This is truly sick: The United States said Monday its invitations were still standing for Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at US embassies despite the crackdown on opposition supporters. President Barack Obama’s administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution. “There’s no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters. “We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran,” Kelly said. “We tried many years of isolation, and we’re pursuing a different path now.”

by Zendeh Baad Iran (not verified) on Wed Jun 24, 2009 05:27 PM PDTIn my view, first of all the Iranian diplomatic body does not deserve to participate in the celebration of anything with the U.S. and share a historical moment with this country. All they do, since the time of the revolution is to denounce the U.S. and chant their chants without realizing that the time has changed and people will not be fooled any more with just slogans and rhetorics. People of Iran have had it for thirty years. They now need leadership - an honest leadership. Not a bunch of thieves who are pouring the resources of our country in their own bank accounts and give the rest to the Arabs.
Second, in the honor of our young kids who are being slaughtered in the streets of Tehran (and other cities for that matter), are being thrown off the 4th story dormitories which are set on fire afterwards, are being paraded in front of the state-run TV cameras "confessing" that they were intrigued by the BBC and Voice of America to commit "all these crimes" and in solidarity with our brave countrymen, the Obama administration should rescind its invitation and refrain from any dialogue with these barbarians. I wrote to Obama and said exactly that. If you are so naiive to think that by opening a dialogue with these people, they will turn around and treat Iranians with respect and dignity, you are wrong. Zendeh Baad Iran Va Irani.
Invitation Rescinded.
by maryamk (not verified) on Wed Jun 24, 2009 05:02 PM PDTWed, June 24, 2009: An offer for Iranian envoys to attend U.S. embassy Fourth of July parties has been rescinded as the violent crackdown in Tehran continues, the White House said Wednesday. 'Given the events of the past many days, those invitations will no longer be extended,' presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

by anonymous fish on Tue Jun 23, 2009 05:06 PM PDTWhy? Not that anyone should even think that anyone from Iran is going to be there, but why not? Why not bring them in hopes of discussing the issues with them. Why not bring them and put THEM on the spot? I just don't understand why anyone would see the benefits of rescinding the invite. I'm serious. I've asked the question twice now. What is it exactly that you want him to do?
I WANT OBAMA TO CANCEL HIS INVITATION TO IRANIAN DIPLOMATS
by Anonymous on Tue Jun 23, 2009 04:33 PM PDTOBAMA'S ACTIONS AND WORDS DO NOT MATCH.
TODAY HE WAS TOUGH ON IRAN BUT NOT RESCINDING HIS INVITATION TO IRANIAN DIPLOMATS HIS ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER. HE IS LEGITIMIZING THIS GOVERNMENT BY ACCEPTING THEIR DIPLOMATS AND CELEBRATING 4TH OF JULY WITH THEM
THAT IS WRONG.
what do you mean... coward?
by anonymous fish on Tue Jun 23, 2009 03:35 PM PDTHow so? What do you expect him to do? Seriously, tell me what you want him to do? It's never enough, is it? He is supporting the Iranian people. He is heeding the words of all of you who have denounced or demonized the US for interferring in Iran's business... right? But nooooo... now he is a coward. And let me remind you, he IS the President of the US, not Iran. His priority IS Americans as well it should be. Just as the leader of Iran should be concerned about Iranians first and foremost... before the rest of the world. Come on, be fair. You want to take your vote back and vote for "bomb bomb Iran" McCain? Really? You want Sarah Palin in the White House? I find it hard to reconcile your words with real concern for the people IN Iran who are fighting this revolution, not sitting from afar IN THE US and making judgements.
OBAMA IS COWARD
by Anonymous on Tue Jun 23, 2009 02:25 PM PDTI voted for Obama and I wish I could take it back.
Obama talks tough on iran but his actions speak louder and him not rescinding his invitation is more damaging than his empty words.
He can not have it both ways.
I have called my senators, and my congressman and also emailed White House.
PLEASE PLEASE LETS JAM THOSE PHONE LINES... HOPE WANTS HOPE & CHANGE FOR AMERICANS BUT NOT FOR IRANIANS!!!
Protest on the 4th
by maryamk (not verified) on Tue Jun 23, 2009 01:06 PM PDTIf the US does not take back its invitation, we should have protests in from of the US embassies that day.
Obama is Pathetic
by t (not verified) on Tue Jun 23, 2009 01:01 PM PDTIf I could get back the vote I casted for Obama I would. The guy is pathetic and talks from both sides of his mouth.

Do you think they'll still bring the potate salad?
Sure, I'll call and email the WH to...
by Shadooneh (not verified) on Tue Jun 23, 2009 09:21 AM PDTkeep ALL channels of communications with Iran open. Right now is not the time for synthetic outrage and temper tantrums. The bigger issue is Iran and the US MUST establish formal relations with each other in order for both peoples to be able to exchange goods and ideas openly and freely.
