Confessions of a Secret Agent
by Rosie T.
22-Dec-2007

When I first began "blogging" here (or more accurately, "threading") about two months ago, I had to defend my right to speak, because I was not an Iranian. It was hard, and sometimes painful, to hold my ground. But I knew I had finally arrived when I began to be accused of being a secret agent of various governments and organizations. I was “in”, I was accepted, I was one of the family. I met this victory with an odd mixture of satisfaction, frustration, and occasional despair.

Recently these accusations have been popping up left and right, and I mean literally left and right, because I am now apparently both a Hezbolaahi and a Zionist agent. I reply to these claims patiently, but still they multiply like mushrooms after a rainstorm. So today I posted a lengthy reply to one of these posts—lengthy even by my standards--intending to convert it into a blog. And thinking, well, from now on I’ll just refer my accusers to that blog. But then I thought, why bother? After all, the reply I wrote today to accusations leveled at me under the December 20 Iranian of the Day entry entitled “Brilliant Physicist.,” is really good enough. I can just refer them to that. And anyway anyone can track all my posts on my blogspace. So I decided to translate a poem instead.

It is a Chilean poem I've long known as a song, and heard again yesterday in a cafe near my home in the East Village. It was written by progressive activist Violeta Parra in 1965. It is called “Gracias a la vida.” It is very well-known.

The nation of Chile has known major CIA interventions, dictatorships, tortures, gross exploitation of its natural resources, economic disaster, and depredations upon its indigenous peoples. But it has also known great strides in democracy and autonomy, and it has given us this song.

I confess. I am a secret agent. There are two secrets whose sanctity I always honor: the mystery of the unfolding of the human heart and that of the ultimate fate of the soul. And I divulge the name of my agency: My agency is myself, my autonomy, and truth as best I can understand it.

And I understand the sovereign agency of nations to be based on this same individual agency. An agency whose coming has long been announced in the timeless works of the two great Eniightenments, the secular and the spiritual ones. And yet whose fruition remains a dream, as long as these Enlightenments remain severed from each other.

But their union is whispered in every human breath, and also by the wind.

Forthwith, Violeta Parra.

Gracias a la vida
(Thank You, Life)

Thank you life for giving me so much.
It has given me two stars which, whenever I open them,
distinguish perfectly between black and white,
and in the high sky its starry depths
and among the crowds the man I love.

Thank you life for giving me so much.
It has given me my hearing, which, in all its breadth,
records day and night crickets and canaries;
hammers, turbines, dogs' barks, rainstorms,
and the gentle voice of my beloved.

Thank you life for giving me so much
It has given me sound and taught me my "abc's",
along with it the words which t I think and proclaim:
mother, friend, brother and light illuminating
the route of the soul of the one I now love.

Thank you life for giving me so much,
it has given me the progress of my tired feet;
with them I walked through cities and puddles,
beaches and deserts, mountains and plains,
and your house, your street and your patio too.

Thank you life for giving me so much.
It has given me my heart which shakes its very frame
when I look at the fruit of the human mind;
when I look at good so far removed from evil,
when I look into the depths of your clear eyes.

Thank you life for giving me so much,
It has given me laughter and it has given me weeping.
Thus I distinguish joy from affliction,
the two materials which shape my song,
and the song of all of you which is the same song,
and the song of everyone, which is my very own song
.

Thank you life for giving me so much.

Sasha: Estos hombres son tremendos. Cuando podran comunicar sus sentimientos. WRONG: These men are tremendous. When they can communicate their feelings. RIGHT: These men are unbelievable. When will they be able to communicate their feelings. (with punctuation mark missing, that is the cause for the confusion...or at least I THINK it is the cause for what I THINK is the confusion, the missing question mark DOES make it ambiguous.  Sasha..dot your "t's" and cross your "i's", will you, my little Texmex Christmas reindeer?)

Paranoia has sure worked for the jew-americans

by Shalomster (not verified) on

they (including you) are as insecure as anyone else in the world, accusing everyone of being anti this and anti that. Paranoia adds color to the victimization picture and could sway some people to your side. If paranoia has helped AIPAC amd the rest of 'them' convince the US to surround Iran, then I'd say its the route that others should take. you were sh*t on by the left and the right because you have been inconsistent in your views. Maybe its you that just loves to play the game.

Take your democracy crap and shove it up your a**. The US doesn't give a damn if there is a democracy in Iran or not, nor does israel. They just want control. Why do you think Operation Ajax was executed over 50 years ago on a DEMOCRATIC govt? To intervene in other people's businesses just for your own good is annoying, stupid and MORALLY wrong. So Rosie rose, take all your BS whether its from your jew boys or your muslim whores or your beener chileans, and shove it up your cottage cheese a**. You are a phony big whore. You clearly understand that the conflict out there is not about democracy and freedom. They don't give a damn how we live out here. And they're saying its not our business to tell them how to live out there. Take your neocon crap and go back to your kosher long island. I'm sure Manhattan, now slowly being re-filled by families of the good ol New Yorkers that left 40 yrs ago given the influx of your kind, ain't gonna roll out the red carpet for your kind as it has been for too long. God bless Mel Gibson and his family! Yeah, I ain't kosher, and to that, I say God Bless!

