"It appears to be politically motivated to silence any future peaceful and legitimate criticism of Israel's brutal practices," he said. "This was nothing but a peaceful and symbolic protest of the Israeli Ambassador at UCI. It was a reflection of a growing worldwide campaign by human rights activists to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine and their racism toward the Palestinian people."

Why does every thing
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Wed Jun 16, 2010 03:28 PM PDTyou guys say have to do with Israel? Now the answer to all of this is totally obvious isn't it? If dear Muslims pulled their heads out of their stomach; honestly they would see it.
Yes, you get in trouble if you go off on Israel. Why: because they played their cards right. No suicide bombing; brilliant PR and lots of campaign donations.
Yes, Muslims are not just "not loved"; they are hated with a passion. Why: because of the way they act. They intimidate people in the most primitive way; suicide bomb; stone people and act basically like primitive savages. No sugar coating it.
Now if they would ever evolve beyond the neanderthal (my apologies neanderthals) maybe they would get some respect. But I suspect they won't.
If it was not their forum,
by LoverOfLiberty on Wed Jun 16, 2010 03:20 PM PDTIf it was not their forum, then they didn't really have the so-called "right" to speak there.
Rights, in a civilized world, come with responsibilities.
And, those students could have found other forums in which they could speak about what the invited speaker said...such as this website, for example.
So no, they didn't have the "right to free speech," as you assert they did in that forum, since their actual speech had encroached upon the invited speaker's right to speak.
And I think the University was acting within their right to punish this student group if said activity was premeditated with the purpose of encroaching upon the invited speaker's right to speak.
Keep things in perspective!
by MM on Wed Jun 16, 2010 03:10 PM PDTMohammad Rashidi, a Tehran Politechnic student, held up the handmade sign, “Fascist president, Polytechnic is no place for you” during Ahmadinejad’s speech with no interruptions or shouting. He was arrested tortured and almost got the death penalty for insulting a dictator. Also see Omid Sharifi Dana, and many others who pay dearly for speaking out.

Good cause wrong way
by kasra84 on Wed Jun 16, 2010 02:40 PM PDTThey didnt even let the audience hear them out with their clapping and shouting. Their voices should have been heard in order for them to become a strong grass-root force of political influence but unfortunetly their actions was not so smart...
As Sheila K wrote:
"That was an orchesterated effort that was not so smart. They should'v
waited for Q&A and even if they only had one chance to speak or ask
questions, that would have made more impact than rioting. That room was
predominately Jewish and they should've respected that. I don't see any
Jews getting up when Pro Palestinian Muslims speak up at Universities.
This was NOT acceptable and their suspension was just only not for one
year! Next time be SMARTER!

Really, Abarmard, Really?
by Onlyiran on Wed Jun 16, 2010 02:18 PM PDTSimple: A reporter could get in lot of trouble (mostly kicked out of his/her job) for reporting openly about Israel. This is the only reason that no one dares to cross that line.

NOT so smart but embarrassing!
by Sheila K on Wed Jun 16, 2010 02:11 PM PDTNo matter what ones thoughts are about Israel and their recent actions, UCI's Muslim organization should've known better than react the way they did and interrupt Michael Oren's speech. That's just show of anger.

Abarmard
by cyclicforward on Wed Jun 16, 2010 01:54 PM PDTI did not see the film, there is something wrong with my computer. I do not believe that they are targeted for arrest or they have been treated any differently. If that is the case, then they can elevate the action of UCI to the courts.
One thing that I agree with you is the fact that Muslims are not a loved minority anywhere these days. I also have listened to Mr. Oran on TV a few times and definitely he reminds me of IRI ambassadors across Europe. The guy is simply divisive. Having said all of that I also have seen the Muslim group across campuses and they are just as intimidating as the JDL.
In this country the neo conservatives are absolutley in love with israel. I however don't think the general U.S. population has too much love for them one way or another.
The students spoke
by Abarmard on Wed Jun 16, 2010 01:41 PM PDTThen raised their arm and left without any resistance. What part was a thug? Did you see the film? Be fair.
There are no debates allowed when it comes to the issue of Israel, otherwise there would be many debates going on in many areas including campuses across the US. Similar to Iran for its policies, US will react harshly to those who do not follow this law.
Simple: A reporter could get in lot of trouble (mostly kicked out of his/her job) for reporting openly about Israel. This is the only reason that no one dares to cross that line.
A politician must say goodbye to his career if he dares to discuss Israeli government actions "openly".
You doubt that?
You can discuss and disagree
by cyclicforward on Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:43 AM PDTAnd you will not have any problem but you can not be a thug. Civility is the order of the day.
