The mystery is how could these people rule?

Some people say mullahs are extremely brilliant and that is how they hijacked the "revolution." But listening to this guy as an example, it doesn't make sense. Ayatollah Javadi Amoli is a very powerful and important figure in contemporary Iranian theocracy and politics.  He is so important, as Siavash Ardalan says in the clip, that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told him about the halo business at UN first, trying to get his positive reaction before moving on to tell others.  Though he is an extreme conservative, you should know that he didn't give Mahmoud Ahmadinejad his "blessing" about the halo business.  Anyhow, here are English and Farsi Wikipedia pages about him.
