When you consider the uprisings and perpetual conflicts which have taken place in North Africa and the Middle East you would think it would be the last area on earth where life has value. The daily roadside shootings, market bombings, extra-judicial killngs and sectarian violence have made people desensitised to the loss of life. When a bomb explodes in a Baghdad market killing hundrerds in one day which the media reports as the "deadliest attack yet" over and over again the loss of human life just becomes numbers. All just faceless victims of Muslims murdering their own brethren, compatriot and human being. Any one who has watched a ghastly decapitation video by Islamic terrorists makes you wonder why the sanctity of human life means nothing. 

Yesterday, captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit walked a free man after five years of captivity. The currency for this exchange was 1,000 Palestinians, some of them reported to be terrorists charged and implicated in kidnapping and mass murder. It seems the only country which places value to the life of its own citizens is Israel. Ironically, it is the same country which punished Gaza and whose rockets killed Palestinian men, women and children indiscriminately in December 2009. Arguably, there may be a racists undertone in the exchange: Israel believes one Jewish life is worth the equivalent of 1,000 Palestinians attracting accusations against Israel of racial superiority. Whether this is true or not is another debate altogether; what is astonishing is the high price Israel is willing to pay for a single life of one of its own even though it has been accused of terrorising its Palestinian enemies. 

In contrast the Islamic Republic - the bastion of terror which kills several hundred of its own citizens every year. Men, women are kiled and not even minors are spared. Young men and women, the same age as Gilad are kidnapped by the IR Revolutionary guards and taken into an unknown location before being raped and killed. Israel will toil night and day-ready to neotiate with its arch enemy to release a single solitary Jewish life. It will give up some of the worst prisoners for that single commodity it values the most: A Jewish life. In stark contrast, Khomeini's minions walked into a prison and randomly picked 5,000 young men before murdering them and dumping their corpse in a mass body. Most of these men did not even have a trial and were killed based on a hunch by Khomeini. 

I envy Israel. I envy Israel that it places a high value for the life of one of its own while we pathetic Iranians gather to gloat over a 17 year old boy being strung up on the gallows as he is slowly strangled to death. What a pathetic nation we have become.
