i understand what you are driving at, but you know my position on this is quite different. i see a changed world with a new economic and political order. the new political order will come with a lag behind the economic one while nations take their time to digest the changes and their changed roles.

israel is already an outcast and will wake up to the fact soon. the us is relatively weaker. much weaker. the european economies are like dinosaurs. asia and latin america are far stronger than they appear, and africa is already on the rise too.

as a student i initially subscribed to certain 'dependency theories' (Samir Amin, Immanuel Wallerstein, Andre Gunter Frank etc), but this soon changed as i realised that their worldviews were static, negative and self-defeating.

relations among nations are in a constant state of flux. just as the west was very poor and backwards not long ago but changed to become highly advanced on several fronts, so is the same likely to happen with the rest of the world.

the difference between now and the early period of modern history is that such changes happen much faster due to technology. nations, borders, technologies and knowledge itself are all malleable, fluid, porous and inter-related.

let us not box whole peoples and nations into small, clearly 'defined' packages with simple labels.

and let us not reduce the intellect and power of the great majority of the people in the world to the status of some 'puppet' of this or that minority group.

you really hit the nail on the head there! a call to peace is mistaken for a call to war. if you mention that the people should choose the kind of state they want through a referendum, they say you hate jews because everyone knows the palestinians constitute a majority. in fact, they always have.

even the jewish state they won't stop talking about from 3,000 years ago was not exclusively jewish. what business do they have telling the palestinians, the ancient and constant people of the land, that they are foreigners in their own homeland? how on earth did it become acceptable to tolerate such israeli behaviour?

"why then should it become exclusively jewish?".  This is call for peace for sure.  It clearly questions the justification for an exclusively Jewish state rather than seeking annihilation of Jews!!  Just in the same way that opposition to an "Islamic Republic" does not call for the eradication of Islam and Muslims from Iran!  Although I am sure for some, it does, and those tend to be the ones who construe the idea of  "not an exclusively Jewish state" as 'No Jews'!

 Of course, I recognize that that is not an accurate analogy in so far as Israel is a colonial entity.

i don't feel comfortable discussing 'the jews' in this way. jews live everywhere like christians and others. talking about jews as if they belong to a specific land is telling them that they do not belong to their own countries. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 did not talk about a Jewish state. Balfour's letter stated:

"His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in
Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their
best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being
clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the
civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in
Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any
other country".

notice the reference to palestine. Not israel. and it refers to a 'national home' IN palestine rather than a 'state'. 

to you, israel is 'jews land'. to me, it is palestinian land. israel should not be allowed to be a 'jewish state' because the land does not belong to the jews. it never has and never will. jews were always a minority in the area and that is the case even today. 

when discussing Israel, i am Not discussing 'the jews'. i am discussing a nuclear-armed apartheid state that is an existential threat to my country.

the compulsion to speak of a jewish home land arose because of western anti-semitism, fascism and nazism. they should have given their own land for the jews rather than someone else's.

 About the the Jews.I'm not offended and It depends on the conversation but usually I try not to be harsh.I do think it's blown way out of porportion here.Sometimes a different view can be harsh especially when it's the exact opposite of what you have been thinking.

 But sounding 'AIPAC style' here is anything positive for the Jew's.Do you think it should be 100% Negative here all the time? Some people do and get upset that it's not.

it's the thing i really like about america: people really mingle regardless of perceived backgrounds. i was in washington last december, and got caught in that awful snow storm on my way back home! that snow was real heavy! what was really noticeable more than anything else to me during my 10-day stay there was the way people acknowledged each other everywhere. there was much more a sense of a community on the street than some other western countries like the uk. it's a lively and quite friendly place.

but the politics totally sucks man. those surreal pharmaceutical corporations' ads on tv were just shocking. i mean both the commercial ads and the ones they were running against the health reform bill. and every other ad was a pharmaceutical one. they really dominate. it was all scare tactics and utter lies in both commercial and political ads and in a large part of the media coverage of the issues. 'Death Panels'? for heaven's sake! :) 

anyhow, i do appreciate and mostly agree with your perspective on the core principles, at least as far as i can comprehend them. those very values of freedom and justice are universal.

we mainly differ on tactics. it is a great thing that iraq has democracy now. but she is also three - if not four - decades behind in development, and the war goes on. hopefully for not much longer. it may have been more effective to give peace a chance for at least ten years and let iraq gain her own democracy at a far lower cost to life, property, infrastructure, and psychological well being of 25 million people. mind you, the invasion was just the treat for the iri. they could not believe their luck. first the us went for the taleban, and then for saddam. israel is next?!