Are YOU also "Lost Identity"?  I thought the Ali Mahin Torabi posts were EXACTLY the right place to talk about teen rage and I wanted to answer those posts but they required some thought and then  then , there were so many blogs and articles and.I had to write so much, and I was also EDITING for three different people regarding Ali...and then I kept looking for the "Lost Identity" ones but I couldn't find them..was that you?
I WANT to talk about this...

And respond to your other points you made here below.

Hello Rosie, As for :"Truly

by ManNaManam (not verified) on

Hello Rosie,
As for :"Truly I expected this from a low life poster than you". I do not beat around the bushes, and I really meant I consider you as a seasoned linquist with ample knowledge in literature. So, touching upon a subject so carelessly was a blow to your reputation. Needless to say that I'm not at your caliber at all in choosing words, but the essence of the message is what I care for. I would like to brush aside all the cosmetics and get to the heart of the matter. One can package a poison pin in a very pleasing form, but it is still a poison pil!

As for other discussions, I truly appreciated discussions on Bahai and Mahin Torabi. Unfortunately, I think I was misunderstood on the subject of Mahin Torabi. I agree that thread perhaps was not the right place to talk about Teen rage, violence and accountability due to its time sensitivity.

Happy Holidays........ and hope spirit of Christmas is as good as it used to be in NYC. I really miss NYC! People have fake smile in CA and one may only take it at it's face value!

Q

One of the most important qualities of any Tehrangelesi:

by Q on

failure to read. A Tehrangelesi is so damn sure what someone says, is or believes (or who someone is "defending") that he/she feels entitled to ignore reality and substitute a self-righteous fantasy that affirms their own unique status.

Exhibit 1:

I am not a Tehrangelesi, as I do not live in Los Angeles. Sorry to ruin your illusion in these days of holidays.

However, from my definition of Tehrangelesi posted in this thread on Sat Dec 22, 2007 05:58 PM PST

we see that the Term "Tehrangelesi" does not mean one has to live in LA or even North America. It's not about the city.

Proving once again that only something like redicule and satire forces Tehrangelesi's to actually read. Without understading the position, "responses" are meaningless. Since they are in practice actually a reaction to someone's imagined "position" rather than a reality.

Like I said, I'd rather not get into it. You can read along with everyone else later.

 happy holidays

Our Rosie

by J. Rashidian (not verified) on

Rosie, as you know I have no faith to define many things. I am one of those people who just admit that there are many things 'I don’t know', the jury is still out, it’s a possibility, and so forth. I suppose I have faith in the human potential to rise above their selfish ego centeredness and work towards true betterment of all mankind. Is that considered spiritual? I think you have also thought about this question. It could be, but it is not necessarily just a religious notion. Instated, there is another quality which stands above any religion; this is humanism, a tireless love for all even those who are not from the same country. It knows no geographical bounrdary, no race and no nationality. it is above all and is the whole aim of spiritual evolution of us. I admire this human quality which I find in your advanced personality! So, I call you Our Rosie!

No, I was not lucky enough to have Iranian in my family. I am very much a Hispanic, Mexican to be more precise.

It would have been nice to be fluent in Farsi, Spanish, English, and French. However, my French is extremely in need of practice and I am just learning Farsi.

Where I live there are no opportunities to learn an academic level of Farsi. So, instead I developed an academic level of English and Spanish.

In order to really learn Farsi, I would have to move to either  Austin, Texas,  Phoenix, Arizona or Northern California. I would prefer California. :o)  I hear the weather is lovely up there.

I am glad you liked the Tango clips. Yo Yo Ma has a CD with Tangos. :o)

I was very pleasantly surprised to see an Iranian who knows Spanish. Very interesting indeed. :o)

Gracias por la traducción en inglés. Muy amable de tu parte. :o)

Ah Manam!

by Rosie T. on

How good to see you again,  Before I answer your post, I need clarification.  It is only about ONE word but upon this ONE TINY LITTLE WORD hinges the fate of my entire reply.  So, when you said:

"Truly I expected this from a low life poster than you".

did you mean:

a) Truly I expected this from a lowER life poster than you  OR

b) Truly I expected this from a low life poster LIKE you   ?

That is my question.

As you know I'd promised to join you back again on the Bahai thread which you'd approached me on, after you'd slugged it out for a while with the Bahai themselves, which I recommended since they knew more about Bahaism than I and could discuss your numerous complaints about them better.  And indeed I popped up from time to time to say hi, I'm still reading, I'll be back, but then I got caught up--well you know me, stuck in my world of words--with the Ali Mahin Torabi campaign, approached by a website member who asked me to enlist those words to save his life during that last crucial week....and then when we won Ali's appeal,  the Bahai conversation had ended.  And you're not registered, so I couldn't contact you privately.

So good to see you again.  I felt bad about not having done as I'd promised you.  Because you see you're REAL to me...and so..I eagerly await your reply...on that ONE LITTLE WORD,,,,.

