Well said Fair

For what is worth, as one person, I agree with Fair's assessment below. You can only work with the population, or the team that you have. You can not rule from the top, be it industrialization, as the Shah wanted, or Democratization, as the educated elite wanted (and wants).

I join you in supporting a secular democratic government in Iran where no king, ayatollah, or other figurehead holds the power.

But take a look in the streets, and in our society. Take a look at the very first few articles of the Islamic Republic's constitution- which many many people voted for. Nothing could be further from democracy- a government which derives its power from God. Please do not pretend that until only recently (and even then time will tell) that the vast majority of our people believed in a secular system in which mosque and state are separated. There is a reason that the National Front capitulated in 1979 and supported Khomeini, whereas the ONE nationalist who actually stayed true to his nationalist principles- Bakhtiar- was laughed out of the country.

I have come to believe over the years that while democracy in Iran had many foreign enemies, the main obstacle was domestic. You cannot have a nice secular representative government while a bunch of ayatollahs tell people you are satan and are to be killed. Even today, look how many marja's are quiet about the crimes against Iranians. The only time this will be possible is when the MAINSTREAM of our population, and I mean over 90%, believe strongly that religion should stay out of government. Otherwise, you will have pasdars and basijis and other terrorists who feel justified killing anyone who stands in their way, and the only law they believe in is the quran as interpreted for them by a mullah.

This was not the case in 1979, obviously. So if we are not going to have a democracy, if we are going to have a dictator, I would have the shah over khomeini anyday, because at least he cared about his country. His country came before his ideology. Khomeini and IR give not one bit of care for Iran, it is only for their backward ideology.

So while you may disagree with me, and say bad is bad, I believe among dictators, shah is much better than islamic republic. So yes, bad is bad, but it could be be worse. And worse is what we got in 1979. Of course we would like good, but question is, please come up with a realistic plan for how. Even today, it is very questionable what outcome we could expect if these protests continue for a long time.

That is the tragedy of Iran- a large number of wonderful deserving people are held hostage by a bunch of barbarians.

من باور میکنم که شما چندین کتاب در این زمینه ظرف چند ماه گذشته خوانده اید، چون من هم ظرف سالهای گذشته اینکار را کردم. اگر نویسنده خودی بود، ماجرا را بسیار غم انگیز به نفع پهلوی با نتیجه گیریهای خود و وابستگیهایش به انها به نگارش دراورده. اگر نویسنده از طرفداران جمهوری اسلامی بود، همه چیز را بزرگتر جلوه داده، که گزافگویی بیش نیست. من هم مابین کتابهای ایرانی که تا حال خوانده ام ، موضوع کودتا و برگشت شاه شاهان مطرح نشده، ولی نویسندگان المانی و امریکایی و غیره بیشتر این مسئله را مورد بررسی قرار داده و انرا مطرح کرده اند. و از طرفی، اگر نگاهی به رفتار تمام دیکتاتورها ی از قدرت افتاده در طول تاریخ بیاندازیم، می بینیم که انها  پائین امدن از قدرت را نمیتوانند به راحتی قبول کنند و در زمان سقوط دست به یکنوع رفتار کلیشه ای میزنند. در نتیجه نمیتوان به نگارش کتابهایی که بدست ایرانیان موافق و یا مخالف با رژیم هستند تکیه کرد.‌

 برای مثال؛ كشتار ١٧ شهريور و اعتصاب كاركنان شركت ملی نفت كنترل امنيت كشور را از دست نيروهای رژيم و حتی حكومت نظامی، خارج کرده بود و باعث شد که این حرکت موجب سستی پایه های حکومت شاه شاهان باشد. «جیمی کارتر» یکی از ژنرال های نیروی هوائی خود را که در انزمان معاون فرمانده نيروی هوايی آمريكا در اروپا بود، به نام  (Robert E. Huyser)  برای ماموریت ویژه ای که مخفیانه از دید مردم بود را برای کمک به شرایط  آن دوران به شاه و گزارش از شرایط ایران به ایران فرستاد، که شما و دیگر علاقمندان میتوانید کتاب خاطرات او را به نام (Mission to Tehran) و ملاقاتهای روزانه ء او را با سران ارتش نیروی زمینی، نیروی هوائی و دریائی و سران شهربانی و ژاندارمری و ساواک را که بطور مفصل توضیح داده، مطالعه کنید.  ژنرال رابرت هایزر، با اختیارات تام دستورالعملهای خود را به سران وقت اعلام میکرد. و سران آن را به شاه  ابلاغ میکردنند.

