NUR

Actually not

by NUR on

The scholarly consensus is that there is an older UR-Tradition older than the even the Vedas and that therefore the Vedic tradition only represents one of the many permutations of that tradition. As such the Vedic tradition is no longer accepted as being the oldest tradition. Arguably the Dravidian spirituality and the spirituality of the Indus Valley civilization is even older than the Aryan. Recent scholarship and research shows that the Shakti-Shiva dichotomy inside the Brahma, for example, has a very much Dravidian source and is pre-Aryan. Moreover worship of the Shakti as the Maha-Devi - which the Tantrikas themselves claim is the straight-line transmission for the knowledge Kundalini system as a whole - is now proven to be pre-Aryan (albeit not the Kundalini system itself; there is no evidence for its antiquity).

That said, you will find nothing in the Vedas about the chakras. The delineation of the chakra system developed alongside the development of the Tantric Yoga tradition that came long after the Upanishads, the Puranas and the Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali had been widely accepted - and note that this line of the tradition is conspicuously anti-Brahmin and thus to some degree anti-Vedic as well. It is only in the 6th-8th centuries of the common era where you find any textual material specifically discussing the chakras as we now understand it. In fact, there has also been at least two suggestions that the chakra and kundalini system in the form we know now possibly had even a foreign source in India, the suggestion being possibly Mesopotamian or even Egyptian.

Primary or secondary is not the issue here.

by BoB (not verified) on

Rig Veda is much older tradition than any other. The Chakra system was brought to Iran by Indian Physicians.
Chakras have electromagnetic fields. secondary or primary it is not the issue.
Thank you Ragu for the nice post about the Chakras.

Electromagnetic fields, tones & what the 'text' says

by NUR on

Electromagnetic waves are materially quantifiable energy fields because they can be measured quantifiably. It is a fallacy that the New Age perpetuates holding the effect as a primary evidence of the cause. It is not so. These waves are consequent, or a secondary effect, to the turning of the wheels/cakras of these subtle energies, only pointing to them by indirect implication. If the grades of causation were to be placed on a hierarchy of scale from top down, then the electromagnetism would be on the lower levels.

Indeed chakras (latifas) are aspects of consciousness. But what the New Age never defines (or ill defines) is the nature of consciousness-being (sat) itself and what its actual rooting is according to definitions understood and put into the corpus of classical (as opposed to the New Age) Tantric Yoga texts. The understanding of such texts are multidimensional and polyvalent. Let me quote from the beginning of an important one, the famous Sat-Cakra-Nirupana

"...I speak of the first sprouting shoot (of the Yoga plant) of complete realization of the Brahman, which is to be achieved, according to the Tantras, by means of the Six Chakras..."

Commentary

He alone who has become acquianted with the wealth of the six Lotuses [Pracita-sadambhoja-vibhava] of the six Lotuses [that is, the Sat-cakra...] by Maha-Yoga is able to explain the inner principles [Antas-tattva - i.e. relating to the sat-cakra] thereof. Not even the most excellent among the wise, nor the oldest in experience, is able, without the mercy of the Guru [Krp-natha, Lord of mercy, i.e. the Guru], to explain the inner principles relating to the six Lotuses, replete as they are with the greatness of Sa, Sa and Ha [Sa = Final Liberation, Sa = Knowledge, Ha = Supreme Spirit; also Brahma, Visnu and Siva respectively].

Sir John Woodroffe, The Serpent Power, New York, 1964, p. 317.

As is obvious from the above, we are dealing with both a complex metaphysical doctrine as well as an involved initiatic practice (i.e. praxis)  that cannot simply be reduced to New Age formulas regarding tones or electromagnetism. These tones in relation to each of the chakras themselves are understood as being rooted in the sabda (the metaphysical overtones) from which the process of creation unfolded from the Godhead, Brahma. In other words sound  - or the root of sound - is an imprint of the Divine Emanation from Absolute Being, Nirguna/Saguna Brahman.

To put it another way, the chakras (latifas) are the microcosmic modalities within the subtle physiology of the human body of a process evidenced in the Macrocosm that proceeds through the Mesocosmic worlds that ultimately initiates inside the Metacosm of the First Cause. A comprehensive understanding of the Great Chain of Being and the multiverse of existences descending from a First Source - here Brahma - needs to be simultaneously grasped because it is through the vehicle of this body whereby the mirror of existence is polished and so Tat Tvam Asi (Thou Art That) is witnessed in Identity. In other words, authentic realization and purfication of these chakras fundamentally entails a complete initiatic discipline (sometimes entailing years of hard work) under a qualified, authentic master of the Path. Buying a CD or tape from your local metaphysical bookshop will not cut it. This is a complete path to realization of Sat-Chit-Ananda (Being-Consciousness-Bliss) as it is the realization of what the Bible and the Qur'an speak of when they indicate that man (or woman) is created in the Divine Image, since what is Above, is also what is below!

