BBC: A surprise visit by US President George Bush to Iraq has been overshadowed by an incident in which two shoes were thrown at him during a news conference. An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush "a dog" and threw his footwear, just missing the president. The soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture. In the middle of the news conference with Mr Maliki, a reporter stood up and shouted "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog," before hurtling his shoes at Mr Bush, narrowly missing him. "All I can report is a size 10," Mr Bush said according to the Associated Press news agency>>>

by Souri on Sun Dec 14, 2008 06:32 PM PST"When black kills black in Africa with no help from America, it was OK too; remember 2 million in Rwanda? "....
We didn't do anything, you are right, but why didn't America do anything ? If America fight for the establishment of democracy in Iraq, why they did nothing for Rwanda and they let people killing each other? why they never admit the word "genocide" would be used for that mass murdering in Rwanda, while all newspaper were talking about that ? Ah, don't tell me, let me guess, there's no pipeline in Rwanda!!

BTW, these ugly arabs[taazi] are only good for nothing,,, the guy couldn't even hit President Bush from a meter!!
-And what an amazing reflex by President Bush!
p.s. Rocks are very expensive in Iran because it's all being exported to palestine for 30 years,,, From now on the price of shoes will rise too...

by Behnam Khazar on Sun Dec 14, 2008 06:12 PM PSTAs someone who lost innocent friends and relatives to criminal regime in Tehran, I say even one innocent soul is too many. Why do you say that I make excuse for W; I agree that the war is unnecessary and wrong. I agree that innocent people are suffering and being killed. But I don't agree with one sided attack on American. Much more innocent Iraqi's died during Saddam. Mass graves in Iraq are not invention of American.. We even tend to give Tehran government a pass over massacare of political prisoners in summer of 1987. Some of us may even think that those buried at Khavaran deserve it.
When Syrian goverment is killing innocent Syrian, I don't hear much from you folks. When shiat and sunnis are killing each other in Pakistan, I don't hear any complaint. When Somali government kills non-moslem Somalis, it is OK since it is not done by American. When black kills black in Africa with no help from America, it was OK too; remember 2 million in Rwanda?
Even though America has made lots of serious mistakes, I can say that American have also done more than any other nation for the cause of peace and democracy since WWII. Go read history.
Asdola,
by sina B (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 06:06 PM PSTPerhaps Iraqis really miss "good old days" when they used to have at least a half-life back then; when their homes were not bombed or invaded by occupying soldiers every night; and their daughters were not raped and killed by foreigners in the name fighting terrorists. I'm sick and tired of the argument that life under Saddam was not any better, so this war is justified.

by IRANdokht on Sun Dec 14, 2008 05:42 PM PSTWhat is the accepted number of people killed before you condemn the actions of GWB in Iraq? is 500,000 dead people not enough? 300,000? and for what? Do you think it was even less than thenumbers reported by Fox news?
Everyone was supporting the attack on Afghanistan and kicking out Talibans, but GWB left Afghans in the middle of the war and moved on to attack Iraq for nothing!
How many dead Iraqis does it take before you accept that the war was unnecessary and criminal?
Stop making excuses, a 5 yr war based on lies was and is wrong no matter how you try to justify it.

I miss the good old days...
by Asdola (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 05:37 PM PST... before this imported democracy, coming out of an American gunbarrel came, and when you were able to throw your shoes at Saddam and his guests !
Saddam is dead, but God willing, once the Americans leave, the glory days will return...
As much as I despise Bush
by Shahzad (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 05:36 PM PSTAs much as I despise Bush and his policies, I feel bad for America to see that its once legendary prestige has diminished so much. Imagine the image of the president of the mighty USA dodging a shoe thrown at him at a press conference! Shame on him and those who still defend him.
I have no doubt that so
by Behnam Khazar on Sun Dec 14, 2008 05:34 PM PSTI have no doubt that so many innocent Iraqi's were killed in the last 5 years. However, whoever says "one million" cannot count. We are very good at exageration.
I remember very well that the first year that I went to college, in all opposition literatures including Iranian Student Confedracion they were saying that shah has 3,000 political prisoners; in my second year the number was inreased to 40,000 and the third year it was 100,000.
A year later when SAVAK prisoners were let go during revolution we all found out the real number was very close to 3,000. Go figure!!
We are very good with exagerations and adding zeros to the real facts.
I propose creating a SHOE FUND