پس از عدم موفقيت دولت نظامی ازهاری در برقراری نظم و آرامش و رفع اعتصاب ها كه اقتصاد كشور را فلج كرده بود، به شاه ابلاغ شد که به یکی از رهبران جبهه ملی متوسل شود.  شاه اخرين تير خود را که به دستور امریکا بود رها كرد و سعی كرد با انتخاب يكی از اعضای جبهه ملی كه به ظاهر از مخالفان شاه است، خشم مردم را فرو نشاند. به همين جهت شاپور بختيار به شرط گرفتن اختيارات كامل و خروج شاه از كشور بعد از رای اعتماد مجلسين به دولت، نخست وزيری را بپذیرد. و به گفتهء ژنرال هایزر که در طول اقامت تقربیاً ٢ ماهه اش که ماموریت کودتا را بر عهده داشت و شرایط را بسیار پر هرج و مرج و اشفته دید به دستور از مقامهای بالاتر ازخود از شاه خواست که ایران را برای مدتی ترک کند. شاه فقط به تکیه بر حامیان خود ایران را به امید واهی برگشت، ترک کرد. و جالب این بود که یک دیکتاتور از دوستان نزديك و حاميان و اربابانش رو دست خورد، و چون دیگر هیچ بود، بیشتر حامیان او از پذيرفتن او امتناع كردند.

 در تاریخ  ٩/ جولای /١٩٨٠ برنامهء کودتای نوژه که طرح ریزی شده از  (CIA) بود و میلیونها دلار مخارج را در برداشت که زیر نظر شاهپور بختیار در پاریس هدایت میشد در زمان حیات شاه شاهان که در یکی از بیمارستانهای ارتش مصر بستری بود، میبایست اتفاق میافتاد، که جلوی انرا گرفتند. و شاه در روز جمعه٢٧ / جولای ١٩٨٠ در گذشت.

Then and Now

Ba Dorood, two headlines caught my eye. One isa coup in Somalia where 180 army officers were executed. I wonder if Somalia's dive into chaos started then.

The other one is "New regulation for obtaining mortgages" which is actually the bigger headline on the front page.

Just for sake of argument, since we are sitting comfortably by our laptops outside of the arena, in your opinion, how should they have headlined the demonstrations in Tabriz back then ?

One of those rare AghelAneh things that you accidentally say, but Shah was late a few years. Perhaps if Bakhtiar (or likes of him) had been brought in 3-5 years earlier, it would have worked.

Ironicaly, Shah was the 1st leader in our history

 post-Sassanid who introduced us to real democracy via the person of shahpour Bakhtiar ,his prime minister in which Iran enjoyed the level of democracy unsurpassed in the middle east & I might say even some parts of europe . @ that period Iran was ripe for great constructive reform from within that was interupted by foreign jehadist occupation, the mullahs as was the copy cat case during late Sassanid strive for reform within that was violently interupted by bedoin attack. I have read a few books on the Shah's last months in power. I have not come across any substantial evidence, pointing to a coup at works, or even a plot for one.

Who was supposed to lead this coup? The Americans? The Army? Bakhtiar? The Savak?

He may have wished his son to take over, but at the end, anyone could see, there was no zest in the Shah's eyes, to rule, or to live.

I believe he knew the end was coming, for his regime, and for his life, way before he left Iran.

they won't go without a fight

I totally agree with Jamshid....as they have said many times before, they are not guests that have to leave sometime, they are here to stay. They have been preparing for this for a long time now.....did you know Iran was one of the first countries to have advanced body armour for its police units? or mobile(motorbike) squads ready to pounce whenever needed? No sir,I'm afraid there's going to be a lot of blood shed....I hope to whoever, this does not materialize, but i'm very pessimistic.

من هم واقف به این اصل هستم که این بی همه چیزان و کسان قصد عقب نشینی را در حال حاضر ندارنند، و نفس کشیدن را میخواهند از مردم بگیرند. ولی بدی اینها نباید توجیهی برای بهتر بودن خاندان پهلوی باشد. بد،بد است. چه از نوع زرق و برق و چه از نوع عمامه . با شما در زمینه های مختلف هم عقیده ام ولی از بت و بت پرستی بیزارم. خانوادهء من چه در دوران شاه و چه در دوران اخوندان فقط برای ابراز عقاید خود در زندان بسر بردنند، و من این احساس را دارم که هنوز بخاطر بیان عقیده ام چه در رابطه با پهلوی و چه دولت فاشیست اسلامی هنوز مورد توهین و بیحرمتی قرار میگیرم. ولی من بیدی نیستم که با وزش این نوع بادها به خود بلزم. این افراد بسیار سرد مزاجند و فوری حالشان از شیندن نظر دیگران دگرگون میشود، و این خود نشانهء ضعف انهاست. چه فرقی بین این دو گروه است؟ هیچ فرقی نیست، هر دوی اینها ادعای ازادی بیان دارنند و دم از دمکرات بودن میزنند که همه ما میدانیم دروغی بیش نیست.

