Between the lines

by anglophile on

Thank you for publishing this letter. It betrays clearly how the embittered demagogue who was supposed to be a nationalist leader was putting his personal grudges and interests ahead of the national interests, precisely the way he performed during his days in office.
1.
Instead of encouraging the spoiled brat who must have gained some education, thanks to his fathers amassed wealth, to return to his country to serve the nation, the demagogue advises him to stay away and work for the foreigners.  No wonder the people of Iran had seen his true selfish colours and shunned him.
2
. Mosaddegh's open redicule of the Shah's land reforms speaks of his own former alliances with the big land owners (Qashaqi's'as and Zulfagharis to name but a few) as well as his personal and family ownership. Those who calim the he was not supported by the so called landed gentry take note.
3.
To be exiled in one's own estate and living in the confines of one's own estately comfort must be the most lenient sentence one could hope for. And still the old demagogue expected to be allowed to travel freely and hold meetings with his former cronies - previlidges he did offer to his predcessor Qavam (in fact he passed a law to confiscate and auction Qavam's properties).
4.
It is clear that there were no restrctions on the old demagogue's family to visit him and travel to Europe and enjoy comfortable holidays. Clearly they never posed a threat to national interests as they must have realised that the demagogue had lost his marbles!! This letter was very revealing indeed.
