eat your heart out!
The lowlights: Miley Cyrus and her mom in matching gold and tattoo, yiiiiiikkkkeessss! Charlize Theron, usually such a glamazon but why did she chose a dress that had two giant roses cupping her boobies, like she was wearing a delicate version of the Xena Warrior Princess war armor?
Most awkward Ryan Seacrest moment: Pushing poor Queen Latifah out of the way so he can grab "A" List stars Clooney and Meryl Streep.
Okay 15 more minutes to the actual show and I can't wait to see what Baldwin and Martin have in store for us. If they could shine like that in a godawful movie like It's Complicated, they are sure to liven things up on an overly long, overly self-patting award show like the Oscars! Stay tuned folks.....
6:00 pm
The show got off to a cheesetastic start with a bunch of nominees standing on stage, looking so awkward... what was that about? After that, Neil Patrick Harris stumbled onstage (maybe he thought it was the Emmys?) Things didn't really get off to a great start until Baldwin and Martin descended upon us. I appreciated the tongue in cheek introductory photo montage of the great comedy teams like Martin and Lewis and Turner and Hooch :-)
Well Baldwin and Martin did not disappoint. They had perfect timing and even their more risque jokes (like Meryl Streep's Hitler memoriabilia) got well deserved laughs.
Christoph Waltz won the first BIG Oscar of the night for best supporting actor. So one of my predictions came true woo-hoo! By the way his Oscar speech was the example to follow: A nice, appropriate metaphor, including all the right names to thank without looking like you are rambling on, and just the right amount of emotion, this European showed the Americans what class is all about.
On the fashion front, noticed a lot of red gowns from Vera Farmiga, who truly looked like a red rose in bloom to Penelope Cruz who always looks fantastic. Cameron Diaz on the other hand looked like she borrowed her gown from taylor Swift's closet.
More to come....
7:20 pm
John Hughes Tribute: Another awkward "tableau vivant" starring his most famous actors failed to pay respect to one of the directors who had the most lasting influence on our pop culture. My personal favorite of Hughes has always been "She's having a baby" and ironically, the clip they showed of it featured a young Alec Baldwin.
Kanye Moment: Did Kanye metamorphose into an old, fat crazy white woman? I felt so bad for the guy who won the Oscar for best documentary when this seemingly crazy witch jumped onstage and kind of stole his moment. No word yet whether she was just a party crasher or really even associated with the film. Oh well, this takes us back to the good old days of Oscar impromptu scandals like the streaker and the Marlon Brando Cherokee envoy!
Comic relief; Anybody who follows my posts knows I have no lost love for Ben Stiller. So I really mean it when I say he kinda redeemed himself with his very comical AVATAR impression as he presented the best Makeup category (ironically, one in which Avatar was not even nominated)
Best Supporting Actress: It was definitely time for another big Award and as predicted Monique won for Best Supporting Actress. And despite all the emotion, she contained herself well and made a short and neat speech, and most of all irt was very dignified (Halle Berry, are you taking notes?)
Best dressed: On the fashion front, Zoe Saldana wowed with her sparkly puprle pompom dress. yes, my description makes it sound hideous and perhaps on anyone else less svelte and confident, it would have been a complete clown moment but on the gracious and gorgeous Saldana, it was a smash. I think the award for best gown of the night goes to her.
THE END
Steve Martin said it best to close the ceremony: The award show is so long that now AVATAR takes place in the past! Okay, so to conclude:
Biggest dragging on moment: Having the best actor and actress nominees introduced one by one by previous co-stars. Hey, we know who they are and what movies they did in the past. Can we please move on? Although it would have been funny to have some less illustrious co-stars introduce them, like having Sylvester Stallone introducing Sandra Bullock or Cybill Sheperd introducing Jeff Bridges!
Most teary moment: I genuinely was moved when Gabourey Sidibe started tearing up as Oprah Winfrey compared her to Meryl Streep
Biggest Injustice of the night: Sandy Bullock winning over Meryl Streep. Don't get me wrong, I love Sandy! She is sweet and funny and down to earth and she is a good actress. But this was OSCAR night! Meryl has just spoiled us for too long by being so consistently good in all her movies for the past 30 odd years that it feels more right somehow to award the person who once starred in the sequel to Miss Congeniality just because she decided to up the ante with a feel good movie. Well, Meryl wuz robbed y'all! She should have won for Devil Wears Prada and she should have won this year for Julie Julia. Let's be honest, just by virtue of Sophie's Choice, she ought to win every year for everything!!!
Biggest AVATAR backlash: Holy cow, what does it take to win an Oscar around here, when being the highest grossing film in the history of film is not enough? I thought it was really cute that they got the notoriously maligned Streisand to hand the award to Kathryn Bigelow.
