My two-cent's worth

"Perfect beauty in an imperfect world"is the best description of poetry, especially Persian poetry. Resorting to some sort of free expression-poetry or prose is not only Iranian,it is a universal approach to express ourselves with the least adverse consequences. What is Iranian is poetry with uniquely craftee, beautiful rhyme that is becoming increasingly less possible in our technological world. That is why "new poetry or shereh nov. was invented in Iran. More use was made of rhyme even in the Western world in the past though never as much as in Iran. The difference between rhyme and no rhyme is like the difference between handmade Persian carpet and the machine-made ones. To aspire for free expression is not only Iranian. Do not ever forget that fiction writers in the Western world are no different from the Iranian poets. Such writers resort to fiction to be immune from negative consequences by the rulers and appealing to the readers who prefer an indirect approach to read about events in our imperfect world.
Do not also forget that the use of rhyme and music in Persian poetry is fading away with the onset of "modern technological world" when we have increasingly less time to read all thre is to be read.
The truth is that though Persian poetry is time-consuming for poet, it is the best time-saving device for increasing number of people. Alas, it is disappearing when we need it the most.

Stripping ourselves

Thank you, dear Nilofar, for this eloquent poem. Being naked and true, soul and personna, is the most challeneging endeavour for us, the Iranians. The fear of being ourselves, hiding our true selves behind masks and lies and other kinds of coverings, has kept us in the Dark Ages! If only there could be a national awakening!

Twisting the truth

Thanks Troneg, I think dictatorships, closed culture, and censorship has a lot to with it. Talking straight, writing the truth as it is, will get people in a lot of trouble. Better stick to poetry, be vague, twist your words... twist the truth :o)

I must insist that I don't want to take away anything from Nilofar's poetry or anyone else's. Good poetry is always cherished, deservedly.

Poetry is in our blood

Poetry is in our blood. Look at our literature, Ferdoosi, Hafez, Khayam, even Saadi explained his trips in poetry.

Why ? many reasons are possible :

- May be the simplest is that Iranians love poem so poets are more encouraged than writers.

- Of course under dictatorship which is an Iranian speciality, you can say more things with poetry.

- A Poem is an enigmatic miror who shows you your hidden face, so each one could find something personal and Iranians love be unique.

- A Poem is short and at the same time say a lot of history , Iranian are "lazy" readers ;-)

For ending something new, As poem is short it is easier ti read it thru Internet where you should read a lot of things in a short time.

You can take away the reason you prefer. :-)

Naked

Another wonderful work of art. I love this poem: Perfect beauty in an imperfect world.

But it raises an interesting topic, whether poetry is "naked" at all, compared to prose.

I have this impression that the reason why so many Iranians resort to poetry for expression is that they have a hard time expressing themselves in clear, or "naked", sentences. Plain speaking and writing is not really considered an art.

We have many great poets. But great authors? Not a whole lot. Why is that?

Just a thought.
