SHOULD WE IGNORE HISTORY?

M Jackson passed away and left us with this agonising thought of maybe his strange life and behaviour (including all those accusations) was due to his childhood. I am not going to mention anymore as it is not the point of my blog except that a man who since young age had most things he always wanted in his life, including psychologists, could not come to terms with his childhood bad experience or side effects, whatever you like to call it.

For some time I been asking myself this historical question which really goes back as far as maybe 16th or 17th century (you never know maybe this was a similar question your great great grandparents asked themselves) ;

Why were the British in middle-east, particularly in Iran?

Or what was their purpose?

Or what did they want?

I AM NOT really concerned about their present situation in this region. It is their past which is a question.

While thinking over please REMEMBER the following:

- They came from a tiny island in western Europe. They usually travelled by ship and took them a good few months to reach Iran.

- Those days even dictionaries did not exist let alone the word ‘terrorism’.

- There were no Islamic fanaticisms either.

- Akhonds did not exist like they do today and most importantly they were not political.

- Iranians were a loving nation with a great hospitality.

- Iran was not a rich country.

- Persian gulf was a back water not a rout for European commercial shipping and not everyone used it. The british did not need to protect this waterway.

- The british had Australia, India and Americas.

- Population in Iran was so low it was not even worth mentioning slavery.

- Petroleum did not exist.

So why did they go to Iran? What did they achieve? What did they want? Was it all worth it? Did they get what they wanted?

It is very easy to answer the last one. BUT NO in 16th/17th century, they did not know about oil.

Please share your thoughts.

HOWEVER no matter how we agree or disagree over each others’ views on this matter there is one issue a lot of us ignore. It is the other question;

What side effects their involvements in Iran had on our lives, past and present?

WELL WHY NOT it seems everyone else is effected by his/her past, why not our society?

To Fozolie

I meant to ask you this.

You said,"to stop the other colonial powers, namely the French and Russia (later Russia and Germany) from using Iran as a platform". Yes I also heard and read about this BUT did this reason justify their actions and involvement in Iran? (in particular with mullahs)

huh?

Where did I argue that the past should not be considered?

As for the reason WHY it is quite complex and I am not sure whether it can be covered here. It has a lot to do with our sociology and the history before the Brits involvement (as an example the shock of the Mongol invasion has a lot to do with instilling a phsychology fear or looking after no 1 in simple terms in the Iranian psyche).

Re quick judgement, it is very difficult to answer such a complex question. I meant no different than othe often used expression, aaz ma-st ke bar ma-st.

I think you missed at least part of my point.

I really do not know how long you been away from Iran and how long lived in west, but let me tell you this in majority of court cases you hear how an individual's past ( yes just ONE person ) is questioned. This is because some believe to perform justice, person's past must be considered.

How can you not consider a nations' past!!!!!!!!! I am very surprised that you missed that effect.

Greed, everyone has greed, beside the British were good at cheating too. Anyone would fall for it.

No we are not too quick to blame all the time not over every issue, and you been too quick to judge too.

Finally back to the blog itself, you said,"extremely distrustful of each other". Exactly my point ask yourself WHY?

is the main historical question a loaded question?

The answer is mainly India. They interefered in Iran because theY feared Iran's ambition for India itself (even though Iran no longer ruled India, the Iranian influence was great, the Brtis made sure English replaced Persian as the language of the court) but more importantly to stop the other colonial powers, namely the French and Russia (later Russia and Germany) from using Iran as a platform to get to India.

That history is well recorded and its connection to recent events has been well made by the likes of Peter Hopkirk in his very readable account of when and why: THE GREAT GAME covering no just Iran but central Asia.

With regards to the effects you are referring it I don't believe you can blame them. If they exploited us, it was through our own greed, incompetence and treachery (we Iranians are too quick to blame anything but ourselves individually and collectively).  It has made us collecvtively completely scizho as a nation and extremely distrustful of each other (but that is not entirely due to their legacy in Iran, there are many other factors that have contributed to that).
