The Nuclear Sphinx of Tehran
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the State of Iran
by Yossi Melman and Meir Javedanfar Book Description Inspired by hate and surrounded by fundamentalist leaders in a country that may soon possess nuclear weapons, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad poses the most serious threat to world peace, even while he shrewdly manipulates public opinion at home. Until now, Americans have known little about him. Since his election in June 2005, Ahmadinejad has accelerated his country's nuclear research; called for the elimination of Israel; and failed the Iranian people, who elected him on a since-neglected domestic platform. In this first book about him, we see the forces that are bringing the world to the brink of another war in the Middle East. Written by an Iranian-born insider and a world-renowned intelligence expert, it offers the first full portrait of this former mayor of Tehran whose rural roots and vituperative populism catapulted him from obscurity to national leadership.

EXCERPT
“MY DAD WAS an ironmonger,” said Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in Tehran Radio’s studio 4, during a preelection interview. “He worked very hard so I could go to the University of Science and Technology and study civil engineering. But in 1993 Father passed away due to an accident.”

A year later Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, helped lower his father’s coffin into the grave. Ahmad Ahmadinejad died in 2006 from heart complications, not in an accident in 1993 as his son had claimed in 2005. No one is quite sure why Ahmadinejad told such a palpable lie so publicly. Perhaps he thought he could shield his family from the public spotlight. Or perhaps he was trying to hide something.

He was not, however, trying to hide his father, at whose graveside he showed deep grief and full respect alongside his brothers and sisters. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had visited his father frequently during Ahmad’s illness and, in November 2005, canceled a planned visit to Tunisia because of his father’s ill health.

The funeral of Ahmad Ahmadinejad offers a glimpse into the mysterious life and beliefs of his son, the president of Iran, one of the most influential leaders in the international arena. From beginning to end, the ceremony was carried out in strict Islamic fashion. Everyone in the large crowd of mourners, including Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, wore black, the color of mourning in Shiite Islam. Members of the public and government officials filled Narmak mosque. They prayed and afterward beat their chests rhythmically to the sound of drums. This is similar to the rituals of Ashura, the Shiite tradition dating back to the death of Imam Hussein, the third Shiite imam.

Ahmad was a popular figure in his community and a deeply religious man. Legend has it that he prayed every day of his last thirty years in Narmak mosque. His family in his native Aradan province told visitors that he had refused to eat at the table of people who did not pay Zakat (Muslim alms). According to relatives, when he sold his house in Tehran for approximately $55,000, he donated half to charity.

After Ahmad’s grave was covered in flowers, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad thanked the mourners and offered them a story about his father. He told them how his father had been a devoted follower of the martyred Imam Hussein, contributing money to the Ashura ceremony each year—save one, when he was having financial difficulty and genuinely could not afford to help. He felt so guilty about this that he became exhausted and started having nightmares. Then one night he dreamed that someone came to him and said, “Don’t worry, Ashura has its own master. It will look after itself.” The next day he ran into a friend in the bazaar. Upon learning of his predicament, the friend immediately offered to lend him money. Ahmad’s dream had come true.

For seven days after his father’s death, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not smile once for the cameras. His lips cracked open only at the sight of a group of visitors whose profession had given him many happy memories: the Iranian national football team.

The year that elapsed between the announcement about the fictitious death of father and the real one, the emotional funeral, and the sudden change of mood in front of his heroes—perfectly exemplifies the enigmatic nature of the Nuclear Sphinx of Tehran.

All this time I'm doing this for FREE?

by Kaveh Nouraee on

For a disapora that is supposed to be the most educated, there sure are some illiterate people here.

I am neither defending the author, nor am I suggesting he is a fraud. I have said it before, as I have virtually no knowledge of him, I therefore have no opinion of his work.

While I am not defending the author, I am taking issue with those who cannot separate the content of the author's work from the fact that he lives in Israel or that he's Jewish. Ahmadinejad and his cronies are Moslem and live in Iran, but that has nothing to do with the fact that he is a worthless piece of slime, with every word he says being nothing more than eshaal. If he were any other religion or lived anywhere else, it would be the same result.

Do you understand now, or do you need for me to draw you a picture?

Typical Islamist reaction and the way to fight back...

by jamshid on

I have written before that when Islamists intellectually lose an argument, they revert to the following sequence of actions:

1. Phase one: They cleverely try to change the subject by labeling you. In the past, they used to say you are a "Savaki", today, they label you as a member of the 75M club, or perhaps they label you as an agent of Israel, the list goes on.

They themselves know that statistically the chances that you are an Israeli agent or Savaki or whatever is very remote. But the point is that against an amateur, they have successfully and cleverly managed to change the subject from the main arguement which they were losing to something entirely differerent.

