Yahoo Sports Blog: Tennis legend Andre Agassi reveals in his forthcoming autobiography "Open" that he used crystal meth during his playing career, Paul Bogaards, a spokesman for the book's publisher, confirmed to the New York Daily News on Tuesday. According to the Daily News, the eight-time Grand Slam champion admits using the illicit drug in 1997, the year he married Brooke Shields and went into a career slump that didn't end until 1999. After pulling out of that slump, Agassi went on to win five Grand Slams and became only the fifth player to complete the career Slam. He has been heavily involved in charity work since retirement, opening his own charter school and championing educational reform throughout the country. Releasing this admission a week ahead of the book's release is an obvious ploy to generate interest and sell copies, and it's working. Almost all autobiographies are self-serving odes to one's own pursuit of greatness. They're rarely interesting. Agassi's could be different >>>

by che khabar e on Wed Oct 28, 2009 12:54 PM PDTnot to belabor the point but has he ever DENIED being Iranian as several people are suggesting? Does he or his father consider themselves Armenian rather than Iranian? I'm just saying that I've never him deny anything... just to emphasize that he is American with an Armenian father. I simply think there is a difference. To make statements like he is "ashamed" of being Iranian does a huge disservice to him and anyone else who was born in the US and considers himself an American. He is of Iranian (or Armenian) heritage. But that leads to another question. Do you distinquish between the two?
..........
by yolanda on Wed Oct 28, 2009 12:26 PM PDTThank you, Little Tweet, for the info,
Apparently he tries to distance himself from Iranians....and he identifies with Armenians more.....maybe they can make him "Armenian of Day"...

FYI/Le Court des miracles by Mansour Bahrami (Ed. Broche)
by Darius Kadivar on Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:32 AM PDTWorth Reading too:
Le Court des miracles (Broché) by Mansour Bahrami with a Forward by Yannick Noah and Illie Nastase
In French Only ...
Excerpt:
I'll make sure I'll buy a copy of his book...

He is Iranian
by farokh2000 on Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:11 AM PDTAgassi's Father was a Boxer in Iran and on one of Iran's Olympic Teams.
He was born and raised here. That might be the reason he would consider himself non-Iranian. But he does have Iranian blood.
I am sure most Professional Athletes have used some kind of banned substance when they had injuries.
If he has only used it once, then he is better than most of them.
Who really cares what people do with their own bodies. It only messes with their system and that is their business.
He was fun to watch and has done much better than a ton of athletes we know.
He is doing a lot of Charity work now and that is great. Give him credit for that.
Leave him alone and stop criticizing him.
correct me if i'm wrong
by che khabar e on Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:08 AM PDTbut I don't think he has ever "denied" being Iranian. I believe his consistent explanation is that he is an American with Iranian heritage via his father. Not quite the same thing. :-)
I like Agassi
by Organic NUTritionist on Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:02 AM PDTI always enjoyed watching him (except if he was losing! ;) and I think he is a very talented tennis player. One of my favorites--forever, regardless.

by yolanda on Wed Oct 28, 2009 03:51 PM PDTHi! Mouse,
I used to work for a company with 3 Iranian colleagues.....one of the Iranian guys admired Agassi very much......I did not know that Agassi is ashamed of being Iranian. That is his big mistake for not being proud of his heritage!
I wanted to dedicate a song to him from "One Republic" called "Apologize" with the lyrics: "It is too late to apologize!"......
thanks,
U got it right Yolanda but in his case he was an ass from day 1!