من برای محبت شما که وقت گذاشتید و نظرتان را بیان میکنید بسیار احترام و ارزش قائلم، اما با در رابطه با اینکه شاه یه جو  «ارزش و افتخار » برای خود و مردم ایران قائل بود و ایران را ترک کرد، نظری دیگر دارم که در یکی از کامنتهای خود در این بلاگ انرا مطرح کردم. او به امید به اینکه با یک گودتای دیگر برمیکردد، ایران را ترک کرد و گرنه بیشتر میماند و بیشتر برای حفظ مقامش تلاش میکرد.

اینکه ایا خامنه ای ایران رابراحتی ترک خواهد کرد؟ نه به هیچوجه گدا علی اینکار را نخواهد کرد،  او همانند ناخدای کشتی میخواهد قهرمانانه بمیرد و کلی از افراد را با خود ببرد. و به نظر من او نه میداند شرف چیست و نه از انسانیست بویی برده. ولی در کل رهبران مستبد خودشیفته دارای یک هویت کاذب هستند که بسیار سرمست و از حال خود بیخبرند. در این زمینه بلاگی خواهم نوشت که بطور مفصل از حال رهبران خودشیفته بیخیال توضیح خواهم داد.

Jamshid is right I am afraid...

.. we the opposition underestimate and miscalculate our enemy at our own peril. I am afraid to say, Jamshid is right when he says we have not even witnessed a fraction of the brutality these creatures are capable of.

The Shah was a dictator, but he never had the audacity to go as far as these criminals, and in the end yielded to the clear will of his people.

The Ayatollah has no such decency. That is what happens when you have God on your side. There is no debate. The enemies of God must be killed. That is why religion should have no place in government.

Notice also how few of the high ranking clerics (marja's) are silent about this. Each day they are silent, they lend support to the murderers and rapists who commit crimes in the name of Islam.

These are the people and the ideology around which people rallied to oppose the Shah. Unfortunately, the people of Iran today are faced with a much bigger price tag for their liberation than their parents were 30 years ago.

Thanks Mom, Thanks Dad. I hope you are happy now.

Noosh Afarin, how does beating up on shah as you do endlessly

help the current Iranian dilemma? Promote what you think is good for Iran rather than constant attacks on shah and pahlavis. What you do is very different that what DK does and he openly states his position. What is yours? There are volumes written on shah's screw ups and volumes on his accomplishments. and endless more books on shah/sheikh half baked stories and on and on. But numbers, real statistical numbers that actually mean tangible economic, social and other progress in both historical and economic context are on Shah's side. He certainly was Iranian, nationalist and a human, albeit quite flawed. How could that compare to subhuman, alien scums of IRR?

On the front that counts most, human life. Official human rights numbers put executions at time of Shah at 1500-5000 range depending on whose number you believe. The same for IRR is in the 120,000 to 180,000 and that's before the current murders since June. Do the math based on years and population. Never mind the several hundred thousand that were sent to unnecessary deaths for a shameless war. Or all the rights given away from Khazar to Persian Gulf.

Certainly, in the midst of Iranians getting killed in the streets with much bloodshed yet to come focus is on IRR. Har sokhan jayee o har nokte maghami darad. When the crime of rape is happening, one does not spend time analyzing the PDSS(post dramatic stress syndrome). Rather one defends against the attacker. Your hatred of shah and pahlavis is your right, even if you won't be able defend it in any scholarly and analytical discussion. But to hate them blindly and not let go after several decades is beyond unhealthy and unreasonable. It is convenient to compare and throw slogans around as you seem to do. It is an easy way of avoiding intelligent discussion and a tactic well mastered by IRR (no I'm not accusing you).

To the Shah's credit...

Any leader, with an ounce of honor, would depart, if he realizes he is not wanted.

Call it what you want, but when the late Shah realized he was not wanted by the
nation, he departed. His reign was not worth the bloodshed that might have followed, one might guess he thought to himself.

Isn't this exactly what we want, expect, wish, Ayatollah Khamenei to do now?

The time is running out quick,on Mr. Khamenei, showing us an iota of dignity and honor, many of us pray, he might possess.

to listen to what I pointed out to you a while back that some of those who grew up under IRI education system even as so called opponents of the regime(which i seriously doubt) carry the pan-ommatie propaganda system fed to them at early age which is impossible to rehabilitate due to intensive branwashing by Qadesiyeh regime rethorical based education system. one look at the vocab of this sort tells me where they,re coming from even without them disclosing their IRI past since I,m the master ommatie finder.