The way to fight back is to stick to the main subject. Let them label you all they want, but you keep on sticking to the main subject and not let go.

Once they see that labeling does not work they move on to phase two.

2. Phase two: They now revert to fosh, they'll get as dirty as they can. They call names to your mother, to your sister and so on, trying to hit a nerve. If you keep you cool and still stick to the main subject which they have lost its argument, and they realize that phase two has failed as well, two things could happen:

a. if physically present (and only when outnumbering you), they will get violent.

b. if not physically present, they will just quit and move on.

What is so funny is that they all do this as though they were trained in the same school.

Kaveh, Who is Paying you?

by bache_telaviv (not verified) on

You are spending all this time defending someone that YOU DON'T KNOW, nore are YOU FAMILIAR WITH HIS WORK, and in all honesty, you also seem to imply that he may be a FRAUD. Why are you doing this? Who is paying your bills? I hope not the $75M Club!!!. Heard they are going out of business.

M,

If the guy is a fraud then the guy is a fraud. Perhaps YOU don't get it. But not one of this guy's detractors has been able to defend their position WITHOUT resorting to turning it into a Israeli or Jewish matter. THAT is the point, the only point and nothing but the point. His country of residence cannot is not a subject for discussion just because you want it to be since you don't like the place. Who died and made YOU king or queen? You are saying that if he lived in South Jersey where then it wouldn't mean a damn thing to you. That proves your opinion is not solely based upon the factual integrity of the author's work.

If this Meir is a pathological liar, then he is a pathological liar. Every other descriptive is simply piling on just for effect. I read and comprehend English much better than you think.

I don't think you get it. It is NOT author's RELIGION, or his country, although the latter could be a subject of discussion. It is that he is a FRAUD. Enough people on this forum have provided reasons. If you are unable to read and comprehend English, go back to kindergarten.

Kaveh Nouraee

My head is stuck on my shoulders

by Kaveh Nouraee on

It is YOUR head that must be lodged elsewhere.

You must be illiterate, but I never said I believe what this man has written or take his writing as fact. Pull your head out of your orifice of choice and re-read it.

My issue is with you (and people like you) making this an Israeli or Jewish thing. It's the same weak bullshit that some blacks use, by blaming whites for their problems, or some Mexicans who do the same thing. Funny thing is, the blacks who blame others are invariably uneducated and unemployed, and the Mexicans who do it are invariably here illegally. So what the hell is your damn story? Are you illegal, or unemployed?

Like I said, I don't know this guy, never met him, never even read any of his writing. This EXCERPT (which means a PORTION or a FRACTION) of the book is my first and only exposure to anything aout him. But if this guy was not Jewish, you wouldn't say half the crap you are saying now. You would call him names that had nothing to do with his religion or where he lives now.

So since you are obviously morally and culturally bankrupt and you lack the guts to use your real name, you are in no position to say whether or not you can be bothered to respond to me. Therefore, I'll tell you; unless you can refrain from making this a "Jewish" or "Israeli" thing, then sit the fuck down, and shut the fuck up. This is a forum for ADULTS, and you're clearly up LONG past your bedtime.

This book has to be a fraud and here is why:

by cool dude (not verified) on

I don't have a dog in this fight and I have not read the book but I would have to agree that this book is in all likelihood a fraud and a propaganda piece. Another commentator here who was saying something about marketing alluded to the proof.
.
Ahmadinejad really has nothing to do with the Iranian nuclear program. All the decisions are made by his boss Khamenei. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional and gives too much credit to Ahmadinejad.
.
That said, the guy's picture appears on the front cover and he is called Iran's nuclear sphyx. The authors are trying to use Ahmadinejad' poor image in the west to sell books, push a more sinister propaganda campaign and are suggesting that he is somehow connected to Iran's nuclear program which he is not.
.
Anybody with the most rudimentary knowledge of Iran's power structure would tell you this. This book is for meant for the gullible westerners who don't know any better and I they have seen is the picture of Ahmadinejad on their TV touring the nuclear facilities in Iran.
.
This book will have very few Iranian readers and even those are very much like the gullible westerners who buy the propaganda hook, line and sinker.

Kaveh Nouraee

And the personal bias you find is.......

by Kaveh Nouraee on

And the personal bias you find with Meir Javedanfar is where? In his religion? The fact that he lives in Israel? With that same logic, you would probably argue that every Iranian living in Los Angeles are Jewish and in the entertainment industry. I know many who are in fact, Jewish and know that there is a growing number who are in the entertainment industry, but that doesn't mean that they should all be stereotyped.

