Congratulations to 2nd Muslim American elected to US Congress

by Q

Andre Carson, grandson of the late Democrat Rep. Julia Carson, was elected to serve the balance of her term in the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election.

She died in December 2007, after serving 11 years in the heavily Democratic district.

The younger Carson, 33, a member of the Indianapolis City Council who converted to Islam about a decade ago, will serve out the remainder of his grandmother's term through calendar 2008. He beat Republican Jon Elrod and a third party candidate with 52 percent of the vote to 44 percent for Elrod.

To: Mola Nasredeen and all anti-racists - you make us proud!!

by Anonymous-2 (not verified) on

To all the peace loving, tolerant, anti-racist, commentators on this site you just proved that you are the true humanists. You live up to the real values of what our mother land has been known for throughout centuries; tolerance and acceptance for all people regardless of race, religion, and creed!

As for all the Muslim haters I have news for you, there are about 9 million Muslims in the United States. As such, if you hate Muslims and Islam I suggest you find a space ship to take you to outer space!

Q thank you for posting this article, we are proud of having a Muslim elected to the US Congress!

Some information for whatever it's worth....

by aaj sr (not verified) on

-"29% in USA do not want Muslim in their neighbourhood"
-"49% believe Islam is inheritance of violence"
These are some quotes by Arsalan Iftekhar from "Islamic Magazine" expressed at Doha round table/debate.
Wishing Andre Carson success in "real" election next term.

I like to congratulate the people of Indiana state

by Mola Nasredeen on

At times like this,

With all the negative propaganda generated against the believers of one of the major religions in the world by right wingers and hate mongers

people of Indiana (Mr Carson's district) selected a moslem to represent them.

Isn't it great! He didn't have to change his religion like the Indian governor of Lousiana.

Why can't we have Buddhist politicians and Hindu politicians and aethiest politicians. Why every politician has to be Christian or Jewish.

I drink to this choice (yavashaki kesi nabineh).

Perhaps this link may be of helpful reference to you.

As you will see, statistics show the "widow's mandate" gets them in, but doesn't necessarily keep them there. Half of these people last one term or less. Lindy Boggs and Mary Bono are two exceptions that come to mind.

As far as Carson being filler, it bears remembering:

It's an election year. Campaigning for election or re-election has taken priority. (Not that running the country has ever been their priority)

In less than 3 months, all of Capitol Hill will be off for the summer recess. Also, there are the Democratic and GOP conventions. When they return from the recess, it will be right before the November general election. Just enough time for last minute campaigning.

In the weeks following the election, prior to January when everyone has be sworn in all over again, nothing, and I mean NOTHING will get done.

If Andre Carson does not win election in November, he will be out of DC in January. He has to campaign between now and then. That makes him not just filler, but a temp on top of it. So for now, he needs to just rent an apartment close to the Metro that offers a month-to-month lease.

Kaveh, you miss a very important point

by Anonymous8 (not verified) on

most of the people who win their dead spouse's seat actually continue to hold the seat for a very very long time. In almost every case, this is a reality. So, I don't see how he is a "filler" at all.

Kaveh Nouraee

So what?

by Kaveh Nouraee on

It is highly unlikely that Andre Carson was elected on the basis of his religious beliefs, or that it was a factor in this special election, which, by the way, only has him serving until the end of this year. To suggest that it is would also devalue the election of Keith Ellison, the first Moslem in Congress.

Carson was likely elected out of respect for the memory of his grandmother, the same way that many wives have been elected or named to complete the terms of their recently deceased husbands. In most of those instances, the widows had no work experience, let alone political experience.

This is a lame duck year, and if anything, Andre Carson will be nothing more than a seat filler for whatever commitee meetings that remain on the Congressional session calendar, and perhaps will act as a rubber stamp for his grandmother on matters for consideration in Congress that have pretty much been decided already, save the formality of an actual vote.

Haj Agha - What does "barbering ideas" mean?

by Anonymoose (not verified) on

Shooma ke baz peydat shod! I thought you were banned from this site, what happened? JJ felt sorry for you and let you back in to spew off more nonsense? I tried reading your remarks, then re-reading them by translating them into Farsi, and they STILL make no sense. Why don't you spend your time learning proper English (grammar, spelling etc.) instead of surfing the web/this site?

by Al Sefati (not verified) on

people on this site are agnostic and some are really anti Islam I am sure this news is bothersome for all of them.

And that is why I think this was a good news :)

Who cares?

Who cares about the second Muslem elected to US Congress, and why is this news on Is this site called ""? I don't think so. Write me when you have news about Iranians elected to higher office in the US. Muslims have taken over and ruined Iran already, hala nobate Amrika shod?

Zedde Islam lol

by Daryush on

Read this, I think this one deserves a comedy central special:

1) "you don't belong in the U.S. This country is about tolerance and equality." Note: This country is about tolerance

2) "Muslims and Islam belong to Iran, middle east and other backward areas of this earth." Based on this, you are not tolerant so maybe you belong to Iran. lol

This is the funniest. Thanks zeddeh eslam, I haven't laugh for a long time. needed that

Hajiagha this is not about Islam.

by Anonymouse on

This is about bashing you or me or anyone else for being Muslim.  Even if you denounce Islam they're still not going to leave you alone. This is stuck with you for ever.  So instead of cowtowing (bowing) to those who bash Islam we should look at them with a critrical eye.

Take Obama for example.  He is not even Muslim and some insist he is and are trying to scare people by saying he is a Muslim.

By the way Hajiagha, your link to your webpage doesn't work. Correct it.  I have to copy and paste it to go to your webpage.  Nice pictures of you there.  You've improved your site.

Anonymousxx: I like to announce...

by Mola Nasredeen on

Dear nashenasXX,

I don't think he is a follower of Farrakhan unless he is black.

But he maybe a follower of Barak Obama, and you know Obama has some moslem connection since his father was a moslem.

Anyway, I like to report Carson and Obama as suspicious characters.

You never know what these fanatics are planning!

As for myself, I think we should be afraid of moslems although I like to marry more than one wife and so can you.

I suggest you get in touch with Ms. far27, savab dareh.

Carson will face a strong

by Anonymousxx (not verified) on

Carson will face a strong challenge against other contenders in a May primary which will determine who runs in November for the next full two-year term in the district which covers most of the city of Indianapolis.

Carson is a Farrakhan-endorsed Far-Left Democratic candidate.

Do you support Farrakhan too?

Please publish this post. No censor.

If you are Muslim

by Zedde Islam (not verified) on

you don't belong in the U.S. This country is about tolerance and equality.

Muslims and Islam belong to Iran, middle east and other backward areas of this earth.

I and thousands of other Iranians left our homeland because of Islam. The absolute last thing I need in my second home is more of the same idiotic/stupid teachings like Hijab, women being second class citizens with less right than an 12 year old male child, no dancing, no happy music, no wine, no rights for religious minorities, etc etc etc