مطمئن هستم که این ٣٠ سال گذر عمر بر شما سخت گذشت، و همچنین به کسانی مثل من  که قبل از انقلاب بچه بودنند و بعد از انقلاب باید به زور مغنعه سر میکردنند و به معلم کلاس دینی و قران با بی میلی گوش میکردنند وبعلت نداشتن علاقه مورد شماتت یه مشت ارازل و اوباش قرار میگرفتند و تحقریر میشدند. من از دورهء نسل گمشده ایرانم که بعد از گرفتن دیپلم هم مجبور شدم ایران رو ترک کنم. هر کدام از ما به نوع خود ضربه خوردیم که حتی ان ضربات را در کفه ترازو هم برای مقیاس نمیتوانیم بگذاریم. همه ما در مقابل از دست دادن یک سری آزادی های اجتماعی و مدنی، کوچ اجباری و زندگی در غربت، اندوخته ای نیز بدست اوردیم و در ممالک مختلف نیز بیکار نماندیم و با تمام سختیهایش روزگار را سپری کردیم.

 اما انانی که جزء اکثریت هستند و ٣٠ سال ظلم و بیداد را از دولتمندان متحمل شدند، تکلیفشان چیست؟ چه کسی قادر است فرزندان کشته شده ایران را به مادران و پدرانشان برگرداند؟ مادرانی که با سختی و پدرانی که با مشقت اقتصادی فرزندان خود را به جایی رسانند و دولت برای عقاید شان انها را در بند کشید و هنوز میکشد، و یا براحتی کُشت و هنوز هم میکُشد،! چه کسی جوابگوست؟ چه کسی میتواند قلب شکسته مادران به داغ نشسته در غم از دست دادن فرزندانشان را مرحم باشد؟ آیا برای لحظه ای چند خود را جای انان گذاشته اید. همان والدینی که به جمهوری اسلامی رای دادنند و نمیدانستند که سند مرگ فرزندان بدنیا نیامدهشان را امضاء میکردنند. گاهی اوقات از غربت نشینی خود با تمام سختیهایش که پشت سر گذاشتم، خودم را در کشور میزبان راحتتر از هموطنانم در ایران ( کشور خودشان) حس میکنم.

The mollahs regime was not saltanati, it was a clerical regime with a different structure than saltanti, and today it is a military regime run by the sepaah's elite with Khamenei only as a figure head.

Additionally, they don't have to kill 70 million people. Killing only a few thousands across the country will silence the opposition and buy the regime more time. It did 20 years ago when more than 8000 people were executed in only a few weeks.

The only reason they have not gone that far yet is that they consider this movement to be launched by their "khodis", i.e., the reformists. But they have no problem spilling the blood of the reformists en-masse when they feel the time has come. Just as Khomeini didn't hesitate to crush the very groups that brought him to power.

I know what type of people sepaah's elite are. I know them first hand from the first couple of years of the Iran-Iraq war. People think that they are only about corruption and mafia style business. Although this is true, but they are also about their deep and genuine faith in their version of religion, which dictates them to spare nobody when there is a threat to their ideology.

You might think that they would feel remorse shedding innocent people's blood, but you are wrong. Not only they won't feel remorse, but they will even take pride in killing what they consider as the infidel.

And if you are hoping that the world won't allow the regime to kill at a larger scale, you are wrong. Even now, the world is turning its head the other way. And Russia, China and India, Iran's new masters who are benefiting the most out of Iran's misery, are discreetely but firmly behind the regime.

Your deep hatred of the Pahlavis and your desire to equal them to the mollahs at all cost is blinding you to the realities of today's Iran. This hatred, which inflicted me as well 30 years ago, caused our country much misery and suffering. We must not repeat our mistakes.

Today, in your mind you are falsely seeing just another Pahlavi regime who is only wearing different clothes. But the Shah and the Mollahs's regimes are quite different, both politically and morally.

If people allow their blind hatred of the previous regime to thusly blind them, and see the same exact enemy, they will miscalculate that enemy, and their contributions to the green movement's tactics and strategies will become flawed and costly.

Today, we must be alert and value the lives of each of our countrymen and women in Iran. They come first, our personal feelings come last. By doing so, we can consciously find more and better solutions to overthrow this regime.

In my opinion, this regime will fall only through massive domestic strikes and civil disobedience, or through a coup by sepaah or army's green sympathizers, or a combination of both.

