A garden from Galicia

A garden from Galicia
by Azadeh Azad

He said he loved me
I dreamed he was a garden
My scent dwelt in him.

I said I loved him
He burned joy into my flesh
Our bed of jasmine.

He sobbed for Spain
In between our embraces
Armfuls of sorrow.

“Come with me,” he said.
Narcissus thrived in my mind
I had other plans.

I left him a note
I’ll see you in Galicia
That ill-fated wish.

My sad solo dance
Into the saffron sunset
New moon on my chin.
