Sometimes Materialism dialectic reminds me
of a young high school girl
sitting in a classroom in the best university
but it all ended when looming death
Gave her an education in the historical materialism
As executioner prayed to god
sometimes crow is just an ugly black bird
with horrible news from a far away land
Sometimes woman by the sea sings an stupid song
man in supermarket is too dumb to think of philosophy
while he shoves the samples in his mouth
Book of poems stays closed on my nightstand
At least no one has burned it,
But they never burned Hafez
Dead poets were safe
Executioner killed a poet in the morning
And at night He read Hafez
crow for me is still an ugly black bird
And executioner is still praying to god

There were really great books
by Anahid Hojjati on Fri May 13, 2011 06:33 AM PDTin Iran in late 1970s and early 1980s on Dialectical Materialism and Historical Materialism. There are always criticism of Leftist leaders in Iran but we have to accept that they had some of the best historians and writers and that made reading their books fun and educational. Also, Dialectical materialism made sense at the time to so many of us. I would be interested to read those books now and see what I think of them. Historical materialism books were fascinating since for the first time, in Iran, people got to read history not about the kings or Imams but the average person.

I do have to thank Mash Ghasem
by Anahid Hojjati on Thu May 12, 2011 04:19 PM PDTVildemose jan, thanks for your comment. By the way, we joke about MG having a good time as we work here. However, on a serious note, I am thankful to MG. If Mash Ghasem had not blogged about Dialectical Materialism poem by Hoagland and then he introduced me to Wallace Stevens' poem about woman singing near the sea, I would have never thought of this poem now. So my thanks to MG, hats off, enjoy your time in Bahama and keep up the good work. Sorry, was that also Mash Ghasem who suggested translating "thinking of that crow"? In any case, many thanks to MG and all fans of poetry and poets on IC.

It should be Dialectical Materialism
by Anahid Hojjati on Thu May 12, 2011 03:43 PM PDTwhen poem is not featured, I will change the first line to read Dialectical materialism. I might add more lines to this poem too.
Soosan Khanoom, you are correct about MG
by Anahid Hojjati on Thu May 12, 2011 03:17 PM PDTI almost wanted to rebel today and not work much on this Wallace Stevens' poem:
//iranian.com/main/blog/anahid-hojjati/invitation-group-translation-wallace-stevens-poem
However , I just turned in (in the form of a comment) translation of the third stanza, ready to be challenged by Ashena or any other friend.
Mash Ghasem indeed has put every one to work.
Anahid
by Soosan Khanoom on Thu May 12, 2011 03:07 PM PDTI realized but it turned out to be a nice poem of yours with some great points .....
I also have noticed that Mash Ghasem has put everyone on work here .... while he is vacationing in Bahama .....

Soosan Khanoom, it comes from translating too much these days
by Anahid Hojjati on Thu May 12, 2011 03:00 PM PDTAll this translation work that mostly Mash Ghasem has had us do and discussions on the site plus my memories of Iran resulted in writing this poem. Thanks Soosan jan for your comment.