by Sameen (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 05:16 PM PST"one American bullet is fired or one American bomb is dropped!!"??? Buddy, you need to go and count. Even if one bullet is fired to kill one Iraqi, that's too much! What the hell Americans are doing in a country that did no harm to Americans? And please don't repeat the Bush's BS argument that we got rid of a dictator.
To Behnam Khazar
by Niki on Sun Dec 14, 2008 05:08 PM PSTYour accusations against JJ are completely empty, and anyone who has read this site more than once would know that he has spoken out against injustice no matter who was committing it.
And how do you know what this young journalist did or did not do during Saddam's time? Do you know how many people lost their lives or livelihood becuase they challenged Saddam? It seems you need to be reminded that the US was supporting Saddam for most of the years he was committing those atrocities.
If you want to keep your head in the sand about the million + who lost their lives in Iraq as a result of Bush's criminal war, that is your call, but don't expect the rest of us to go along.
A Shoe Throwing Hero!
by Niki on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:54 PM PSTThe coward "anonymous not" who hopes for the journalist, montazer al-zeidy, to be taken to Abu Ghraib may be getting his wish. they beat the shit of the guy and have detained him, doing god knows what.
But whatever they do, this guy will be a hero to Iraqis and everyone else in the region and the world who will not bow down to foreigners who destroy their country and kill their compatriots.
This is the culture of that
by Behnam Khazar on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:44 PM PSTThis is the culture of that part of the world; They respect brute force and power. They know that they can get away with throwing shoes at W and nothing happens to them, so they do it. For 30 years, the MF journalist was silence during Saddam rein of terror or even used to kiss his behind.
And please JJ, don't repeat the nonsense from moveon.org....1,000,000 dead? What are you talking about? First go and count the people who were unjustly tourtured and killed since the revolution, add to that all innocent youngsters who died form both sides in 8 years of war between your two great heros, Khomeini and Saddam, may both of them rot in hell.
JJ and like of him don't mind if the whole world killing each other; but god forbid if one American bullet is fired or one American bomb is dropped!! That is going to be hard on their concious.
He sure knows how to duck ! ;0)
by Darius Kadivar on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:41 PM PSTGee that was some reflex.
That said I don't approve such a behavior however understandable.
His Presidency was a "Reign of Error" Like Robin Williams best described it. I would personally throw my Shoe at Dick Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld and I hope that a fair investigation can even bring these guys to trial in front of a Court of Justice for Crimes against Humanity. Cheney and Rumsfeld's responsibility needs to be scrutinized and it is important to do that also for the sake of Democracy and Human Justice.
I think Bush was not fit for the Job and Like Oliver Stone described in W. he is a total disaster and his legacy will hardly be a reference in Human History nor a role model of a Presidency.
But I think we need to also put things in real perspective which will I am afraid take Time. As Much as the War in Iraq was an Error that in Afghanistan I believe was and is more justified and many Afghans believe that an American and UN presence in Afghanistan can only help on the long term even if it should not be considered as the only solution.
I am afraid that is more difficult for the Iraqi's who are suffering on a daily basis and seeing their country fallen apart to Forgive Bush and his lousy Administration.
But as you know it is much more difficult to Win Peace than Win a War ...
Obama's Task will be a difficult and probably a fatal one in the years to come to offer a constructive solution to the mess in the Middle East and restore America's credibility in the region and on an international scale.
Tough Times ahead ...

by tabin (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:32 PM PSTI feel sorry for you that you still believe the gun policy of the idiot W has worked in Iraq. If that's the case and you think democracy is working there, then what's the complaint about this freedom of press incident? Bush tastes the medicine that he has prescribed.

by Dehati (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:32 PM PSTWhere did you get your PhD from Sir? you can not count? Did this man kill less innocent people than Nader Shah? According to UN 600,000 people have died in Iraq till last year. give me a break with your silly comment! A shoe throwing was simply too kind. I am so sad that it missed his face, But I trust in God's Wisdom, Worse than a shoe on his face will happen to Bush, either in this life or next. Bush should be happy that he didn't attack iran, because iranians don't throw shoes, they can do better than that...
serves him right!
by IRANdokht on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:31 PM PSTAlthough I understand the frustration this reporter speaks of, I am glad the shoes didn't hit or hurt him, the consequences would have been grave. I hope he does not go through tough times for speaking up against 5 years of killing, bombing, shooting, raping and destruction of their country.
on a different note

Is there a way to limit the number of anonymous comments made by the same person under different handles? like maybe even the anonymous ID would stick to the IP address for a while so it doesn't look like a number of people are saying the same nonsense...

Responsibility
by Jahanshah Javid on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:22 PM PSTAnonymousnot, you're right. I should take responsibility. I was a supporter of the revolution and worked for the Islamic Republic News Agency. Hurl your shoes at me. Better yet, crack your laptop on my head.
And what should Bush take responsibility for? Invading a country over weapons of mass destruction that he and his administration knew did not exist, leaving a million or so Iraqis dead, leaving destroying the country's infrastructure (except the capacity to export oil!), leaving the country in the hands of Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish warlords, spending upwards of a trillion dollars on the war that could cost twice or three times that in a few years...
That's democracy. Give Bush a medal.
And please ask your friends in Washington to do the same in Iran.
JJ..? Please answer the question!
by Anonymous^2 (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 04:16 PM PSTAren't you ashamed of helping the Islamic regime to come to power?

Moral of story: It is easy to be couragous when one knows the consequences of his action is not death! I wonder where this man and his shoes were when Saddam was ruling him!

by AnonymousNot anymore (not verified) on Sun Dec 14, 2008 03:17 PM PSTArent you tired of this Jahanshah? the likes of you helped the Islamic Regime come to power. And now live comfortably in San Francisco and just spread criticize everything that happens by anyone else. What have you done? to help the Iraqis or Iranians?
Is it still trendy to bash the USA? after all as Iranians we are huge supporters of Saddam right?
Yet you still dont give up?! so you preferred if Saddam was in power?
Now that the war has happened, its all up to the Iraqi people to take responsibility and use this opportunity to rebuilt Iraq.
Democracy doesn't come cheap. People in this region (including Iran) must pay a price so that value it and work hard to keep it.