The fact is, this guy is a writer, whether you like his work or not. I think rap music is pure unadulterated garbage that has further bankrupted this already shallow culture by glorifying ghetto and prison life, but it still makes billions of dollars per year. The point is, who cares what any of us think? There are indeed people who hang on to his every word and those who don't. But calling him an agent of Israel is plain nonsense. If I had a penny for every single time an Iranian pulls Israel or Zionists or Jews out of their ass when arguing, I would be able to pay Bill Gates cash for Microsoft and have change left over.

Unless you are writing a mathematics textbook, where the answers were already established at the beginning of time, even non-fiction works have elements of the author's personal beliefs. I would be willing to bet that if this book was written by someone with the name of Mohammad Hossein Reza Whatever, there would be fewer complaints, even if it was what Meir wrote word for word.

Another thing. All of this credit some of you Jew-haters are giving Israel for controlling this and manipulating that is laughable. Not to mention the credit you give yourselves.

Do you honestly think Israel really cares what the IRI and a bunch of Arabs think of them?

re: then why make it an issue ....(Javedafar a Fraud)

by kay1 (not verified) on

The reason it is an issue is that an author, researcher, writer, etc. in the name of biography, presentation of facts, or any such title of historic value, in a non-fiction context, he/she is suppose to write his atciles with fact finding and complete research. He/she should present the truth with no personal bias. In the case of this Javadenfar book, he does otherwise; he uses his personal opinion, and day-dreaming world to present critical issues related to a great nation. Therefore, he loses CREDIBILITY. For the sake of other readers, he should be exposed. No one wants to hear from him/her again. He is no better than a bank robber, or an outright thief. I can understand the "money" pressure on these individuals in Israel. They are part of the so called "think tanks" and in order to get funded they have to offend someone who is labeled as enemy. Apparently truth and facts in those places take a back seat to ideaology. That is probably why Ghamar Khanoom refers to him as someone from the stone age.

Kay1.

Kaveh Nouraee

Then why make it an issue?

by Kaveh Nouraee on

If his book is full of lies, the the truth will be exposed in due course. I am perfectly capable of separating fact from fiction, and have managed to differentiate between the two without assistance.

Honestly, I couldn't care less how or when Ahmad Ahmdainejad died. I arrived at my conclusion about his son long before I ever heard of Meir Javedanfar, or this website. I base it solely upon my own observations and findings.

What I have also concluded is that Israel is as much a threat to Iran as George W. Bush is a genius. Iran's greatest enemy is its own corrupt criminal regime, the Arab parasites who look to Iran as  an endless ATM, and the people who support them.

jamshid

Re: bacheh tehrooni, ghomi, telavivi, etc.

by jamshid on

Thank you for recommending Javedanfar's books. I will definitely buy it and take a look at it. Anyone you label as a 75M club member or Israeli agent, etc, must have said something truthful to which you don't have any intellectual answers due to your own bankrupt ideology. Therefore, you revert to labeling, fosh and if possible violence.

Your labeling of Javedanfar is an assertion and confirmation that there must be some truth to his article.

Something that even by the US news media (which itself is full of ....) is incorrect.. This idiot Javadenafar must be living in stone age! On the contrary, one needs exhaustive proof specially if they are thinking and planning on going to war for it. Have we forgotten the lessons of Iraq. Also, what country do you know of that opens all of its door to the world to see.

I think Iran is stupid if she is not going for the bomb. After all, it shares the biggest border with the US which has openly threaten it with nuclear weapon, and Israel, Pakistan, Russia and India (all in the same region) have it and it has no way to defend itself specially when there are so many after their skin.

by Kaveh Nouraee on

What constitutes fraud? Are you suggesting that if the author prays Hebrew then he is a fraud but if he prayed in Arabic he's not?

Rather than making a statement based upon bias and bigotry, make it solely upon the facts. This narrow mentality is a perfect example of why Iran has 10,000 years of history and honestly not a damn thing to show for it.

Nice marketing job

by MarketingMan (not verified) on

Yet another book about a hot topic of the day, nicely timed of course. No doubt it is full of lies but will do the trick and bring in the bucks. I wonder how much of a kickback JJ is getting to promote it.
.
Ahmadinejad the nuclear sphinx title has a nice marketing ring to it for the gullible but that's where it ends. Ahmadinejad did not start Iran's nuclear program, has no say in it whatsoever at all and as such this title is completely inappropriate when it comes to substance. But hey why let the facts get in the way of making a quick buck.
.
It seem that the author knows which side of his toast is buttered. There certainly is no shortage of Iranians who would sell their soul to the devil for a few dollars let alone their country and pride and the author is a poster child of that.