Final Fashion Notes: The Oscars were surprisingly in good taste this year, almost to the point of being boring. No dead swan dress. No Vegas showgirl see through gown! No bycycle shorts! What's the world coming to? I though the ladies all looked beautiful and noone could really be said to deserve any less than accolades. Theer was a bevy of beauties in red, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sigourney Weaver, Vera Farmiga, Penelope Cruz, who each stood out on their own. Sandy Bullock looked like an Oscar statuette herself. Very very pretty! Kate Winslet I wanted to tackle to the ground so I can get my grubby hands on those beautiful yellow diamond jewels. All in all, very dazzling night, just a wee bit too perfect for my taste though.
Oh well, another one bites the dust. Let the countdown begin for next year.....

pardon my bisavadi
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 05:01 PM PSTDear Redwine, please pardon my bisavadi. I tried to decipher your comment in our mother tongue. I think I got the gist of it, that you pray for European cinema to be rid of Hollywood filth? I like foreign films as much as any film buff but also, for every gem that is put out there, I think there is a high number of really poor European films as well. They are not all Fellini after all! I have a fondness for Hollywood films (not all) because when it works, it really works. After all, without Hollywood, we would not have some of my favorite movies, from those beautiful escapist musicals and Disney cartoons that every kid grows up on, to the gritty 70s movies such as Godfather, Chinatown, Network, Mean Streets, to the innovative, exciting movies of Tarantino, Anderson, Soderbergh, Aronofsky etc. Not to mention what Hollywood has done for immigrant directors like Hitchcock, Chaplin or Polanski to name a few. Do you think Hitch or Chaplin would have been able to do what they did in their native England? Or if Polanski stayed in Poland? I think not. Not to be overly indulgent on Hollywood, but I also don't believe that it is all filthy and superficial as much as some would think.
Mouse, you are really cracking me up with your fashion commentary, we should be E Channel's new hosts for their Fashion Wrap-up!
I like getting imaginative as long as no drapery or upholstery!
by Anonymouse on Mon Mar 08, 2010 04:39 PM PSTI'm ok if some like to have big bows as long as they/it are/is not placed on private part(s)! Or if they want a sneeze guard under their boobs who am I to argue?! Sure none of these stuff does anything for me per se, but I'm not Ahmadi, I too like a little glamour and dress up!
I just think if she's intimitated about being Clooney's love interest you don't dress like an aquarium plant and expect accolades! Or if you're skinny and flat chested you don't "deck out" and show us all skin and bones! Ma che gonahi kardim?! Or if you're fat you don't dress like the Michelin woman!
Bill Engvall in Jeff Foxworthy's blue collar comedy tour would say this in their "I believe ..." routine; I believe ... that there should be an application process for wearing a thong!
Everything is sacred.

Mad Men = my new addiction
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 02:05 PM PSTThey did such a great job recreating the era and the actors and writing is so up there. Excellent! After a long time that I could not stomach TV series anymore (Gray's Anatomy? Brothers and Sisters? Desperate Housewives? Pouahhhh :-(((....) it was refreshing to see something written and acted so well.
Mouse, you're so funny!!! My husband hated all my top choices too. I can see where he and you are coming from. You are thinking realistically, what would look good on a woman in an everyday setting. I on the other hand let my inner Doris Day/Rock Hudson loving gay man take hold and plunge into fantasy land :o)
Niki jaan you like the sheredded looks with ruffles,it's cool!
by Anonymouse on Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:54 PM PSTZoe Saldana's dress; see they're all ruffly and shredded! It looks like someone threw some ink on her fabric and the tailor jerry rigged a dress out of it at the last moment because they didn't have any plan B for accidents!
She also looks like she is wearing 2 dresses! She's tiny too and her dress probably weigh more than her!
But I know what you're saying, these gowns are worn only once a year and only to Oscars. I just don't understand why they have to keep going to 19th century and dress like debutantes! It's like if I come across a lot of money I go and live in a fancy tree house!
The trailers don't have to be that long! Imagine there is an Islamic fashion show and all the chadors have "shefan", ruffles and the shredded look! Not a good comparison, but still, what's wrong with using a good cool fabric that you can actually compliment the "fabric" itself? Meryl Streep's fabric for example was noteworthy. I think the fabric in and of itself stood out, the gown notwithstanding.
I think Meryls' dress would look good on someone young. Whereas others were going for the cougar look!
Everything is sacred.
Niki do you watch Mad Men?
by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:38 PM PSTI love that show so much. Are you also addicted? If you haven't seen it......now! start now!
Christina Hendricks is great! all the women do a good job on that show, actually.
I coulda been a contender!
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:22 PM PSTLoL I loved it when they played that clip of Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. The fact that his performance and the dialogue is still so fresh and relevant today speaks volumes about the quality of his performance and of the movie in general. I love those film montages at the Oscar, taking a path down memory lane!
