The Guardian: A 43-year-old Iranian woman is facing death by stoning unless an international campaign launched by her children forces the authorities to quash what her lawyer calls a bogus conviction. In a case that highlights the growing use of the death penalty in a country that has already executed more than 100 people this year, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted in May 2006 of conducting an "illicit relationship outside marriage." Sakineh already endured a sentence of 99 lashes, but her case was re-opened when a court in Tabriz suspected her of murdering her husband. She was acquitted, but the adultery charge was reviewed and a death penalty handed down on the basis of "judge's knowledge" – a loophole that allows for subjective judicial rulings where no conclusive evidence is present >>>

EU urges Iran to halt

by Raoul1955 on Tue Jul 06, 2010 02:35 PM PDTThank you for clarification that stoning is actually Judeo-Christian in nature and has no 'roots' in islam.
We do not see stoning in the Jewish State of Israel, or in our country which is based on Judeo-Christian values, however Iran is the islamic country that prescribes and carries out stoning. Based on your claim I suggest that you contact the Iranian government and inform them of the said issue. And would you let us know of the Iranian government’s response to your clarification that stoning is not islamic?
Cheers now

by yolanda on Tue Jul 06, 2010 01:47 PM PDTThe campaign is gaining momentum.....it has made #1 news on AOL.....the AOL contacted Mohammadi's lawyer in Iran......Mohammadi has not see her 2 kids in 4 years!
//www.aolnews.com/world/article/iranian-family-campaigns-to-save-mother-sakineh-mohammadi-ashtiani-from-stoning/19543401
here is the highlights of the news article:
**************************
Ahadi, an Iranian human rights activist who fled Iran for Germany in the 1980s, began helping Ashtiani's children, Sajad, 22, and Farideh, 17, spearhead a campaign to raise public awareness about their mother.
"I spoke to her son today, and he has a little bit of hope," Ahadi said. "Sometimes these death sentences are overturned because of public pressure."

by Cost-of-Progress on Tue Jul 06, 2010 11:12 AM PDTWe all know that islam is the most progressive religion among religions. In fact it is the Religon of Peace!
All you have to do to ensure the validity of this statement is to look at all Islamic nations and see how prosperous and progressive they are. As for it being peaceful, just ignore the fact that it condones the killing of non-muslims or its staunch followers sometimes fashion vests full of explosives and detonate it among their very own people........

Stoning and Islam
by alidowlatdad on Tue Jul 06, 2010 10:53 AM PDTIt goes without saying that stoning is a barbaric act that has no place in any civilized and humane society. Albeit, I would like to address some of the patronizing and holier-than- thou comments made by some of the readers who direct baseless, and insulting statements about Islam. Nowhere in the Quran stoning is mentioned or prescribed as a punishment for any crime.Stoning has a Judeo-Christian root. The Torah prescribes death by stoning for aseries of offences.
Was it not Jesus who condemned stoning by refusing to cast the first stone? (John 8:1-11). It is a barbaric custom ingrained in the culture and tribal traditions that has no place in the civilized world.
Sickening. Should be condemned....

Stone Age Mentality
by Doctor X on Tue Jul 06, 2010 08:53 AM PDTHas unfortunately overtaken every nerve in the body of those who justify stoning. This is nothing but a crime, equal or even worse in magnitude compared with the supposed original crime. Some people just want revenge, no matter what.
It is apparently OK to stone someone on the basis of some unconfirmed, legally unsubstantiated and proven charges, and on mere "suspicion", Just to avenge the crimes committed miles away by the army of total different country, and then the big conclusion would be that this site is run by zionists and pro-Israelis.
They better get their wheaties before its too late.
I have been trying to stay
by Bavafa on Tue Jul 06, 2010 07:39 AM PDTI have been trying to stay away and ignore extremist such as Fred or amgw, to name a few, for a few while now but can't go on and not say any thing here:
Amgw: "nokaretam, akhe gooze be shaghighe che kar dareh". If you are up for stoning which in my view is a truly a barbaric act, at least have the balls and openly say it so. No need to white wash and try to divert attention to totally unrelated subjects.
People like you and Fred have only one goal in mind, to spread hate.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Tue Jul 06, 2010 05:31 AM PDTThey are on a flotilla to Gaza. Have you noticed Sakineh is an Iranian so she does not matter to IRI "human rights" activists. If she were and Arab and Israel wanted to stone her they would be rioting now. But the life of an Iranian means nothing to IRI "human rights" jerks. That is Islam for you the div religion: Zahhak in action.

Stoning
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Tue Jul 06, 2010 04:22 AM PDTis a totally barbaric act ; a real statement on Islam. Amgw4: zip it, I am in constant touch with people in Iran. What this site is saying reflects what they think. They are angry and want AN and Khamenei gone. They are hoping against odds that somehow the mafia running Iran will go away. However Khamenei and AN the twin dictators are thirsty for blood. No amount of Iranian blood seems to satisfy you and your criminal gang.
Remember it won't be long before the IRI's turn facing wrath of people. Then they are all gonna run away to the Shaitan-e Bozorg and hide. I hope the West is not stupid enough to let them in. VPK
The Israeli propagandists on this site are ridiculous
by amgw4 on Tue Jul 06, 2010 04:13 AM PDTApparently killing hundreds of civilians by dropping a phosphorous bomb on them (that creates a flame that is not extinguished by bodily liquids and burns through your bones) as they take shelter in a UN compound is perfectly OK. But killing a woman who is suspected of murdering her husband is a horrifying outrage. Of course in another thread they will be advocating for massive bombardment of Iranian infrastructure, killing thousands, to teach those Islamic people a lesson.
Warning to naive Iranians who come here. This is not an Iranian website. It is effectively run by about 10-20 Israelis + a few MKOs and communists (lol @ communists in today's age) who plaster the site with anti-Iran articles. There are virtually no articles about Iranian society, life in Iran or Iranians on here that do not come from an AIPAC perspective.

i do not advocate bombing, i am against any bombing. of palestinians. of the iranian people or territory. even of people like you.
but i will not leave my well-intentioned, if naive, comment on for it to be cynically abused as a launchpad for deflecting attention away from the issue at hand.
amgw, try to find reasons why 'pure' iranians cannot protest against this barbaric killing of a fellow iranian woman.
i'm outta here.

In fact capital punishment must be stopped as it is state sanction murder.
