Isn't it wonderful to come here and be introduced to  darvishjo singing  a persian song? And, to see Faramarz Aslani himself just walk up and comment on it? What would you have said even 20 years ago if someone had told you you'd be able to communicate this way one day.

What fantastic tools we have at our disposal.  Don't blame the times, Americans or Jahanshah if we can't unite and take our country back.

People actually discussing things in a civilized manner and not
insulting one another after a few posts.

Not only did the recorder of
the song (in this case Dervish Jo) took part in the discussion but the
original artist and author of the song, non other than the legend
himself (Faramarz Aslani) also honoured us by dropping a few lines.

First and foremost, what a pleasure to have you reply to our messages here!

Your Delmashghouliha was the only Iranian tape I had with me for years and I even used to play it on radio in the US. So many times I've gone driving around alone at night and sang (/shouted!) along with the entire tape in my car in the past twenty-something years... :-)

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't know you have written the lyrics to "Gar to ra ..." yourself. Unfortunately, even though the tape I had was the original CBS tape, it didn't mention the credits (I didn't have the box!) and this is why I've been confused about the origin of the songs.

Would you, by any chance, be interested in having an online conversation with me that I will be able to publish here on this site?

Dear Parham,
The song:
Gar tora bakht yara na chandan bekamast..
Is my own lyrics, and not Hafez's. He is far better than that!.
I also explained in a commentary to Darvish that Ahouye Vahshi, unlike almost all of Hafez's poetry, is written in "Mathnavi" form. That is why some scholars consider it not to be the work of the great man.
Although it is not included in some compilations of Hafez's work, it is present in many others.
I hope I have been helpful.

Thanks for doing such interesting rendition of my songs.
To clear a few matters:
Ageh Yeh...Was written by me and recorded for CBS in Iran in 1977.
The album was named: "Delmashghouliha", or "The Heart's Occupation".In that album I included a sample of my next work, also recorded for CBS," Beyade Hafez ", or " Hafez, A memorandum", which was released a year later.
Ahouye Vahshi," Wild Deer", is considered by some scholars not to be Hafez's. This argument arrises from the fact that almost all Hafez's work is written in Ghazal form. Ahou...Is however written in Mathnavi, or rhyming couplets, style.
Both these albums were made into CDs, in 1992, using the original CBS Cassettes!( many people remember tem as "BONE" cassettes.)
I hope I have shed some lights on the questions posted.

Thanks about the explanation. Guess I've forgotten about the difference between Ghazals and Ghassidehs after all these years.

Ala ey ahooyeh vahshi is not a ghazal but is a ghasisdeh, and it belongs to Hafiz.  My father had a hard time accepting it too, but is more receptive now. 

The problem is Iranians feel as if Hafiz was born reciting ghazals and did not go through an evolutionary learning and experimentation phase.  He has about 800 ghazals which are all perfect, which only means that he was very careful to destroy his early work and experimentation, with other forms, as all artists do.  This ghasideh and another attributed to him (I forget the title but I can look it up), apparently escaped his attempt to clean out his earlier work and make his record spotless with his favorite form, the Ghazal. 

I have an old cassette tape of "Be yaadeh hafiz" by Aslani and my favirite is sahar baa baad meegoftam hadiseh aarezoomandi.

darvishjo: It's good that you mention that, I should have done it in my last message myself. Actually, the ghazal is not in Hafez's (usual) style either, that's why I've heard experts on Hafez (like my father) say it can't be his. However, as it figured in my "Beyade Hafez" collection of songs, I've so far naturally assumed it was written by Hafez. I think we'll need Mr. Aslani himself to clarify this one for us!

More, there's another song on the same album (I forget the name) that starts with

"Gar to ra bakht yara na chandan bekam ast
Var to ra goosheye tiregiha magham ast
Ashk o ahat nabakhshad panahi ke donyaye mara
Eshgh mibayad in roozegaran khoda ra..."

that's also supposed to be by Hafez --I don't know if you have that one in your collection-- and I'd like to find out for sure whether it comes from the great poet or not.

It's a shame we never really had a proper publication of the songs where all credits were attributed on the inside leaflet.

Anyway, if you do find out, please let me know as well!

I didn't find that ghazal in my Hafez Divan, a big fat one edited by Shams al-Din Mohammad. That song is in Aslani's collection beyad-e hafez, so I guess it must be based on a ghazal that is missing from my divan.

Thanks for the info Parham. I didn't realize Hafez wrote the lyrics. That simplifies the problem tremendously. Everything Hafez ever wrote has been printed, arranged, indexed, translated and sorted at least 100 different ways. People might argue about what his words mean, but knowing what they are is not a big problem these days.

On another note

Funny how this video has been going around the Internet today. I don't know how many times I've received it via e-mail myself!

darvishjo: The lyrics to "Ala Ey Ahooye Vahshi" are pretty complicated too. They were written by Hafez. Good luck with that.

About 20 years ago I was doing a small part in a play in London for the Iranian new year.

Faramarz Aslani was with us and we were all stock outside because the caretaker had not turned up.

Faramarz burst into song and sang this very song and cheered everyone up. He is such a nice guy in person, I'm sure he would enjoy your version.

Thanks for the suggestion about the wild deer. I'm not good at catching animals like that, but I'll try it. That one is really hard to play because the recording has two guitars that are both doing complicated parts.

That one is the 1970's CBS recording. I know, because I bought it! They've just changed (/updated) the cover and changed the name of the album so that people know it's the one with "Age Ye Rooz".
Now if you listened to the samples on the web page, you're probably taking another recording for the original seventies one.

By the way, I wonder if you can also sing "Ala Ey Ahooye Vahshi" as good as you sing Age Ye Rooz! Keep'em coming, just in case. :-)
