Dr. Jack Kevorkian, nicknamed "Dr. Death" for his controversial advocacy of assisted suicide in the cases of the terminally ill, died early Friday morning, reports his local paper, the Detroit Free Press.

He was 83, suffered kidney and heart ailments and was not placed on life support, his attorney, Mayer Morganroth, told the paper.

Last year, Al Pacino won an Emmy for his portrayal of Kevorkian in HBO's You Don't Know Jack.

In all, the trained pathologist assisted some 130 terminally or chronically ill patients in their deaths during the 1990s. In 1999, he was convicted of second-degree murder after sending a videotape of himself euthanizing a terminally ill man to CBS's 60 Minutes. His medical license was also revoked.

At Kevorkian's side in Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., at the time of his own death was his niece, Ava Janus, and Morganroth, who told the Free Press: "It was peaceful, he didn't feel a thing."

I suggest you assemble a Lliving Will" if you already don't have one. That way, your wife will not have to deal with Zealots, Unlimited when it comes to your fate.

That by filming his assistance, he brought more ill to himself, but also brought up the issue and the conversation into each of us living room. I think bringing the idea of a compassionate assisted suicide into a mainstream discussion, he has done more good then keeping it a secret and helping two or few more.

Hopefully, one day soon this chain of religion on our neck is broken and people can live free, even in this society.

P.S. my wife is well aware of my wishes in this regard and what to do. I do not wish to be eat my food thru a straw, be carried to a toilet on a regular bases or breath thru a machine. Also, all reusable parts are to be donated as indicates on my D.L.

He did not pursue his cause very effectively

by Cost-of-Progress on

instead he chose to film his assisted suicide sessions which gave the States the evidence to go after him, and put him in jail. In any case, he did assist a bunch of folks who would have otherwise suffered unncessary agony due to stupid religious doctrine, and we believe this is secular democracy. The church and the clergy still weild a lot of power in these so called secular democracies.

Who said there is no movement wiht assisted suicide in Iran

by Bavafa on

Many have been assisted in the Iranian jails with "suicide" and one can argue Haleh Sahabi and her father were part of those who received such assistance.

I wonder why there has never been an Iranian movement in favor of assisted suicide....and then I think maybe it has something to do with our historical experiences.....
