Delara Darabi was executed
by SCE Campaign
01-May-2009

Stop Child Executions sadly regrets to confirm that the Iranian female juvenile Delara Darabi was executed early morning today in the prison yard of the northern city of Rasht, Iran.

Delara Darabi was convicted of a alleged murder when she was 17 years old.

In violation of Iran's own laws, neither of Delara's attorney were informed of the execution. Delara was hanged only 11 days after Iran's judiciary had officially stated that Delara's execution was postponed for 2 months (//scenews.blog.com/4837662/)

Delara was the most well known Iranian minor on the death row. She was also an artist and continued her art work in prison.

In his blog Iranian attorney, Mohammad Mostafaei who represents many Iranian juveniles on the death row wrote this morning: "She was not a murderer. I swear she was not" (//mohegh.blogfa.com/post-68.aspx)

Amnesty International's Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme, Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui stated that ""Amnesty International is outraged at the execution of Delara Darabi, and particularly at the news that her lawyer was not informed about the execution, despite the legal requirement that he should receive 48 hours' notice...This appears to have been a cynical move on the part of the authorities to avoid domestic and international protests which might have saved Delara Darabi's life....This indicates that even decisions by the Head of the Judiciary carry no weight and are disregarded in the provinces" .

"Iranian leadership and judiciary must be held responsible for execution of Delara Darabi" said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam spokesperson of Iran Human Rights group. (//www.iranhr.net/spip.php?article1058) "Lack of strong and sustainable reactions from the world community is one of the main reasons why Iranian authorities continue execution of minors. Iranian authorities have learned that their violations of the human rights lead just to some verbal protests from the world community, without any practical consequences...It is the time that UN and world community show that UN’s conventions are more than just formalities" said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam who asks UN and EU to condemn Delara’s execution and put sanctions on the Iranian authorities."

"As long as the international community and United Nations do not officially and seriously hold the government of the Islamic Republic and individuals within it fully responsible for such obvious crimes against children and humanity and as long as the gross human rights violations in Iran are being ignored by the leaders and governments of the world, the notion of accepting the regime of Iran in to the world's civil community remains to be an unreal expectation and at best a slap in the face of all Iranians and the humanity. The issue of respect for human rights must be at the forefront and a precondition for all discussions with the Iran's government. As long the Islamic Republic so openly violates its own laws as well as the internationally accepted conventions in the area of human rights, they should not be trusted with any other treaties either"  said David Etebari, co-founder of the Stop Child Executions.

Stop Child Executions strongly condemns the illegal execution of Delara Darabi and demands formation of an independent international tribunal to look in to the case of Delara Darabi and to bring all those responsible for the unjust sentencing and execution of Delara Darabi to international justice.

Along with Amnesty International, SCE "does not consider her trial to have been fair, as the courts later refused to consider new evidence which the lawyer said would have proved she could not have committed the murder."

The execution of Delara Darabi brings the number of executions in Iran this year to 140.  Iran has executed at least forty two juvenile offenders since 1990, eight of them in 2008 and one on 21 January 2009, in total disregard of international law, which unequivocally bans the execution of those convicted of crimes committed when under the age of 18.

Iran does not have a legit

by John Power (not verified) on

Iran does not have a legit governemt or even any form of government and hasn't had since the mid 1970s or even further back. It is ruled by tribalists, gunmen and even drug dealers in the Eastern parts of it. It is not even a centralised dictatorship like Saddam's Iraq was. This is why the government speaks with so many voices there as they are all vying for power! The real power in Iran are shady militia movemnents like the Revolutiunary Guards (Pasdaran) and its breakaway splinter Basiji. They are not the regular army and are sometimes state sanctioned but more often than not do not consult the state for their actions as they consider themselves to be the state. Iran needs a good and strong government and help from Barack Obama to implement such.

The brutal Islamic Republic of Guilan

by JJPowerus (not verified) on

I think that the treatment of Delara by thwe Islamic Republic of Guilan was terrible. Why such states as this are tolerated to exist today is beyond me. This place is ruled by a governor who has no regard for the law and does not even consider his state to be part of Iran, a country that has not had a proper govnerment since 1978 (so it is not surprising that they did not uphold the two month review imposed by Tehran as all decisions made in IRG are from the capital city Rasht).
The world community needs to be aware of these fascist breakaway fiefdoms that rule like medieval tyrants (Iran has not had a government since 1978, Afghanistan not since 1980 and Pakistan is losing its government to separatists at present and we all know about Iraq). What has replaced these once great, tolerant and peaceful nations are Mad Max styled post apocalyptic nightmare feudal systems lead by gunmen. Unfortuately, world powers in the past have used these factions in their struggles for world dominance and it suits some to have a wek Iran etc without a proper central government. Khamenei, Ahmadinejad and the rest have no power whatsoever outside Tehran just like Karzai has none outside Kabul. The Taliban and its Iranian copycats the Basiji have too much power.

Iran needs a strong government and not a weak one that diverts attention and blame to the US for not being able to control its own borders.

Guilan is one of many states personally run by mad tyrants who virtually can do what they like. the Eastern Iranian province of Baluchistan is run by drug dealers. The Tehran regime has no control and prefers to make deals with all the warlord rulers of the local areas so as to avoid the fate of the Shah.

Well, the ignorant tyrants of the Islamic Fascist Apocalyptic Republic of Guilan told Delara's mother that we are going to execute your daughter and there's nothing you can do. Well, she should have said back: remember the Shah, the communist government of Romania, etc, etc. The day of reckoning for tyrranical separatist warlords who impose their will on entire nations is coming. This appaling act was done so as to make US-Iran diplomacy fail because the dictator of Guilan is so besotted with power and is against Iran.

Memory will live on

by OyVay (not verified) on

I learned this news, not from my American newspapers, but from the U.K. paper, The Independent. I am so, so saddened by this news - what a beautiful, young and INNOCENT woman. How dare they do this to you! Your soul will live on in heaven. I pray for the other unfortunate children who are being unfairly held. When will the United Nations actually do something about the rights of children? They are useless.

Wish You Were Here

by BegumR (not verified) on

"So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here."

How many more?

by Kaveh Nouraee on

How many more people must die before you miserable apologists get the message?

These IR lowlifes lie whenever they speak or write. They are not to be taken at their word for anything. And yet there is still a measure of support for them on various issues.

May all of you who look upon the mollahs as the legitimate government rot in hell.
