Spring Along the Wiese

Spring Along the Wiese

A spring poem for summer: I wrote this when we lived in Switzerland, in Basel, where the Wiese flows into the Rhine. I had lost it in some papers and then one day it ermerged, so I thought I would like to share it.

While I rest near the trees by the river,

Sunshine and shadow play amidst the leaves,

And then my glance perceives fleeting faces

in the ground mist clinging still in darker places.

I cannot move for fear to lose

the image now upon my eye…

The tender smile I never thought to see again…

But roiling clouds come charging by

and hide the sun.

Light dims, shadows fade, the face is gone.

Now I walk on

enveloped in my memories

And the green glowing bird song of spring.