My name is misleading and I regret that I can't tell you much about myself because I have recieved a death threat here from someone who is severely mentally disabled.

But it's not my regret to express my opinion's.

I am American.And you know in America we have every people of origin.Even some Bonzo kidnapped.It's no big deal to me.

I have always lived and grown up around many different origin's,races and religions.I'm older.I first knew Iranian's as college student's in the mid 80's.I always remember how excited they were to be in America.They had some real diaspora's.

One I knew,was defecting.Another I knew had fought in the Iran/Iraq war for 5 years and saw his entire family killed.I have never felt disconnected from Iranian's.

You have fascinating origin.A real Iranian Mix.Just as interesting as if you would had been a Palestinean or not.

I think all of Iran has some beautiful landscape and mix of people and of course History.I do wish there was more of it here at Iranian.com to see.

By the way,I'm a Christian,the opposite of a Jew.

i know you were sitting with a great deal of anticipation last night hoping that the iri would be burned to the ground on chaharshanbeh soori. what poetic justice that would be. you were searching for some flicker of hope after the 22 bahman disappointments on shifteh's blog. and it did not happen. and we are still stuck with this god-awful system that makes the middle ages look modern. it is absolutely infuriating, painful and miserable to watch. when will we get our country back from these X*^@^%ses?

but it is a gigantic world out there AO. and within that there are many many 'countries' with problems i do not think you are too aware of. and within each of those countries there are millions upon millions of people, each with their own little universes they live in with their own beliefs and outlooks. 

you and i, wherever we are sitting, can imagine in our own heads that we got it 'sorted' and 'right'. then we will convince ourselves that the majority are on 'our' side with 'our' way of thinking, and then suddenly a little 'monster' - niloufar - will pop up and start talking a whole different world and sets of ideas, and this monster must be 'exposed' and made a subject of ridicule. monsters deserve it. don't they AO?

well i went along with this revolutionary festivity playing out on IC for a while, and then realised that i was getting way ahead of myself and further and further from realities on the ground.

some of you guys will continue talking revolution because you are so 'sure' about everything that is going on. and surely those like me who refuse to talk your particular language of resistance must be working for the other side. of that you are convinced, and there is nothing i can say to change your mind.

i visited shifte's blog several times yesterday and saw little that could be described as news. i browsed several other web sites. not a single news agency ran any serious story other than highlighting increased security force deployment in several places. the Guardian had a live blog running, but it too had nothing worthwhile.

i wanted to say something there, but i knew whatever i said would cause an uproar. i wanted to say 'people, we need to talk about this'. reason? they were so far off with their expectations and predictions, someone needs to gather the courage to say: 'let's get more real'. but i didn't. yet you followed me in here to chase me and demand an explanation for my silence on that blog. and i have given it to you in the most honest and clear way that i can.

but i am sure you will come back and accuse me of more things yet again.

my only gripe with you and some others here is this: you are out of touch, yet you ram your demonstrably mistaken perspective down everyone's throats and will run around here beating your chests and crying that you are being denied the truth and freedom and whatever else it is that causes you to adopt your accusatory tones.

and i sit here and read all this personal abuse from the likes of you thinking they are misguided and angry. and they are looking for someone to blame for iran's failure to be a model country that an expat would be proud of.

thanks for that. i don't know enough about the japanese motivation at the time. what i do know is that they attacked the us first and that they were not far from winning the war. i don't think iran is on the verge of attacking the us. do you?
the analogy is far-fetched.

if you think that iran is provoking the us too much and will end up
being attacked, that is plausible, but that is not what happened with
japan.  i certainly pray this will not happen.

re. the economic arguments, i frankly think it would be suicidal for the world economy today to have another war in the middle east.
