What Do Women Want?

What do women want?

 

I want a red dress. 
I want it flimsy and cheap, 
I want it too tight, I want to wear it 
until someone tears it off me. 
I want it sleeveless and backless, 
this dress, so no one has to guess 
what's underneath. I want to walk down
the street past Thrifty's and the hardware store 
with all those keys glittering in the window, 
past Mr. and Mrs. Wong selling day-old 
donuts in their café, past the Guerra brothers 
slinging pigs from the truck and onto the dolly, 
hoisting the slick snouts over their shoulders. 
I want to walk like I'm the only 
woman on earth and I can have my pick. 
I want that red dress bad.
I want it to confirm 
your worst fears about me, 
to show you how little I care about you 
or anything except what 
I want. When I find it, I'll pull that garment 
from its hanger like I'm choosing a body 
to carry me into this world, through 
the birth-cries and the love-cries too, 
and I'll wear it like bones, like skin, 
it'll be the goddamned 

dress they bury me in. 

 

Kim Addonizio's poem, "What Do Women Want'"  through its harsh and honest style explores the stereotype that a woman must endure in today's western society.  By employing the literary devices, Addonizio is able to convey the message that what women really want is to be understood. The red dress is being used as a metaphor, as a right , and as a weapon aiming at the eyes of today's western society that has been claiming to be the women's right advocate.  

I love and adore this simple but powerful poem and the message that it delivers.

It was a joke.  I wouldn't like to clarify the joke further in such a wonderful blog.  Perhaps, another time.  I am sure you will figure it out by yourself soon alone.  You will discover that's not too difficult though it is sometimes time-consuming.

And I loved how you expressed it.

I can confirm your findings. Before marriage, I traveled often and sleeping in a tent was the norm. Now, even motels wouldn't cut it, as HOTEL is one of the essentials and the only place for a tent is the closet.

As for the kids, we have three now (one looks just like your avatar, Mishgah) and they are cared for more then when I was a baby and by my mother :) But we loved them and glad they are happy in our home.

Nevertheless, if one finds his/her match, then it can be an enhancement of one's life even if you have to give up some of the past way of life

Thanks for the article ....  it is like 9 pages !!!

Sounds interesting and i probably will read it but these studies are going to yield different results if the participants were from other regions of the world... here it seems they are all from North America ... 

I let you know once I read it and that is if it is not another failed research with messed up results ...

Most young women would want to start a family. That is result of evolution. However women are different and they get to that family (or most of them) in their own ways, what to  do after having kids is also dependent on what type of personality they have. No two women want exact same things.

     I guess everyone knows what men really want ;-)

     I suggest we try to limit the search domain when it comes to asking want women want. I mean we already know bunch of things every woman wants/loves: Attention, love, money, shopping, kids....

    I guess the better question to ask is what women want beyond the aforementioned! Or rather we can ask do women really kinow what they want?!