My worst dress choice has to be Charlize Theron. I am not a fan of any look that cups your boobs. Ummmm we know they're there, please don't draw more attention to them. They're about as chic as dresses that cup your vajayjay as Oprah would say!
I know you are not in agreement but I absolutely loved Vera Farmiga's stunning origami red dress. I thought she looked like a red rose in full bloom and also reminded me of some of those elegant dresses from 19th century France that you see in the Impressionist paintings. Fashion as art. Not for everyone!
But my best dress has to go to Zoe Saldana in the Givenchy purple and sparkly dress. Because no one else but her could pull that off. I think on anyone else it would have looked hideous but she shone in it. And it was the kind of daring dress that you could only wear at the Oscars and I liked the fact that she at least went for it instead of going for a boring black dress.
Hubby's fave of the night was Kate Winslet. I have to say I loved her hair and makeup and jewelry the best. That Veronica Lake blond hair was perfect especially as there were so many that just went for buns. And that necklace was the most beautiful necklace I have ever seen. It was perfect and such a compliment to her dress.
Special mention to Monique. It was very touching that she chose the same shade of blue and the same kind of flowers in her hair as an homage to Hattie McDaniel, the first African American woman to ever win an Oscar (I believe for Gone in the Wind). That was very classy and sweet fashion homage. Good for her! Not to mention that she showed big girls can look fabu too!
Niki jaan sheredded looks is in!
by Anonymouse on Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:01 PM PSTThere were a lot of shredded gowns. Probably due to designers cutting so much fabric and end up stitching it all back at the end. Can't make up their mind!
//oscars.movies.yahoo.com/photos/120-2010-red-carpet-fashion-report-card#OmgPhoid=19
I would give the worst dressed to Charleze Theron and Vera Farmiga in the above link, good summary photo blog. Which one is your worst dressed choice?!
Liveblogging is good. If there were few people commenting live, it'd have been fun. We could've commented on ruffles and shredded looks! We could've been somebody!
Everything is sacred.
Shifteh Jan thank you for the tip
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:29 AM PSTI guess that would be the way to not have it unfeatured. I don't know if I will do it again though. It ended up being such a long post and kinda repetitive. I mean with this subject matter, do we really need to know what I think over each segment of the award show? lol Real news liveblogging or sports event liveblogging seem to be more appropriate.
Mouse Jan, I don't like shredded look either. That was Demi Moore's style this year and though she is a gorgeous woman and that dress made her look stunning, it just wasn't my cup of tea. Although I wouldn't go so far as to call it hideous lol I would reserve that kind of thing for real atrocities like Tilda Swinton at last year's Oscars (she looked like a cast member from the Visitors!) or Barbra Streisand in that see through number back in the 60s. At least though she was having a bit of fun and we are still talking about it decades later so if she is crazy, it must be crazy like a fox :o)
Niki jaan the un-featuring blog wasn't why I missed it
by Anonymouse on Mon Mar 08, 2010 10:11 AM PSTLooks like Marge had the same problem. I guess we both need to look closer! I actually don't particularly pay attention to "featured" blogs. Usually I just go to the blog section and just pick the blogs. Sometimes I get curious about why a blog isn't featured but in your case I'd have known why because you would've been editing it.
Now that I think of it I'm not sure if it was after 4 PM or 5 PM (Calif time) that I turned the komputer off. Anyway, I wished I had not missed it and Shifteh's suggestion is good, although in this case I'd just forget about "featuring" and do both, add comments for each subject or fashion faux paw and add it to the blog itself.
As for the history behind red carpet fashions, interesting. I think this has become like Pentagon's $1000 hammer or Health industry's $100 Tylenol pill. It has just gone hay wire!
They're now so convoluted that the outcome is just hidious. I think Mary Hart may have the best solution which is she lets people choose from 3 or 4 of her gowns. This way it is at least guaranteed not to be a guaranteed miss!
I really think the shredded or ruffled designs are god awful. Reminds me of Seinfeld's "puffy shirt"! LOL!
Everything is sacred.
Dear Niki
by Shifteh Ansari on Mon Mar 08, 2010 09:20 AM PSTThank you for your interesting blog. I have done live news blogging in the past, so I share my experience with you. Nah...
by Jahanshah Javid on Mon Mar 08, 2010 09:12 AM PSTI didn't watch the Oscars. But I saw an excellent film: Polanski's "Ghost Writer".
Dear Marge I thought of you too lol
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 09:12 AM PSTI actually did this thing just because of your suggestion (I have never done liveblogging before)
I thought the sets were magnificent and the hosting impeccable. Most of the people were restrained and really did not make a fool of themselves in their acceptance speeches (No "You love me, you really love me" or "I'm the King of the World" moments) Of course, those gaffes are what makes the Oscars fun and memorable. So maybe it was all a bit TOO subdued this year. It did drag on at the end, that's a tradition the Oscars never miss, they are just way TOO LONG!...