Chakras have electromagnetic energy

by BoB (not verified) on

The chakra is a sanskrit word which means wheel which associated with rotation, and rotation has frequency.
Chakra points are electromagnetic fields.
Because chakras are not physical and are in energy format they best explained as Electromagnetic fields whiuch have strength measured in Gauss. Electromagnetic feilds have a frequency as well. Larger electromagnetic fields effect smaller ones. Chakras have color and colors also have frequency.
Each Chakra is associated with a note in Music. That is how the electromagnetic field is effected, by the vibration of a particular note or color.
There is a CD "The Healing tones of Crystal Bowls" that you can use to balance the Chakras with the tones of crystal bowls, by Renee Brodie
The frequency of musical notes, color and glands for each Chakra are as follows:
The Root Chakra note is note C color red, the prostate gland in male.
The Abdominal Chakra is note D color orange, the Adrenaline gland
The Solar Plexus Chakra is note E color Yellow, The Pancreas gland
The Heart Chakra is note F Color Green, the Thymus gland
The Throat Chakra is note G Color Blue, the thyroid gland
The Brow Chakra is not A Color indigo, the pituitary gland
The Crown Chakra is not B Color viole, The Pineal gland

The Chakras are not physical (electromagnetic wave/field is energy not matter)
The Chakras are aspects of Consciousnesss in the same way that the Auras are aspect of Consciousness. They effect the body through two major vehicles, the endocrine system and the nervous system. Each of the seven Chakras are associated with one endocrine glands, and also with a particualr group of nerves called a plexus.
When there is tension in a particular part of your consciousnes, the tension is detected by the nerves of the plexus associated with that Chakra.

The lata'if system in Iranian Sufism

by NUR on

As like the chakra system of Indian Kundalini Yoga, there is a similar system in Iranian Sufism as well, especially in the writings of Najmuddin Kubra, Najmuddin Dayyeh Razi and Al'a-Dawlih Simnani. In Sufism it is called the lata'if (sing. latifa), meaning subtleties. Several (although not all of the) Iranian Sufi orders are currently transmitting this knowledge to their students. Among them are the Uwaysi MTO Shahmaghsoudi order, the Zahabiya order of Shiraz, one sub-branch of the Qadiri order in Kurdistan, two branches of the Khaksar order and three sub-branches of the Ni'matullahi order, i.e. the Shamsiya, Kowthariya and Safialishahi.

Although the color schemes and some associations differ slightly from the Indian system, the configuration of these lata'if (according to Simnani and as amended in Iran) are the following (note that the deities in the Kundalini Yoga yantra scheme associated with these chakras are substituted with Abrahamic Prophets or Shi'ite holy figures instead):

1) Latifa ghalabiya (lit. subtlety of the mold). Unlike the physical human body, it is constituted by direct spiritual influx emanating from the Sphere of spheres, the Soul of the World (variously placed astrologically above the Heaven of Saturn), without passing through the other spheres, or of the planets or of the Elements. The Kubrawi masters call this the Adam (as) of ones soul and it corresponds to the muladhara chakra (base). Its color is determined in this tradition as being greyish black. Astrologically it is sometimes associated with the planet Venus, and some Shi'ite Sufi orders substitute Fatima (as) for Adam (as).

2) Latifa nafsiya (lit. egoic subtlety). This is the center of the uncontrolled passions and appetites and the vital, organic processes. It corresponds to both the svadisthana chakra (sacral) and manipura chakra (solar plexus) combined, and is associated with the prophet Noah (as). Its color is blue. Astrologically it is sometimes associated with the planet Jupiter. A few Shi'ite Sufi Orders substitute Musa al-Kazim (as) for Noah (as).

3) Latifa qalbiya (lit. heart subtlety). This is the center of the spiritual (as opposed to base) ego (ana'iya). It corresponds to the anahata chakra (heart), and is associated with the Prophet Abraham. Its color is red. Astrologically it is sometimes associated with the planet Mercury. Some Shi'ite Sufi orders substitute Ja'far al-Sadiq (as) for Abraham (as).

4) Latifa sirriya (lit. subtlety of the secret). It is the threshold of superconsciousness. It is the organ of intimate conversation, secret communication or confidential psalm (monajat). It corresponds to the vishuddha chakra (throat), and is associated with the Prophet Moses (as). Its color is white. Astrologically it is sometimes associated with the planet Mars. Some Shi'ite Sufi Orders substitute Husayn (as) for Moses (as).

5) Latifa ruhiya (lit. subtlety of the spirit). This corresponds with the ajna chakra (brow), and is associated with the Prophet David (as). In this scheme, as it were, there are two ajna chakras. This would be ajna 1. It's color is yellow. Astrologically it is sometimes associated with the Moon. Some Shi'ite Sufi orders subsititute Hasan (as) for David (as).

6) Latifa khafiya (lit. subtlety of the mystery). This is ajna2. It is the latifa of inspiration (ilham) and divine revelation (wahy), and occurs just above the brow but below the crown. It is associated with the Prophet Jesus (as) and its color is a luminous black. It is also sometimes associated with the astrological sign of the Sun. Some Shi'ite Sufi orders substitute 'Ali (as) for Jesus (as).

7) Latifa haqqiya (lit. subtlety of the Truth). This is the Divine Center (markaz-i-ilahi). It corresponds to the sahasrara chakra (crown). Its color is a brilliant green. All orders associate it with the Prophet Muhammad (sws). Astrologically it is sometimes corresponded with the planet Saturn.

Here you have the basic, classical scheme of the Latifas in Sufism. Each of these subtleties in turn are also associated with their own individual dhikr (mantra/repetitive divine name) that each order itself determines.

As should be obvious by now, those Iranians who are turning their backs on their own heritage and running to India to find the kernels of Wisdom need not go anywhere else but back home to the heritage of Iran. Everything that the Wisdom of India has, we have in our own Wisdom Tradition of Iranian esoteric Islam as well.
