Nazanin asks rally attendees to wave at a chinese embassy
official who was filming the event from the embassy window.
Ottawa—Diverse groups whose members are suffering oppression in China are rallying together to call for an end to the Chinese regime’s human rights violations as the Olympic Games begin. Members of the Uyghur, Darfurian, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Burmese, and Falun Gong communities joined Reporters without Borders and leading politicians and activists at a protest in front of the Chinese embassy in Ottawa on August 7.
“We’re gathered here today to show solidarity with the people of China. We stand behind their human rights,” said rally host Nazanin Afshin-Jam, a former Miss World Canada and president and co-founder of the Stop Child Executions organization.
The groups demanded that China honour its promise to respect human rights, a condition upon which it was awarded the Games in 2001.

Dear Nazanin
by Hans Graebel (not verified) on Tue Aug 19, 2008 02:25 AM PDTI believe that your support of all of these causes is admirable. Nevertheless, I also am of the opinion that you should narrow down the causes to only a few that are near and dear to your heart.
The SCE Campaign is a wonderful thing that you are pursuing. However, I am not so sure whether your energy and time is best utilised with the campaing regarding the conditions in China.
As you know, there are already many celebrities such as Richard Gere, etc. who are very active in that area. Perhaps a more mature approach in the causes that you are presently serving would bring more results.
Finally, I want you to know that many people are extremely proud of you regarding the sacrifices that you are making in making other people's lives better. We all know that you are a young individual, and that you could instead be following self-serving goals. The fact that you chose not to, is admirable in and of itself.
Again, thank you for all of your good work. Let us know if we can be of any help.