Dear JJ were you watching too?
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 09:09 AM PSTI really enjoyed this year more than previous because of Baldwin and Martin: I thought they were perfect and had such good chemistry together. Really, they should take their show on the road. I'd get tickets!
Shame about technical glitch. Can't it be fixed? I wouldn't know any other way to live blog if it were not for editing it from time to time. Guess would be useless to live blog in the future. I'll stick to my morning after report :o)
PS: The Red Carpet Issue
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 09:05 AM PSTMouse, by the way, there is a very interesting documentary (at least for fashion buffs) about the behind the scenes going on of the red carpet that was airing yesterday on TV right before the Oscars. It is called "The Red Carpet Issue" and features many famous actresses such as Monica Bellucci and many designers, PRs and stylists talking very candidly about what a business it is to get the gown on the shoulders of the actress at each event.
It used to be that Hollywood stars simply went to the studio designers like Edith Head who would design them a custom made gown just like they would for their movie characters. People like Audrey Hepburn changed that when she began a real muse-designer relationship with Givenchy and so there were very interesting match-ups afterwards, like Catherine Deneuve and YSL, and Cher and Bob Mackie.
I think in the 70s and 80s, the actresses became more independent of the studios and started dressing themselves. Probably the 80s were the most fun to be had on the red carpet because it showed how much some of them, no matter how pretty they were, had such a godawful taste! Kim Basinger, Gina Davis, and Demi Moore being prime examples.
After all that press backlash, nowadays we have the opposite extreme which is that actresses hire an entire team of people to scour the earth in search of freebie designer dresses. And then they have like ten fittings in which their stylist takes a hundred pictures of them in different poses to make sure the look is photogenic! But it is even worse than that. They are actually making the design houses bid on them, pay them insane amounts of cash to endorse their designs not even only for a premiere but for an entire season or ad campaign. Nicole Kidman and Chanel being a prime example of that several years ago. It has gotten to the point that they may as well put a "Space for Rent" sign between their shoulder blades to go for the highest bidder.
On one hand, the actresses justify this saying this gives them the financial independence to do movies they like rather than doing awful movies to put food on the table. But this is just a bit of a cop-out. On the list of ills of the world, this is definitely a minor minor hiccup yet I kinda miss the days when you could expect to be truly shocked by some of the get ups these women donned on the red carpet. It just made it more fun. Nobody remembers who won in this and that year but everybody still remembers fashion moments such as Cher and her showgirl headdress... Those were the days!
I'm so sorry I missed this
by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on Mon Mar 08, 2010 09:07 AM PSTI thought of you while I was watching and I even checked. Ah! I need better glasses. Sorry.
I'm surprised that Avatar didn't win. I am curious to see "The Hurt Locker." I liked the hosting and I think it was a beautifully designed gala.
QUESTION: What was up with that face by Samuel L. Jackson after Monique's speech?
I loved the horror film tribute. They played "The Omen's" theme but no omen scenes!
Featured blog
by Jahanshah Javid on Mon Mar 08, 2010 08:51 AM PSTNiki Jan, your blog was featured. But when you edit your blog, it falls from the featured list.
Dear Mouse this blog was not featured yesterday
by Niki Tehranchi on Mon Mar 08, 2010 08:46 AM PSTwhich is why you may have missed it. I can assure you I started blogging live from 4pm, 1 hour before the show, and then I updated about every hour or so (I even put in the time after each update).
Avatar's loss was Celine Dione's Titanic overload syndrome!
by Anonymouse on Mon Mar 08, 2010 06:06 AM PSTI haven't seen Hurt Locker yet but don't understand all the losses for Avatar. I think perhaps the Academy did not appreciate the blockbuster and the huge support it received from people. Jealousy maybe?!
I think something is inherently wrong when Academy tells a billion people who saw the movie, more than any other film in a one year peiod, that they're wrong and the best picture is something else!
Maybe the memory of Celin Dione's overplayed Titanic song made few members develop a flinch during the voting and made them cast their votes for the anti-Christ!
Sandra's Oscar was probably a charity oscar, first ever nomination and win! And who was the best supporting actor guy?!
Niki jaan I checked and you weren't live blogging at the beginning of the program. Maybe you made notes and then wrote the blog but had I known I may have kept the komputer on.
The fashion this year was just horrible! Charleze Theron's roses on her twins! George's Clooney's love interest in shredded cloth! What's up with all the shredding of clothes this year?! The inside hosts were great, the outside hosts were out of place!
Overall a "balanced" prize night that distributed the prizes evenly but perhaps misguided. I have seen worse Oscar shows in the years past and this one was ok. The fashions were one of the worst shows though!
Everything is sacred.
