PRESS RELEASE

President Ahmadinejad Will Face "Wall of Shame" at the UN Headquarters via Stop Child Executions

NEW YORK, NY, Sep 11, 2008  -- The President of Iran will have to get past the "Ahmadinejad Wall of Shame" -- a visual display and demonstration across the United Nations Headquarters -- before entering the opening of the General Assembly.

The rally will run from 12-2pm on September 23rd at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza (47th St. & 2nd Ave.) and feature Iranian/American groups each directly challenging Ahmadinejad on the surge in human rights abuses in Iran.

Organizing the event, Nazanin Afshin-Jam, an international human rights activist and former Miss World Canada, will lead off the line up of the "Wall of Shame" by asking: "Ahmadinejad why are you executing children?" Nazanin's actions on behalf of the children on death row in Iran began when she was told of a young girl on her namesake that was going to be executed for stabbing one of three men who attempted to rape her. Nazanin was instrumental in saving this girl and since then has been dedicated to saving more lives.

"There has been 6 children hanged this year alone in Iran and over 130 children on death row awaiting execution," said Nazanin Afshin-Jam, President and co-founder of the Stop Child Executions (SCE) organization. "While the UN legitimizes Ahmadinejad as the leader of Iran by having the door open to him at the General Assembly, the Iranian people feel betrayed by the false representation. In face of the west's obsession with Iran's nuclear development, the voices of the Iranian people have been stifled and human rights abuses have been overshadowed.

This 'Wall of Shame' demonstration is hoping to give a 'voice to the voiceless' and address the concerns of the vast majority of Iranian people who believe in a united, secular, democratic Iran based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and no military intervention on Iran," said Nazanin. Groups and individuals participating in the "Wall of Shame" demonstration include those who have faced oppression under the current regime such as women under gender apartheid, students who have been imprisoned and tortured and ethnic and religious minorities who have been persecuted. Focus will also be given to other human rights atrocities in Iran including stoning to death, dismembering of limbs, and throwing people from heights as methods of punishment.

Nazanin states, "The government of Iran cannot on the one hand expect the international community to trust its leaders with nuclear energy while it openly disregards the most basic internationally recognized child rights conventions such as the UN's International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Charter of the Rights of the Child (CRC) to which it is state party."

Stop Child Executions invites all media and the general public to join this demonstration for Human Rights. SCE will release the latest list of minors facing the death penalty, and an 8 part plan of recommendations addressed to Iran's heads of state, Parliament, Judiciary, United Nations and international community which will also be made available on the htttp://www.stopchildexecutions.com  website following the rally.

Good news

More and more of these kind of actions would bring positive results. This is more honorable than any revolutionary ideas. This kind of movements should be the way all Iranians unite, based on the ideas of Human Rights and civility that would teach our young men and women how to fight to gain a better social status.

Thank you Nazanin and all who support her in this path.

Dear SCE and Nazanin

by Anonymous8 (not verified) on

Will there be a protest against the US delegation? Because it has killed over half a million children, which according to my imperfect math skills, is just a few more than Iran. The slaughter of innocent children continues in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Just wondering if you seriously care about children or is it just a ploy.

Thanks for your time.

Brave young woman

by IRANdokht on

Nazanin is a brave young woman who is standing up for these voiceless victims against the most barbaric of regimes. I wish her the best especially I wish her to be safe from them.

I would have gone too if I lived near NY, but I believe for the rest of us who can't be there, we should sign their petition and DONATE! It's important not to let Nazanin's be the only voice out there. We can send the information to our mailing lists too. We can help her in many ways and we definitely should.

Go Nazanin!

A good idea

by News Goffer on

New York is so far away or I would show up.  I think this is an important and urgent matter and any and all people who are interested in human rights should make an effort to show up and show their support.

On a lighter note, Nazanin and her supporters should not forget their sunglasses, because what if like the last time he was at the UN, his halo shines so brightly, it paralyzes everyone and they won't be able to do whatever it is they have planned for that day?!!

Iran has a good reole model

by MeyBokhor_Manbarbesuzan on

1)  In August of 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to stay the execution of a young black male in Texas – Toronto M. Patterson. He was put to death in Huntsville, Texas by lethal injection on August 30, 2002 when Patterson was 24 years of age. (source: //www.constitution-and-rights.com/rights-4.html)

The crime for which Patterson was executed, was committed when he was 17 years of age and still a juvenile. At that time, the U.S. Supreme Court applied its earlier ruling in Stanford vs. Kentucky 492 U.S. 361 1989 where Justice Scalia concluded that there was neither "a historical nor a modern societal consensus forbidding the imposition of Capital Punishment of any person who murders at 16 or 17 years of age".

2)  The U.S. appears on a short list with only six other nations which admit to the government-sponsored killing of juveniles. Moreover, our country has executed more minors than any of these other nations. Of the many lists our government brags about being near the top of, this is one that we should be ashamed to even be on; especially with the likes of Iran, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan appearing alongside. (source: //media.www.thecowl.com/media/storage/paper493/news/2002/11/14/Commentary/Execution.Of.Minors.Makes.U.s.Inhumane-324540.shtml )

3)  Of the 50 US states, 37 now permit the death penalty, but only 18set a lower age limit (usually 18, but in five 16).This leaves 19that theoretically permit the execution of minors of any age. Recently the Supreme Court overturned the death penalty on William Thompson, then aged 15, who had murdered his brother-in-law. However, they declined to rule it was unconstitutional to execute minors under 18, thus paving the way for the possible execution of at least a hundred teenagers currently on Death  row. (source: //pb.rcpsych.org/cgi/reprint/14/9/560.pdf)

4)  It is Legal to Execute MINORS under U.S Law ?

the United States Supreme Court on June 26, 1989 ruled that the execution of minors from 16 years of age as well as those persons who are determined to be mentally retarded is not a violation of the United States Constitution

- 70-80 minors are currently awaiting execution in the U.S.
- 22 have been executed since 1976

From the American Bar Association: "The Court noted that, presently, the United States is the only nation in the world that officially sanctions the execution of minors. It then emphasized that there is overwhelming international consensus that execution of minors is against contemporary international values and norms, to show how the practice of the United States is out of step with the rest of the international community."  (source: //answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070928001150AAe1VVU)
