While I have no solid concrete proof that she is Iranian her first and last name appear to strongly suggest so.

Her name is Mezhgan Hussainy.   I figure the first name ought to be Mozhgan.  No one in the Arab or Islamic world names their daughters Mozhgan other than Iranians.

Before you get all excited or depressed about the whole thing, you need to realize a few things.  This is an engagement for a man in his upper 40's. So until they actually get married is some ways, maybe none.  THe engagment could be a Simon Cowell way of calming his new fiance down.

Second: remember that someone of Simon Cowell's stature would most definetely sign a prenuptual agreement.  He wouldn't want what befell his countryman's Paul McCartney's fate- who paid up the wazoo to settle his divorce.

Finally, I on my part will personally contact the Iranian President's office to see if this family has any assets in Iran and prior history, since story could possibly explode.

See news article below

(Newser) – Ornery American Idol judge Simon Cowell once called marriage an “outdated contract,” but apparently he does have a soft spot: He proposed to girlfriend of six months Mezghan Hussainy on Valentine’s Day, the Sun reports. “Simon's definitely engaged,” says a friend. “I've never seen him so happy.” The Daily Mail, meanwhile, reports that he proposed to the make-up artist, 14 years his junior at 36, weeks ago.

Either way, Hussainy is now sporting a $389,000 diamond ring. Cowell recently called her “the one” in a TV interview, audience members say, adding that, “I think I need to have little Simons around.”

There are some people who are unfortunately unaware of the make up of the area. The assume that anyone with a "Persian" sounding name must be from Iran proper. That is obviously not true. There are many nations whose cultures are inter-related wit Iran. In fact both Afghanistan and Tajikistan also Uzbekistan; Turkmenistan; Northern Azarbaijan and other places were once united with Iran.

By language and culture Iran; Afghanistan and Tajikistan are very close and highly related. I am able to speak to a Northern Afghan or Tajik as easily as a British speaks to an Australian. So it is not a big surprise when people mistake one for another. Specially if you don't hear the accents. The accents definitely are a give away since they are very different. But then we have plenty of different accents in Iran.

First, look below your posting.  Many of us know she is not Iranian

Secondly, to us, this was just a piece of news.  We have much bigger things to worry about.

Thirdly, look at who is doing the posting and who his references are (the office of the president of IRI!).

Now please stop laughing.

U IRANIANS MAKE ME LAUGH !

by mezhda on

first of all I'm not iranian, I just opened an acct so I can leave a comment. What is it with u guys assuming anyone with a Farsi name is from Iran?

My name is Mezhda and names such as mezhgan & mine are some of the most common names not only for us afghans but also in countries like Tajikstan.

Mezhgan is Afghan American and her roots are in Kabul not anywhere in Iran so no need for u to call and confirm with ur president !

Lastly, good for her, mezhgan has worked hard and deserves all the happiness in her life.
