The two Iranian filmmakers have also been banned from film-making for twenty years. Various online petitions and open letters have been circulating in support of their release, including one by fellow Iranian filmmaker Rafi Pitts.
Facets, who distributes some of Panahi's work, is holding a free screening of Panahi's film The Circle on Sunday, January 16 at 1 p.m. It was banned by the Iranian government but won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2000. "Why is it considered dangerous in Iran? Because it argues that under current Iranian law, unattached women are made to feel like hunted animals," Roger Ebert notes.
Guest speakers to be announced will be present during the screening to provide context and updates concerning advocacy efforts.
Facets is located at 1517 W Fullerton Ave.

Dangerous Game....
by Aliafandi on Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:47 AM PSTThis behavior is extremely dangerous. As mentioned, young unattached women in Iran are treated like animals. Under current system, They have no rights to exercise and any statement to even imply any rights will be silenced with harshest punishment.
You have to wonder why a film or movie makes a tyrant feel threatened? they must be scared. Their decision has already popularized this film and will cause more and more people in Iran to want to see it. Great pubilicity by the tyrants. Perhaps more and more of these types of media can keep them occupied enough to lose control.
Unfortunately, dealing with these people who have no logic or conscience or resepct for human lives, is extremely difficult. You have to bring yourself to their level in order to deal with them. Or find the ones who can do it for you.
As far as overturning the prison sentence, it is very easy. All its needed is money. Lots of it. Get it to the right person in Iran and they will have it over tunred. This is their legacy, bribe, cheat and more of it.