Demonstrations and protests will not carry this movement for too long, specially if the regime turn its guns loose. The green movement currently has a good momentum. This momentum should move it to the next level, but in the right direction, otherwise, the momentum and the past months struggles will be wasted.

I want you to know that I share the same beautiful dreams you have for a free and secular Iran. And just like you, I support a republic and would vote against monarchy. But this is not the time to flame divisions, which has been one of the life lines of this regime.

میتوانم قبول کنم که خاندان پهلوی بعلت نبودن کامپیوتر و موبایل فون خیلی مثل این خونخوران  بی ابرویی به جای نگذاشتند. حتی اگر فرض کنیم که انها کمتر از ملایان جنایت کردنند هنوز انها را تبرعه نمیکند. این مدرک به جای مانده فقط گویای تشابه رفتار حکمان دیکتاتوریست که کمی وکیفیت آن واقعا مهم نیست. دیکتاتورها به راحتی تاج و تخت خود را رها نمیکنند، شاه, ایران را به امید مدافعان غربی خود که فکر میکرد با یک گودتای دیگری همانند ١٩٥٣ او را بر سر تاج و تختش برمیگردانند، برای بار دوم فرار کرد که نقشه او نقش برآب شد، وگرنه او نیز برای نگهداشتن قدرت و تاج و تختش بیشتر میکشت.

فراموش نکنیم که دیکتاتور نیکولای چائوشسکو، که سمت رئیس جمهور و حاکم مادام العمر رومانی را داشت نیز با تمام کشتارها یی که در تاریخ بی نظیر بود، نتوانست حکومتش را حفظ کند، و با اینکه مردم رومانی را برای ۲ دهه در ترس و وحشت نگهداشت، همان مردم رژیم دیکتاتوری کمونیستی چائوشسکو را پایین اوردنند. همانطور که همه ما میدانیم ؛ او در جریان ۲۴ سال حکومت مطلقه خود انواع مشقات را به مردم رومانی تحمیل کرد، در روز ۲۱ دسامبر یک تظاهرات عظیم کارگری علیه رژیم دیکتاتوری کمونیستی چائوشسکو در مقابل مقر حزب کمونیست در شهر بخارست برپا شد. ارتش آتش گشود و بخارست به پا خواست. علی رغم سرکوب شدید، دیگر کاری ازدست نیروهای امنیتی رومانی برنمی آمد. همانطوری که کشتار بی امان مردم تهران در روز هفدهم شهریور سال ١٣۵٧ هم نتوانست مردم را خانه نشین کند. مهم نیست که حکومت سلطنتی ملایان به گفته شما چقدر مخوف است، انها میدانند که نمیتوانند ٧٠ میلیون ایرانی را به خاک و خون بکشند، و بر ٢-٣ میلیون طرفداران خود حاکم باشند.

در جریان انقلاب مردمی رومانی که ظرف یک هفته رژیم دیکتاتوری چائوشسکو را سرنگون کرد بیش از ١,١٠٠ نفر از مردم توسط نیروهای امنیتی و ارتش رومانی به قتل رسیدند، ولی بعد از فرار چائوشسکو وخودکشی وزیردفاع، ارتش به انقلابیون پیوست و چند روز بعد آن دیکتاتور جلاد و همسرش تیرباران شدند.

  و در اخر همانطوریکه تاریخ شاهد و در بر دارننده رفتار خصمانهء دیکتاتورها بوده و هست،  حکمان ظالم همه در یکنوع رفتار و سرنوشت مشترک هستند، و قدرت انها مهم نیست، مهم مردمند.

       پالون گرانبهای شاهان سلطنتی مثل درخت کریسمس دکور میشد، و پالون ملا شاهان نیز همانقدر گرانبها ست، ولی تهیه شده از پشم شتر .

I witnessed a few of these fake pro-shah demonstrations back in 1357. They were not even close to what Khamenei and his gang are doing today, both in terms of numbers and in terms of moral. Also, this similarity is a false sense of hope. The Shah fled the country, but these mollahs are not going to flee this easily.

I am telling you people, and please listen... You can even mark my words: You have NOT seen the worst of mollahs and sepaah's cruelity and brutality, not even a fraction of it.

The only way this regime will fall is through either a crippling national strike or a coup/fallout within the sepaah or artesh by green sympathizers.

The goal of the green movement should be to create an atmosphere in which both of these options become more feasible and more probable.

FYI/Pro Shah Street Demonstrations

Quite True and they did not gather too many people at the time except some thugs from south Tehran and the army distributing pamphlets in support. The IRI seems to ironically be faced with the same dillemma. Except they are much much more ruthless and determined to stop the country from revolution than the poor Shah who was ready to compromise.
