Critical shift

The protests in Iran over the past few weeks have shown that the opposition in Iran is not going away. In fact, while the regime is shrinking, the opposition is growing and gaining momentum. For the West, this has significant implications. With nuclear diplomacy at a deadlock following internal Iranian divisions, the mass demonstrations underline the folly of a singular focus on nuclear matters in the midst of Iran’s historic upheavals. Almost seven months after the elections, the Green Movement continues to deprive Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of any sense of normalcy>>>

This Revolution Might Take a While

Since the disputed election there’s been a lot written about parallels between the unrest we see in Iran today and what happened in the late 1970s. The combination of massive street protests, and a government that resorts to violence to put down these protests, have led many to conclude that we are witnessing a reprise of that era. And perhaps we are, in some fashion. Certainly the current regime has suffered a grievous loss of legitimacy, and that does not bode well for its long-term survival. But I’d be surprised if this revolution proceeds with the same speed as the last>>>

آفتاب نیمروز به داغی‌ میتابید ولی‌ زمین هنوز از بارانهای شبانه نم داشت. دخترک نجوا کنان به دنبال نوای دور نیلبک از جویی به جویی میجهید. پسرک چوپان بود و از این دنیا جز آن نی و عشق این دختر چیزی نداشت. آنچه که معشوق در نی میدمید دخترک همان زیر لب میخواند. مگر این دنیا زیر و رو میشد اگر پسر سر و سامانی داشت و یا زمانه طوری بود که کدخدا دخترش را به همسری چوپانی میداد. به پسرک که رسید دختر مات معشوق پایش به سنگی‌ گرفت و به زمین گل‌آلود افتاد. پسرک دوان دوان خودرا به او رسانید تا دستش را بگیرد و یاریش کند ولی‌ دید که دختر بر زمین نشسته و بر جوی آبی‌ خیره شده>>>

پرده های بخار گرفته از آتش شومینه را به رخت آویز خیالم می آویزم تا از میان گرمای تن تو راهی به بیرون پیدا کنم.

صندلی را از پشت میز کنار تختم بر می دارم تا رویش بایستم.

The State of the Opposition is Strong

In Wednesday’s New York Times, the Leveretts—Flynt and his wife Hillary Mann—were at it again. As the title of the piece suggests, they take on the mantle of prophets and predict: “Another Iranian Revolution? Not Likely.” They claim that they know that “much of Iranian society was upset by protesters using a sacred day to make a political statement.” They seem to have forgotten that the 1979 revolution was made precisely by using sacred days for political ends. They claim to know that the opposition in Iran “do[es] not represent anything close to a majority.” >>>

Mission impossible

In the past thirty years, the power structure of the Islamic Republic of Iran has moved from populism to clientelism, and now to militarism. The triangle of power that includes Supreme Leader Khamenei, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is much more fragile as opposed to the previous power structures. Why? During the first decade’s populism, power rested in the hands of the unrivaled and charismatic leader Ayatollah Khomeini. Very few people, if any, could act against his will and his policies>>>

نقد خام دینخوئی

برخی منتقدین دین تصور میکنند دینداری یا باصطلاح یکی از آنها "دینخوئی" مستلزم تقلید و تکرار و تعطیل عقل است. علت چنین تصور باطلی جهل مرکب اینگونه منتقدان دین است که تئولوژی و تاریخ عقاید دینی را در خور مطالعه جدی نمیدانند و نقد بیرونی و ابزار عقل روشنگرانه قرن هجدهم با چاشنی کمی لودگی را برای تخطئه دین کافی میشمرند. نمونه این روش مشی کمدین موفق و مشهور به دین ستیزی آمریکائی "بیل مار" است که فیلمی بنام "ریلی جیلیس" دراثبات ابلهانه بودن دین و ساده لوحی دینداران ساخته است. در سراسر این فیلم اثری از یک محقق دین نیست>>>

