Fire in Cinema Rex in Abadan - crime of century.

It was a hot summer night in 1978 as I was driving from the city of Rasht toward Tehran. The breeze of Caspian sea was stimulating  my cheeks creating sense of joy and happiness. All of the sudden I heard the shocking news from state radio about Cinema Rex in Abadan. The news was about 500 children and families who were burned to the ashes inside Cinema. Apparently, some people set a fire and locked the doors from outside so no one could escape. People inside turned to the ashes in about 2 hours. The first thing came to my mind  "Who did it"? Just few days after incident, the rumors spread around Tehran. The rumors were blaming Shah and his secret police S.A.V.A.K. Mullah's propaganda machine was working 24/7 sending flyers all over blaming shah for that horoble crime saying shah wanted to make oppositions look bad so he burned Cinema by his secret police S.A.V.A.K. I was incensed at shah. Kayhan news papers published picture of the families who were outraged and angry at shah at it's front page. Cinema Rex fuel the flame of the revolution and brought thousand and thousand people to the streets. it was outrages and tramatic experience that shocked our nation in those days. Message to shah and his administration was crystal clear..." Mekosham, Mekosham an keh baradaram kosht"....means, "I will kill whoever killed my brother". I decided to fight with shah's regime till the end so I took an active part in the revolution. One day, I found myself laying down on the ground in the front of the Tehran university. The army bullets were contstandly travelling over my head. I would have taken chance to get shot if I wanted to get up. I was like a frozen corpse. I stil have flash back from that day. I was about to get killed.

Years later, we learned that was mullah's trick. They mater minded the plan and blamed it on Shah.  I  was also a victim of mullah's propaganda and I was about to lose my life for that. What a big mistake our nation did. The whole revolution was hoax and deception.

Just few months ago the monkey who calls himself "Iran president" had a speech in U.N. He was blaming the U.S for master minding 9/11. As I was listening to his speech,  I started to laugh. "The same trick this criminal gang used 33 years ago to defeat shah's gov" I whispered to myself. Now, they are using for American people. Back then it was Cinema Rex in Abadan versus Iranian government. Now it is Twin Tower versus American government. Back then they killed about 500 innocent people. Now they killed thousands. But there is one big difference,  Back then audiances was Kocholoo Siavash,  Now audiances are westerners.  It worked back then and I was naively betrayed. But this time the audiance is not Koochooloo siavash. they are westerners. Much smarter. They won't buy this none sense.

I remember people were upset, and insisted to know who did it. After an intensive investigation, they arrested one person who confessed, but because of the unstable and revolutionary situation in the country, and pwer struggle, we did not hear what happened to him. Those days, grouhakhaye leftist, Islamist, and revolutionary were easily openning army baraks, and distributing weapons among the people to fight whoever they didn't like!

Who did it? What a Joke question.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

You see a child molester and time and again he his found guilty of molesting children.

Then the molester comes out and is given a group of children to watch over, again a child is molested.

Is it smart to speculate that it could have been someone with zero history of such crimes?

After 33 years of experience at the hands of the IRI, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who's dNA and finger prints are all over Cinema Rex, ask the peole of Tehran, ask the people in Bagdad,

who they think did it and why?

The child molesting, rapist regimes leaders had a hand in it, No question.

I feel the comments posted regarding who did it should be kept on file, because some peoples answers, allegations and explanations give all of us true insight in to their thoughts and a good reflection of their character.

More than anything else, peoples answers to this demystified subject are a reflection on them at this point in Irans History.

It's not about

by maziar 58 on

who have done it.

How about googling it.

There should be whole bunch to read about it pro or con and you can make your own conclusion.

sadly it happened over 30 yrs ago and nothing will change the outcome.

cinema Karoon in ahwaz had to pull out the Italian movie with zaoudi araya "Gonah karane jazireye behesht" and close the karoon for the fear of being next.
My personal opinion is done by mollahs.

I like to have the solid evidence for the sake of knowing the truth. I don't want to behave like a low life illetrate Mullah and accuse anyone and everyone with bogus claims.

Cinema Rex is our St. Valentine's day massacre

by bahmani on

The film "Gavaznha" (the Deer) by Masoud Kimiaie starring Behrouz Vossoughi was playing at the Rex at the time of the fire. The Rex was in a south Tehran poorer district neighborhood. What we do know for sure was that the doors had been locked from the outside by someone. So it was no accident.

Given that Gavaznha was a somewhat controversial film that just barely passed the Shah's government censors, and was allowed to be shown, there could have been SAVAK elements behind the fire. At the time the poorer sections were beginning to rise up. Although how a cinema fire would send a warning message is beyond my imagination.

The conspiracy theories are that SAVAK wanted the fire to look like the Mollahs did it, and the other one is the Mollahs wanted it to look like SAVAK did it.

Both sides had motive, and both had the ability to do it, and no one has come forward admitting anything. So it is probably inconclusive and we may never know.

Again, why and how anyone could see that this act would offer them the slightest gain or advantage is beyond my ability.

I was shocked when I heard it.

by omeedvar on

In Summer of 1978, I was in France. It was a hot and humid summer. I noticed some Iranian students with long beard, and girls with black Islamic dress arguing with other students against Shah, even though most of them were there on government scholarships. My brother called from Iran, and asked me to go see his son in England, who had just had a baby. He wanted me to see how they and the baby are doing. So I went to England.

As soon as I arrived there, my nephew told me about Cinema Rex.  He said the Shah and Savak have done it. I was shocked and sad to hear that, but my first response was, it does not make sense. Why does shah want to do something like that to agitate people against himself and his government? Before my trip, everything was quiet in Iran. My nephew was very upset, and did not change his mind. I was surprised to see so many Iranian students in England and France   politically charged and active against the Shah.

When I returened to Iran, I noticed that the incidence of Cinema Rex, and propaganda that shah has ordered it, has upset people.   Gradually street demonstrations in the South of Tehran started, and later expanded. Although, the investigation showed Islamist agents were responsible for Cinema Rex fire, but under anger and  revolutionary fever, people could not think clearly, and within a few months, as we all know, the so called Revolution succeeded!

You might be totally right but unfortunately I have not seen a solid proof but speculation. It is reasonable to assume the Mullahs did this and believe me they are the only animals capable of such atrocities but still that that is not a proof.

Just one fact

by RostamZ on

No one really investigated Cinema Rex fire throughly and no one exactly knows who to blame. I personally believe Shah never had the guts to do such a thing but I also don't have the proof he didn't. Do you have any new information that you can share with us?