Re: Q

by jamshid on

Much to your dismay, and much power to my claims that you see people as "you want to see them" instead of "who they really are", I am not a Tehrangelesi, as I do not live in Los Angeles. Sorry to ruin your illusion in these days of holidays.

Though, it'll be interesting to know what are the "common attributes" between me and Tehrangelesis.

I had visited LA many times and know many people from that area. Your definition of "tehrangelesis" is flawed. Most Iranians in there are hard working and decent people. I am sorry for your misfortune of aquainting or having to aquaint only with the "funny" Iranians (for lack of words) who are the minority.

You are also false in stating that the shah was anti islamic and anti semitic. Quite the contrary, he had nothing against Islam and nothing against Jews.

You say "They (tehrangelesis) do claim to hate the British and blame them for almost everything that has ever happened in the Universe..."

How similar to you Q... You hate the US and Israel and "blame them for almost everything that has ever happened in the universe." There is a word called hypocrisy... that you have labeled me with many times. Oh well... Since this is Rosie's blog, I won't go there.

You claim that "they (tehrangelesis) are self-entitled to bully others, belittle women and who think they know everything about everyone." Hmmm... Sounds more like the mullahs, the government of which you so fevereshly defend. Again, we are back at the word hypoc... Oh well... Never mind...

And as for your last paragraph saying that Iranians would rather have X and Y than have those (tehrangelesis) come to power... You are false again. However, it WOULD BE true, once you substitue "Iranians" with "Islamist and Leftist Iranians". Needless to say that the Islamists and leftists, even combined, constitute only a minority in Iran. Funny how a puny couple of extra words could make such difference between the falsehood or the truth of a statement.

jamshid

Re: Rosie T.

by jamshid on

Nicely put.

There will always be contradictions and battles between the secular and the religious. Perhaps the "unfolding heart" and the "fate of the human soul" that you wrote about are consequences of these contradictions and battles, bringing a balance to our hearts and souls.

I'd like to say that indeed you are "in" among us in this site. You have taken a lot of criticism, unfair insults, labelings and perhaps threats too, but you hanged in there and stayed around. Thanks for your interest in and concern for Iran and Iranians, and taking the time to express those interests and concerns. Same goes with Sasha. Please spread the word about the struggles of Iranians as they are many who sterotype us with false assumptions.

Happy Holidays!

No Mam, You're not a secret agent!

by ManNaManam (not verified) on

I can only judge your character through the words you post. I think you have created a surreal world around yourself escaping the reality. Unfortunately, this is the new form of alienation people in the progressive societies. A bright and clear symbol of this phenomena is the spirit of movie, "Matrix". More or less, we all do this but I beg to say that yours is severe. You have created a world with "words" being it's building blocks and internet privacy it's mortar. You are no better or worse than some Mullah with mass-production of "word" rubbish The only difference is just the style of IT. (I have yet to contain myself from laughing about you take on sigheh in one of your threads!!!! It shows how "uneducated?" or "irresponsible?" or "determined?" you are about what you preach. Truly I expected this from a low life poster than you).
There are people who live what they say and there are people who want others live what they preach.

I hope you take this as a critique rather than a humiliating post!

Something from Rumi:
.........
You closed your eyes, meaning it’s time to sleep
It is not sleep, that upon your enemies heap.

You know that a close watch we do not keep
Yet hurried are your eyes, drunken, deadly, deep.

You do me wrong, but that is your treat
Your mistakes, like God’s grace, I gladly greet.

Many heads are lost when those eyes meet
By that blade, that drop of water, you defeat.

Alas, my eyes are a sea of blood
Many worlds are destroyed by that flood

Sometimes bloodthirsty, some messenger of God
sometimes a cup-bearer, some wine, red as blood.

What is cup-bearer and wine, if not divine
God only knows, what for is this love of mine.

In the kitchen of heart we can wine and dine
The whole town can smell such aromatic sign.

Close your mouth like a diver in the sea
Only under water can fish remain free.

Rosie...

I think quite a few people are just teasing you here, so please do NOT take them seriously, and do NOT get emotionally offended. You owe nobody any explanation. You should write for those who like to hear from you as you wish. So what if some continue to think that you are this and that. We iranians are confused and paranoid at this point in history. We trust nobody since almost everybody that we have encountered -- internal or external, religious or secular, ... -- in the past century has stabbed iran in the back. To the point that we are incapable of reasoning. We just throw venom and emotion at everyone and everything without being able to rationalize. We still cannot rationalize or agree if either shah or IRI was good or bad for iran. We try so hard to not be deceived and not fall into any trap and that by itself leads us into an unseen and complex trap. We are just too proud, yet cannot justify our pride since we are helpless in a foreign land and are offended by belonging to a demonized third-word country in daily turmoil for the last 30 years. Paradox of pride and its lack of justification is a heavy load on us on a daily basis. Cleansing self from prejudice - religious, racial, ethnic, ideological, etc - needs immense courage that you do have, others may not have.
Sorry hamvatans, but that is true, even more for iranians outside iran than those inside iran who have somewhat accepted their own realities.