اندیشه یک تصویر

و همه به دنبال یک تصویر بودیم. تصویری که بجای مانده از ناشناسی آشنا بود. شاید بیش از یک نفر آن را کشیده بود. شاید هر کس تنها نقطه ای از رنگ دلخواهش را بر آن نقش کرده بود. هر چه بود تک تک آنها نیز تصویر را در خیال خود نقش کرده بودند. گذاشتن نقطه ای اتفاقی نمی تواند پدید آور تصویری به زیبایی روح آزاد پرنده باشد. پرنده ای که یکی میگفت پروازش را به خاطر بسپار. پرنده ای که تجلی اش در پروازش بود و پروازی که فقط حس می شد. پرواز ارتباط پرنده و آسمان است ، و تصویر پرواز را در خود داشت>>>

The Center of the Universe

"Iran cannot yet decide whether it is more Iranian or Moslem. Future Iranians need to cope with this dichotomy. Perhaps the reemergence of some degree of the nationalist, pre-Islamic legacy will moderate Iran's more zealous Shi'ite side." Polish War Cemetery at Anzali

The grand, wrought iron gates of the Polish wartime cemetery have not been opened for decades and are permanently padlocked. Entrance can be gained using a smaller, more prosaic, gate at the western end of the compound. As with the other Polish war cemeteries in Iran, this site is cared for by the local Armenian community, a service for which it deserves a deep debt of gratitude. Arrived with a bouquet of red and white flowers in my arms, I am welcomed at the door by the caretaker, Mr. Reza Moghadam, a slim, gentle, self-effacing man who leads me leisurely through what looks like a secret garden rather than a graveyard>>>

جنگ جنگ تا پیروزی – فصل دو

"انسان گرگ انسان است." هر کی‌ گفته راست گفته، چون هشت سال جنگ جنون آمیز رو حتی گرگهای وحشی هم نمیتوانستند تحمل کنند، اما ما ایرونی‌‌ها و عراقی‌‌ها با جشن و پایکوبی پیش بردیم. در نیمه‌های جنگ، عملیات‌های والفجر نقطه اوج اون همایش دیوانه وار بود. محسن رضائی در یک مصاحبه گفت "برادران سپاه عملیات‌ها میکنند"، و صدا و سیمای جمهوری اسلامی اون عبارت رو به مرتبه اعلا رسوند. اما "والفجر" ساخته هاشمی‌ رفسنجانی‌ بود که تو نماز جمعه اعلام کرد که، آخرین حمله نهایی‌ ایران و منجر به سقوط صدام خواهد بود.>>>

شعار های گوناگونی بروی تابلوها و پارچه های رنگارنگ نوشته شده بود. مرگ بر آرژانتین، مرگ بر آمریکا، مرگ بر اسرائیل، مرگ بر انگلیس، مرگ بر منافق، مرگ بر ضد انقلاب، زنده باد انقلاب، زنده باد رهبر و غیره. حدود پنجاه دانشجو که الهه نیز در میان آنان بود این اعلامیه ها را در دست گرفته و جلوی ساختمان ال ایتالیا در برابر سفارت آرژانتین تجمع کرده بودند. چند تن از دانشجویان در حال آتش زدن پرچمهای آمریکا و آرژانتین بودند و چند تن دیگر نیز با صدای بلند شعار می دادند. الهه اصلا حال و حوصله آن برنامه را نداشت و اگر قبلا وعده همراهی به دوستانش نداده بود هرگز حاضر نمی شد در تجمع امروز شرکت کند>>>

Letter from a Tehran Jail

In the New York Times, Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett–both of whom I deeply respect–argued that the protesters in Iran make up a small, demographically isolated minority of Iranian society, and their activities therefore have very little chance of enacting real, substantive change in Iran’s political system. The Leveretts, in downplaying and even denigrating the activities of Iran’s dissidents, I fear that they will have justified the accusations that are sure to be flung their way – accusations of acting as apologists for the government, of disparaging a courageous and non-violent protest movement, and even of siding with Iran’s violent regime>>>
