Indefinite military detention of Americans became the law of the land Saturday, as President Barack Obama signed a defense bill that codified that authority, even as he said he would not use it.
"President Obama's action today is a blight on his legacy because he will forever be known as the president who signed indefinite detention without charge or trial into law,” said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Obama has not brought the change that voters were looking for in 2008. He won’t bring us that change if he’s re-elected in 2012, either. Obama has continued and expanded George W. Bush’s attack on the Constitution, and there’s no reason to believe that he’s going to change his ways. There is no difference between him and the Republican candidates with the exception of Ron Paul ..... I am not a Republican but I do not mind to vote for Ron Paul ... I certainly hope for Obama to be kicked out of the office. He has betrayed his voters especially all those young college kids who voted for him ..

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Tue Jan 03, 2012 01:13 PM PSTTo be honest I do not see how this passes constitutional review. But with the Supreme Court we got anything will get approved. If we get a real Supreme Court they will throw it out.
But to get real it happens all over the world. It used to be in the dark now it is in the open. I don't like it and hope to see it thrown out. It will make is harder to say America is a free and just nation. Politicians shot themselves in the foot.
That the US political system allowed this....
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Tue Jan 03, 2012 12:53 PM PSTNot Unlike the NAZI's SS that could kill Germans, what a filthy system of Governance. This makes the USA worse than the terrorist countries it says it opposes, because in those countries as in the rest of the world, these acts are illegal, its just that IRI goons don't follow their own laws and their is no enforcement due to the corruption of the authorities. In the USA's case it is such a corrupted country that it can pass laws like this. You won't be seeing any cranes here, the purpose is not to terrorize the American public, but to get rid of the Americans in Secrecy they feel are their enemies. The USA doesn't have to make any case that the Americans they feel are enemies can not be dealt with by existing laws.
Why the need for secrecy and NO public knowledge at any point in time regarding the Americans they kill? We need George Carlin to help heal us, land of the free Home of the Brave Most Idealistic Country In the World. If it requires a uniform, it’s a worthless endeavor.

by Joubin on Tue Jan 03, 2012 11:39 AM PSTYour statement demonstrates a regrettable lack of understanding about the principles that inform the constitution and government of the United States of America.
We have something called Courts of Law that are designed to determine guilt and apply judicial redress of crimes committed.
"any President Obama or Ron Paul will be faced with challenging dilemmas and be forced to make radical decisions contrary to their election manifestos."
It is not "election manifesto" that he shat on It was the Constitution and our Civil Rights.

I would like to add a word
by Simorgh5555 on Tue Jan 03, 2012 03:01 AM PSTI would like to add a word of caution. While the bill and all that it entails appears to be an attack on civil liberties and the US constitution bear in mind that Obama may be privy to security infirmation which is not in the public domain. None of us have the access to sensitive intelligence infirmation which Obama has and therefore go easy on the guy. The type of warfare the US and thE Al Qaida and its off sboots are involved in do not have any clear rules of engagements and demarcations. Terror and Counter Terror are exactly alike and any President Obama or Ron Paul will be faced with challenging dilemmas and be forced to make radical decisions contrary to their election manifestos. Once you are in office you will honestly wish sometimes you never took the job in the first place once you are given a set of information and the weight of the world is on your shoulders to make a decision.
Its like politicians who are forced to make spending cuts. They came into office with a promise not to make cuts in public spending and then when you actually see the amount of the public deficit you are a different politician altogether. You can't remain the same. Circumstances will change you.
Welcome back SK...

The Hilarious thing about the USA is that by electing
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Mon Jan 02, 2012 07:54 PM PSTObama, they elected a constitutional law professor. And with his impressive Harvard Law Degree he became the worst abuser to which Americans now are saying "Oh No You Can't!" At least Americans are aware that their government doesn't give them real choices, but manipulation and deceit since this president has accelerated Unlawful practices. Good Luck on being able to sue the government if you have legitimate grievances. Noam Chomsky ridicules America better than anyone I know. //rt.com/news/obama-torture-change-killing-10...
Now the US Military for the first time can perform its antics on Americans, Mass detentions etc. Well Done Barry. Acting Lawfully? Who cares!
The Important point I wish for ALL IRANIANS TO GET AS WE WATCH THE USA is that we need to wait a lot longer before we can ever find a Republic System that can prove itself in terms of Making Democracy work as well as the European Kingdoms have. Enjoy the video clip. : ( despite its meaning

Happy New Year Soosan Khanoom
by Faramarz on Mon Jan 02, 2012 04:54 PM PSTWelcome back and you were greatly missed.
Although Obama was placed in a tough political spot when he was presented with this bill by the Congress (sign or veto the bill and face the consequences), he used the signing statement to provide assurances that he will interpret the law properly.
“My administration will not authorize the indefinite detention without trial of American citizens...Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a Nation. My Administration will interpret section 1021 in a manner that ensures that any detention it authorizes complies with the Constitution, the laws of war, and all other applicable law.”
But to be sure, the country has been on the slippery slope since 9/11 and the civil liberties have been taking hits.
Note: Signing statement is an act by the President that while he signs a bill by the Congress into law, he writes on that bill how he intends to interpret that law and gives himself latitude. This trick has been used by the recent presidents and has yet to be challenged in courts.
What's the big fuss?
by Hooshang Tarreh-Gol on Mon Jan 02, 2012 04:49 PM PSTSo what?!?! As George Bush used to say: " If you don't do anything wrong, you don't need to worry about anything!!!"
Sometimes I wish, I lived in the US. Imagine getting illegaly detained and held up, just how much you could sue them for in a court of law!
Is the Dark Humor coming through or do I need a song to add to this?

Our government can now
by Soosan Khanoom on Mon Jan 02, 2012 03:30 PM PSTOur government can now imprison any American it says is a terrorist for as long as it wants, without having to prove anything in court. Said Sen. Al Franken (D-MN): “What we are talking about here is that Americans could be subjected to life imprisonment. Think about that for a minute. Life imprisonment. Without ever being charged, tried, or convicted of a crime. Without ever having an opportunity to prove your innocence to a judge or a jury of your peers. And without the government ever having to prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. I think that denigrates the very foundations of this country.”
I was hoping that one day Iran follows America's democratic laws not knowing that it is the U.S that is walking in the footsteps of IRI and patterning its laws... !!!!
well we are used to it anyway : )
If the President is given absolute power by law.....
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Mon Jan 02, 2012 03:57 PM PSTAnd then uses it to detain, torture and kill Americans, does that make him a leader of a democracy, I mean Is that the shinning becon "American So-called Democracy" represents In the world? Isn't the actual use of absolute Power a quality associated with other forms of government, like dictatorships? I just adore the Candid & High Integrity based nature of our Late Shah, he told the BBC, you guys write too much and talk too much of your so called democracy and don't work enough. Truth, Integrity, Wisdom. Khoda Biamorze.(of course he was ridiculing the deceitful and manipulative nature of their concerns for human rights and democracy/ which were his own dreams for Iran)
Shah was great at answering history and by that I mean the hypocrits that accused him of dictatorship. He was asked in another interview if by having "so much" of the powers he had he wouldn't be guilty of causing a folly of grandeur. LOL .... so his response which was no big deal back then, but today a historical Gem was, Yes It might be possible to commit folly, but lets look at my real record, I never invaded Iraq, nor did I invade Afghanistan. Khoda Biamorze just for that timely historical response.
On Hardwork, maybe the shah worked too hard for too many in his country, upon reflecting on some of his peoples actions against him for his efforts.
