Oh, Wind, kindly tell that tender gazelle;
.....you've exiled us--crazed--to wilderness.
The sugar merchant--may he live long--
.....would he not remember that sugar-craving
parrot?
Did the vanity of your beauty forbid--oh, rose--
.....to ask after the love-sick nightingale?
The wise will hunt with humor and kindness;
.....traps and harnesses will not hold
the gifted bird.
I know not why there is no sign of recognition
.....from that tall, black-eyed beauty's
face.
When you sit drinking with the beloved,
.....remember those who're absent: toasted
them once!
Nothing more need be said about your faults:
.....faith and charity are absent from
a beautiful face.
No wonder in heaven--Hafez says--
The song of Venus brings dance to the feet of The Messiah.
