by Batman (not verified) on Sat Oct 27, 2007 02:02 PM PDTMy caption would read:
Shah: "Farah, you know, the real leader of the monarchists is Shaban-e bimokh. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here plundering the country."
Farah: "That says a lot about us... our leader is an illiterate thug."
Shah: "I hope my son [nim-Pahlavi] could grow up to be just like him.'
get over it.

Shahanshah, Colonel
by Rosie T. (not verified) on Sat Oct 27, 2007 01:00 PM PDTActually it is my understanding that Mohammed Reza challenged the Mullahs and the entrenched aristocracy, appropriating their lands to redistribute them to the people during his White Revolution. It was his poor planning and bureaucratic ineptness that caused the White Revolution's failure, not his intentions. Mohammed Reza was a complex man, as we all are. His legacy is likewise complex. I believe it is inaccurate to characterize him as indifferent to the plight of the people, although he made many mistakes. Torture being among them.
However, it has to be remembered that young Mohammad Reza did not display a ruler's temperament and was thrust into a situation that was way over his head due to his father's serious but comprehensible political miscalculations. Reza Khan was no puppet and he wished to defy both the British who installed him and the Russians who had trained him in the Cossack Brigades by allying himself with Germany during World War II. He was not a sophisticated man and I do not believe he understood the egregiousness of this error in "Western" eyes. So he was deposed and his weak, playboy son installed. Mohammad Reza did not become a tyrant until the forces he allowed to flourish in the first years of his reign took away all his power. Mossadegh bluffed him into having to sign over control of the army. When power was restored to Mohammad Reza, he became a tyrant, no doubt due to his great sense of humiliation at feeing himself castrated in carrying out the legacy of his all-consuming father.
The Pahlavis engineered the infrastructure and class system of the modern state. The Mullahs largely preserve this intact, with their inevitable disgusting variations on it. The democracy that will eventually come to Iran will rest on the shoulders of Pahlavi social and industrial engineering, Mossadegh's idealistic visions, and yes, whatever it is that the Mullahs have wrought in their backlash against the Pahlavi's Persianization policies. I hope it will happen without foreign intervention. Foreign intervention has been the scourge of Iran.
Colonel, I did not know it was Mohammad Reza's birthday when I posted my caption to this photo. If I had, I would not have posted it. I am sorry. I would like to know what monarchy means to you, what hopes you have for the future of Iran, and how and why you can possibly think that a military alliance with the neocons would serve Iran. I wish you would post a blog.
Best,
Rosie
